Heath Phillips on his way out?

It appears that the Sox have not put him on the 40-man roster. He will be a 6-year free agent and free to sign with anybody he wants in about a month. As far as I know, the Sox have at least one free space on the 40-man, so I guess they are willing to let Phillips walk for free. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

What's the deadline for being put on the 40 man?

As of Friday, the Sox only had 38 on their roster(per CHisox.com following Montero being outrighted)

Is there anyone else who needs protecting? Off the top of my head, I can't think of anyone really in danger of being claimed. Oneli Perez maybe.

I'm not positive on this

But as far as the 6-year minor league free agents go, I think the filing period is right after the World Series ends. There is probably a more specific pre-Winter Meetings deadline for Rule V eligible players.
