White Sox Trade Bajenaru for Cintron...

from espn

TUCSON, Ariz.--  Infielder Alex Cintron was acquired by the Chicago White Sox from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday for pitcher Jeff Bajenaru.

A switch hitter, Cintron batted .273 with 19 doubles, eight home runs and 48 RBI in 122 games for the Diamondbacks last season, when he played second, third and shortstop. His three pinch-hit home runs tied for the NL lead.

I'm not really sure what to make of this right now, but it appears that Baj is NOT going to be in the Sox bullpen this summer.  Not to mention the fact that this is going to have quite an effect on how the bench shapes up.

Nothing earth-shattering, but I didn't see it posted, and I thought you guys might like to know about this. What do you guys suppose this is going to mean? I'm guessing this spells the end for Gload, or possibly Borchard, and that Ozuna will play some more outfield. Also this might be the precursor to another trade. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

2 things
A LOOGY is going get a bullpen job and either Borchard or Gload won't be with the Sox after Spring Training. I'm guessing Gload is gone (in which case I wish him good luck, it always looked to me like he could hit).

I don't really like the deal, just from a roster structure point of view. What's the point of having both Ozuna and Cintron?

Cintron
I hope we got the 2003 version.

salary
This does add more salary, Cintron agreed to a 1 yr/1.6 million dollar deal a few months ago to avoid arbitration.

First...
I'm glad that Bajenaru was traded for his sake. He's a really great guy, and deserves to get more than a cursory look at the big leagues. Right now, it appears that he is lacking something between the ears that is required of most major league pitchers. A better fastball would help too.

I watched part of the Puerto Rico-Panama game this morning at 2AM. Jose Valentin got the start at SS in what I think was an honorary gesture. After and inning, he moved to third and Cintron moved to short, where they would each spend the rest of the game. I was remembering near the trade deadline last year when Cintron was one of the utility guys that I thought the Sox should be targeting.

He's a solid enough back-up, but I can't really figure this move out. As many of you have noted, it likely spells the end for either Gload or Borchard -- It probably wouldn't be hard to trade either of them before the end of Spring either -- It could also be the end of Pablo Ozuna, whose primary job was as a back-up SS. He was the primary back-up at 3B last season also. With Mackowiak and Cintron now on board, I would argue that it's Pablo, not Gload or Borchard, whose time on the Southside has come to an end.

Frank Thomas would be pissed about this trade. Damn Kenny bringing in too many guys.

Borchard
I could see the Nationals trading for him.

I choose Gload over Ozuna.
Reason being is that I'd say Thome, Crede, Dye, and Podsednik to be most likely candidates to miss games over the course of the season.  Ozuna would be at best my third choice to fill in for any of these players.  Gload would be my first choice to replace Thome (actually I'd put PK at DH then Gload at 1B), who I figure to get the fewest AB's out of our starters.  This would allow Mack the freedom to still spell Crede and Anderson against tough righties.

The only other dynamic I can see hurting us with the absence of Ozuna is in pinch-running.  From what I've read so far, Cintron has at least slightly above average speed so I'm willing to sacrifice whatever is lost in the downgrade from Ozuna to Cintron in the pinch-running department.

I would too
I just think Ozzie will want that pinch runner (+ guy who can get a bunt down), so I give the edge to Ozuna.

Agreed
So if you want Gload to make the team, hope for him to get most of his remaining spring training action in the outfield.

It just doesn't seem to make much sense
to have both Ozuna AND Cintron.  Cintron is not slow, so even the pinch running is not that huge.

Gload complements Cintron much better.  I can't imagine why KW would have 2 infield guys without talking this through with Ozzie first.

Sense ...
Right -- when I saw the news I assumed it meant an upgrade from Ozuna.

I'd keep both
Ozuna and Cintron. I think Ozuna is considerably faster than Cintron (although I could be wrong), and having a decent pinch runner can be important in close games. It's one reason why I liked having Harris on the team last year.

I like Gload, but he's not an OF. Mack and Borchard should be the backups I think. The Sox will have Rogowski in Charlotte if they need a fill-in at 1B/DH. Gload's probably a better hitter, but Rogowski is lot like a younger version of Ross.

I think the Sox are thinner in the middle infield and it makes sense to hold onto Ozuna.

Maybe getting Cintron is a reaction to Iguchi looking bad this spring.

Re: bunting
I think Cintron has good bunting abilities.  I noticed that two years ago when he played a full season, he had 12 sacrifice hits.  That is 1 more than anyone had from our 2005 'sacrifice-happy' team.

I think Mackowiak...
is going to see alot more time in CF than we might think, and I think by getting Cintron, we still have another solid backup at 3b,2b,SS,ect..

Ozuna's Contract
should tell you who's going to be sent down...
[MLB4U]
Pablo Ozuna: signed deal for 2006 season worth 500K on 11/18/05- + he can earn 300K in bonuses including 100K bonuses for an MVP award or WS MVP award and 15K for Silver Slugger- + if in the minors, he will receive a 330K salary
He signed a split contract, which i believe allows him to be sent to the minors. Gload and Borch are out of options.

I'm happy for Bajenaru
I hope he relaxes a bit and find a nice role with the D'Backs.

I also like the trade from the Sox side.

Good to see that Cintron can rake against lefties.  The Sox needed that.

Here's the thing.  I'm not confident in Mackowiak playing CF (defensively) for an extended period of time.  I know the Sox seem all 'gung-ho' about Mack in CF, but I'm not buying it.

Borchard seems like the only guy who can do a halfway decent job out there.  That's the ONLY reason I want him on the roster.

Cintron Brings Depth Up The Middle
I believe that KW had a dream last night in which Tad Iguchi or Uribe both missed time this season.  When he woke up sweating with images of a 260/290/370 line from Ozuna, he called up the Diamondbacks.

This is a good trade from a SS/2B injury hedge bet perspective.
