stats
Jose Contreras is 10-1 with a 2.03 ERA since 8/1/05.

He's allowed just 4 HRs in 93 IP over that stretch. Amazingly, all of the HRs have been hit by the Tigers.

He's walking 2.1 Batters per 9 over that stretch, compared to a pre-8/05 average of 4.2 BB/9. He's cut his walk rate in half, while limiting HRs. That's one great recipe for success.

Joe Mays
is one of those guys who used to just kill us. From 1999-2001 he was 6-0 with an ERA around 2.50 against us. Luckily, that has changed over the past 4 years and he is giving up about 10 runs per 9 innings.

by krushcuts on Apr 17, 2006 6:52 PM CDT reply actions

The turning point was 8/02
Pre 8/02: 6-0, 2.53 ERA, 5.1 K/9, .36 HR/9
Post 7/02: 2-5, 8.78 ERA, 2.9 K/9, 2.48 HR/9

He stopped striking guys out and started giving up the longball.

Thome always cracks me up
but today's Pujols one is awesome:

FreelMyHeat:    Be careful, Dave, watch out for his patented, "Home Run" style swing!

 *Online Host*
Pujol_Junkie has hit the ball into the upper deck.

ArroyoFlush:   What're you doing, David, you aren't supposed to throw the ball TOWARD him!!!

FreelMyHeat:   I can't believe the government let him patent that!

Was that our first 3-run HR of the season?
For a team that has played a lot of Weaver-ball, we have been lacking in the 3-run shots so far this year.

baby steps
he's got 'hit' and 'run' down; now we just need to improve on 'base running'. it's a much more complex concept so give him time.

by larry on Apr 17, 2006 8:15 PM CDT up reply actions

And not striking out
because he just did that one again.

hey
if he does the 'hit' then 'run' then 'reach base safely' thing once out of every four times, i'll be happy. as far as i'm concerned, this has already been a successful day on offense for him. tomorrow: 'advancing safely on the basepaths'. by next week, he might even be up to the level of 'scoring'. don't hold your breath, though. baby steps.

Amazing what happens when Pods gets on base... !

by dsmiller on Apr 17, 2006 8:30 PM CDT reply actions

Yea for sure
I thought that Pods hit might have been gone. So Pods has a 3game hitting streak right? Good sign. Also, Paulie has just been tearing it up. And having Thome in front of him helps big time.

Royals
They get out of that inning, so that is a shame that our 5-7 couldn't get it done...but I noticed something...

I think that Timo Perez taught the Royals how to catch pop flys.

Anybody notice that KC had 27 ABs tonight?

One walk and one double down the line prevented a perfect game.

That's teh sux0rz for el Conde.

Wow, that 44 posts went fast.
Another great day for Chicago sports--Bulls win, and now with a win vs. Toronto will move up into the 7th spot, regardless of anyone elses play--due to the tiebraker in the Bull's favor.

Sox have, as quitely as possible for a WS champ, won 7 of 8
