Oneli Perez Update

An update on how RHP Oneli Perez is doing at the Dominican Winter League:

[Tigres del Licey: PDF, HTML]

In 18 appearances (22.0 IP), Perez (4-0, 1 save) has allowed 5 runs, 4 earned, on 7 hits while striking out 18 and walking 7. He has a 1.64 ERA.
(Here's today's MLB update. The stats section at Licey's site has the latest update).

Where do you see him this spring? Last year, he played 30 games at Class A Kannapolis (0.99 ERA, 0.85 WHIP), then 17 at Class A+ Winstom-Salem (0.72, 0.88), and finished with 7 at Class AA Birmingham (0.55, 0.73).

unless he dazzles at ST
start him at birmingham, with a view towards a promotion to charlotte after a couple months if he maintains his progression. i'm a big fan of slower is better than fast with prospects, especially pitchers. i expect to see him in our pen in '08.

does anyone
have a scouting report on him yet?

by beautox on Dec 21, 2006 2:52 PM CST reply actions

weak fastball
good slider.. From his crazy hit totals, I'd guess that he throws almost exclusively sliders.

He doesn't throw hard, and isn't a big body so he's discounted by many. Phil Rogers left him off the White Sox top 30 list for baseball America.

How you can come up with 30 guys more interesting than Perez is beyond me. I have trouble coming up with 10.

The Cube
lists him at 6'3" 163, which is taller than I thought he was, but obviously very slim. Maybe he has bulked up in the past year and added to his fastball. I don't know, he's really a mystery.

If he's that young
he will gain weight (think Pedro?).  Phil Rogers has shown, I believe, he is a doofus, at least as of late.

23 isn't really young
when you're talking about a pitchers peak velocity. You don't see many guys adding velocity after that age.

You do, however, see guys add power at the plate after age 23, even into their 30's.

from someone who's seen him
his breaking stuff is really, really nasty. some of the best the guy had seen for his level. now, as you move up in class, more guys are able to deal with sliders and such. but i'm told this guy has good enough stuff to be at least a decent major league reliever but he needs to work on his secondary pitches some. size, as cheat points out, has been a concern but this guy said he looked like he was 10 pounds or so bigger than what he was listed at on the cube (saw him in late summer).

by larry on Dec 21, 2006 3:13 PM CST up reply actions

FWIW
Chisox.com lists him at 6'2" 185#

But they also list Heath Phillips as 20 pounds lighter than Mark Buehrle. Anyone who's seen phillips knows that he looks more like David Wells than Mark Buehrle.

the scout i know
may have been referring to the chisox weight, then. i just assumed the cube one was the same as he was listed elsewhere. i recall the scout discussing how emphasis had been put on bulking him up and he was bigger than whatever he was listed at.

Charlotte
The DWL is felt to be AAA level, he has absolutley dominated at every level. Why send a guy like that back to B'ham? Put him at AAA, see if he remains dominant, or becomes average (can't see him being worse than average given his track record). If he remains dominant he's the first guy called up.

With Ozzie's track record I'd say there is a decent chance if he looks dominant in ST that he comes north with the team. I'd rather let him close for Charlotte first though.

Yes
I'd put him there just to see how well he keeps the ball in the park against top competition.

by 3E8 on Dec 21, 2006 4:03 PM CST up reply actions

with the way hes
dominating, does anyone think its possible he could move into a starting role if he develops his secondary pitches?

by beautox on Dec 21, 2006 3:59 PM CST reply actions

Hell no
Guys don't just "find" major league pitches this late in their careers.  Of which he would need two to have a chance of survival.  Perez's future lies in the bullpen.

by 3E8 on Dec 21, 2006 4:06 PM CST up reply actions

i'm pretty sure
the reason he was put in the relief role was because he didn't have the secondary pitches to be a starter. from what i've heard, it's very unlikely at this stage that he would develop his secondary pitches enough to be a starter. it's still not clear that he'll develop them enough to be a major league reliever.

one of my primary reasons for starting him at b-ham is because i think the staff there will better serve him improving/adding pitches than at charlotte. obviously the staffs could change - and maybe perez has improved his secondary stuff enough already (we'll know in ST). otherwise, starting out as a baron is probably better for his development.

random nfl thought
now that Art Shell is going to be fired, the packers now have the most worthless person in the nfl.

bubba franks, and in 05 GB gave him a 7 year deal.

Don't know much about Perez but...
I'm pretty sure that the Boone Logan experience is proof enough that the Sox would consider him for the pen now.

by White Sox Randy on Dec 23, 2006 11:28 AM CST reply actions

logan
was pretty much out of necessity last year. really, who else did we have? montero and tracey didn't really do much better when they arrived. this year, we're stacked with arms. not necessarily great arms but we certainly won't have to go with an inexperienced guy.

i feel a hell of a lot better about our bullpen right now than i did around mid-march 2005 (or whenever it was clear that hermie wasn't right).

virtual locks for opening day pen: jenks, mac, thornton.

in the mixer: aardsma, haeger, sisco, logan, tracey, montero, phillips. maybe even a couple others.

outside of phillips - who probably is a stretch - all those guys have major league experience and are far better options than logan was last year. we just got blind-sided by hermie; not going to happen this year.

by larry on Dec 23, 2006 12:36 PM CST up reply actions

you can add
masset to that list now. the number of arms is staggering. logically, another trade is coming.

quite ironic because
whitesox.com just posted an article saying christmas had come early for McCarthy because he virtually has earned a rotation spot due to the Garcia departure

Land 2 prized prospects in return
In their never-ending quest for more young pitching, the White Sox shook up their staff Saturday by trading 23-year-old Brandon McCarthy to Texas for prized pitching prospects John Danks and Nick Masset.

In addition, the Sox sent minor league outfielder David Paisano to Texas for minor league pitcher Jacob Rasner.

Kenny is going nuts with the pitching prospect love.  I'm assuming that our 5th starter is now going to be either Gavin Floyd or Charlie Haeger.

by SSH2005 on Dec 23, 2006 1:46 PM CST reply actions

I agree...
Floyd or Haeger for the 5th spot. I don't have much faith in Floyd so I would guess that Haeger could win with Floyd in Charlotte with Danks, Gio and Broadway. I like that depth.

Also, even though I was unhappy a couple of weeks ago with the pen and wanted atleast one proven veteran, I have to say that a pen with Jenks, Thornton, MacDougal, Masset, Sisco and Aardsma looks pretty good.

But, Kenny still needs and OFer. Will one or more of these pitchers go ? I hope not. I'd love to see him somehow acquire one without trading any of these guys, ok Floyd, or Sweeney or Fields.
