Bye Bye Torre

Breaking news reported by Sportscenter, according to The New York Daily News, Joe Torre will be fired tomorrow and replaced by Lou Pinella.

What do you guys make of this? Do you this is a true or just a false report?

If it is true, do you think Lou will have any more success than Joe has the past few years? Do you think this was a justifiable move or should George have stuck with Torre? Update [2006-10-10 13:37:1 by jeeves]: It seems that the reports were false after all, either that or Georgie Boy had second thoughts. It appears that Torre will remain with the Yanks.

I was too
I thought I misheard, but luckily the anchor repeated his sentence.

I think George is completely overreacting. A lot of people said that this is one of the best coaching jobs Torre had done, after keeping the team together through all their injuries.

I'm curious to see how this affects A-Rod's status. It seemed like he was on his way out, but Pinella likes A-Rod, so maybe he's staying put now.

If Joe is in fact getting fired, I feel sorry for him. It's not his fault the starting pitching was brutal. He had Wang and Mussina, that was it. Hopefully the report was wrong and he's stepping down of his own accord.

justifiable?
of course it's justifiable. you can justify just about anything. torre knows the expectations. he's been there 11 seasons. he's got a great won-loss record but they haven't won the big one since 2000 and don't have a pennant since 03.

i'm certainly not going to say they should have done much better - with that pitching it's a stretch - but two straight years of one and out isn't going to cut it in the bronx. i'm guessing this is just the first of many, many moves we'll see this off-season from the yanks. wholesale changes are in store and, when you do that, the manager is the first to go. this certainly isn't a surprise.

Especially when the Mets are still playing
6 years is a long time in NY (well, except if you are rebuilding the Twin Towers) and the Metropolitans have passed the Spanks in games-after-regular-season this year.  I don't think it is an overreaction at all.  $200MM payroll and some lousy Atlanta-like 9 consecutive division titles?  GM might be next to go...

Torre.....
I think has a chance to resurface in 2008 in STL.  Bye then I believe LaRussa will be done, and I think a year off for Torre makes sense.  He's a former Cardinal, and though he managed the Birds once before, it's a completely different climate with ownership that actually spends money on payroll.

are you guys really shocked?
I lived in NY during the late 70's-early 80's, witnessed Billy Martin getting fired about 47 times, as well as the tumultuous tenures of such luminaries as Dick Howser, Bob Lemon, Gene Michael, Clyde King & Bucky Dent...

You need to read the Bronx Zoo by Sparky Lyle and an underrated volume called Diary of a Yankee Hater by some nobody named Bob Marshall.

Anyway, given Steinbrenner's history, I am surprised Torre has lasted this long.  Only Casey Stengel lasted longer.
