Football Draft Thread
Since I figure many of us are watching this. For the record, I'd have taken Bush with the first pick. Curious who the Bears fans are hoping for. And a small prediction, the Vikes trade with SF for the 6th pick. Who do the Packers take at 5? If Millen picks another WR, does he survive the weekend?
Bonus question, does anyone watch the second day?

As for GB, I hope they take Hawk..but I'm afraid they will take V. Davis. I know it doesn't make sense, but I like Leinart and wouldn't mind drafting him (but Hawk is my pick).

Bears
I hope the Bears go defense. They always seem to screw up when they pick offense. The only way I'd go offense is if something happened like Chad Jackson falling all the way to 26. Really, though, the Bears need some depth. They're fine up front, could use an outside linebacker to replace Hillenmeyer, and could REALLY use a solid CB (then again, who couldn't?). I think I'd like to see them go CB, although I don't really know who's out there.

Tye Hill
I remember just back to 2001, and the Bears 13-3 season, I was extremely pumped for the playoffs. It's hard for me to get that excited for football now. Hell, it's behind hockey at this point on my big four (MLB, NHL, NFL, NBA).

If Mel Kiper Jr. did the MLB draft...
<cut to tape of Broadway>
"If you look at Broadway, you see that he'll throw you any pitch in any count. That's what the pro scouts are lookin for. The pitchability. He may not have the live arm that some of the other pitchers taken in the first round, but he's polished. That's why I had him as my #18. He'll work quickly, pound the strike zone. He's a safe pick who will make an impact on the big league level within a year."<passes out>

He won't be a bust, but
He's not as talented as some of the other recent Hawkeyes to go in the first round. (Dallas Clark, Matt Roth, Gallery) or even Bob Sanders who went in the second round (That was one pick that I loved.)

GB
Due to various trades, they went from Walker, 36th & 57th to having the 47th, 52nd, 67th, 75th and 93rd.

Cornerback
Then in the second round, it looked like Ashton Youboty who is somehow still available. Most people looked for him to go in the first.
Anyone know about the D2 guy we got?

The losers
They didn't get great value for Javon Walker, only getting a second-round choice instead of two seconds, which they were demanding Friday. While A.J. Hawk was a great choice to help the defense, the Packers didn't do much to help Brett Favre. They didn't get tight end Vernon Davis, but that's OK. Hawk rated higher on most draft boards than Davis. The Packers had a decent second-round for the future in getting tackle Daryn Colledge and wide receiver Greg Jennings, who might take some time to make impact. But this is Favre's last year, and he is committed to making the best out of the season. As it has been the entire offseason, the Packers haven't seized the moment.

The Bears HAVE to be the biggest losers
Only the Bills can compete.
by The Cheat on Apr 30, 2006 1:10 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Nope, at least not to Clayton.
- Matt Leinart - For being 10th and losing lots of monies.
- Reggie Bush - For losing #1 selection.
- Bills.
- USC - For not having players selected as high as other schools.
- Claude Wroten - For failing drug test and getting arrested.

I don't mind trading down
I just don't understand taking TWO DBs/special-teams guys in round two. I actually like the Manning pick, not so much the Devin Hester pick.
And yes, I would've liked to have seen the Bears grab Pope with that second second-rounder.

Yes
Compare and contrast Bears management with Sox management right now. Do you think KW would shrink from a task the way Angelo does?

I don't think you can count on our defense
Honestly, even though the Bears went 11-5 last year, I really didn't enjoy watching them play much last year. I am sick and tired of 3 and outs, 5 yard passes on 3rd and 6, and being the only team in the league to not use a tight end.
Maybe this year can be the one year that Rex is healthy, and even if he doesn't, we finally have an NFL replacement, but the Bears are still very thin at WR, have an aging O-line, and of course, do not have any talent at TE.
Why we went through an entire off season without attemptint to address that is beyond me. It is as if the front office made a concerted effort to settle for mediocrity.

The thing is....
They think that they have their five guys in (watch me butcher these names) Mushin Muhahmmed, Justin Gage, Bernard Berrian, Mark Bradley, and Airese Curry.
I'm lukewarm on this group. Moose got big bucks and doesn't seem like a real #1, go-to receiver. Curry has barely played at all. Bradley and Berrian I like a little bit, both have some good speed. I like Gage a lot, and have liked him since he was drafted. The guy can jump like hell, and I can see him having a big year (TD wise) if the Bears actually used him in the redzone. I'd love to see some more jump ball plays, seeing as there's very few (if any) DBs that can get up as high as Gage can.
I liked Moss and Pope specifically coming into this draft, and really would've like to have seen the Bears grab one of them in the second round.
Other than that, though, I can't say I'm in a position to complain. I didn't do a whole lot of "homework" on potential draftees going into the draft, and for whatever reason, the Bears have pretty much zero luck/competance drafting players on the offensive side of the ball. Angelo seems to have a nack for finding good defensive players in the mid-to-late rounds of the draft, so I'm perfectly okay with the drafting of so many defensive players.
Just a little peeved that they went with Hester over Pope. 'Tis all.

BTW -- does anyone read any of the stuff over at Football Outsiders? It's sort of what Baseball Prospectus is to baseball -- applying "Moneyball" (if that's what you want to call it) to football.
They do some good work over there, it's a site I'd definitely recommend taking a look at. I'd bet that the content will soon be 'priced', too, so get it while ya can.

Offseason
the offseaon is only half over. i think angelo will pick up a tight end by pre-season. from his comments about not having a TE since ditka, it appears that he and turner don't feel a TE is an integral part of the bears run-based offense.

Yeah...
With that being said, I'm still shocked they didn't take Pope. Wasn't he thought to go somewhere in the first round? Why did he drop so far?
Maybe the fact that they didn't get a tight end indicates that they're thinking of go back to the T-formation that once thrilled the nation?
