Football Draft Thread

Since I figure many of us are watching this.  For the record, I'd have taken Bush with the first pick.  Curious who the Bears fans are hoping for.  And a small prediction, the Vikes trade with SF for the 6th pick.  Who do the Packers take at 5?  If Millen picks another WR, does he survive the weekend?
Bonus question, does anyone watch the second day?

I feel bad for Bush...(and McAllister)

As for GB, I hope they take Hawk..but I'm afraid they will take V. Davis.  I know it doesn't make sense, but I like Leinart and wouldn't mind drafting him (but Hawk is my pick).

yay
GB goes with Hawk.  Potential top 5 D now.

Line:  KGB, Kampman, Pickett, Peterson (or Jenkins)
LB:  Hawk, Barnett, Ben Taylor (or Poppinga)
Secondary:  Harris, Woodson, Manuel, Collins

Bears
Enough of this Green Bay talk -- phhh...   = P

I hope the Bears go defense.  They always seem to screw up when they pick offense.  The only way I'd go offense is if something happened like Chad Jackson falling all the way to 26.  Really, though, the Bears need some depth.  They're fine up front, could use an outside linebacker to replace Hillenmeyer, and could REALLY use a solid CB (then again, who couldn't?).  I think I'd like to see them go CB, although I don't really know who's out there.

Tye Hill
I assume he's a CB, yes?  Like I said, I'm really "dumb" (for lack of a better word) w/r/t the players in this years draft, as football has really fallen for me.

I remember just back to 2001, and the Bears 13-3 season, I was extremely pumped for the playoffs.  It's hard for me to get that excited for football now.  Hell, it's behind hockey at this point on my big four (MLB, NHL, NFL, NBA).

If Mel Kiper Jr. did the MLB draft...
"If you look at Lance Broadway, you see that he is a pitcher. 6'2" 210 lbs. out of TCU, early entry, just a junior. Fastball about 90MPH, big league 12-6 curveball, needs to work on his changeup. Nobody has moved up the last three weeks more than Broadway. There were questions about the competition he faced while at TCU, but strong showings as he lead the Horned Frogs into the College World Series moved him from a late first/early second rounder to the middle of the first round.<breath>
<cut to tape of Broadway>
"If you look at Broadway, you see that he'll throw you any pitch in any count. That's what the pro scouts are lookin for. The pitchability. He may not have the live arm that some of the other pitchers taken in the first round, but he's polished. That's why I had him as my #18. He'll work quickly, pound the strike zone. He's a safe pick who will make an impact on the big league level within a year."<passes out>

Cheat -- What can you tell me/us about Greenway?
You watch more Big 10/Iowa football than I do, so...?

by CWSKeith on Apr 29, 2006 1:55 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

He won't be a bust, but
He's not going to make a huge impact with the Vikes. He's just a solid NFL player. He struggled a bit this year with the Hawks having almost no defensive line, but led the Big Ten (I think) in tackles the two previous seasons.

He's not as talented as some of the other recent Hawkeyes to go in the first round. (Dallas Clark, Matt Roth, Gallery) or even Bob Sanders who went in the second round (That was one pick that I loved.)

LB North
The NFC North likes its LB's of the first round varity this year. The Bears are a possibility taking one too.

Cornerback
I was hoping the Bears would take Mercedes Lewis or a wide receiver, but that didn't materialize after the trade.

Then in the second round, it looked like Ashton Youboty who is somehow still available. Most people looked for him to go in the first.

Anyone know about the D2 guy we got?

i must say
i'm disappointed the bears didn't take an offensive player. i realize one of the guys is a return man so that's good but the problem was offense last year. i was hoping to at least address the issue at TE or WR.

GB
I think GB had a very good Day 1 of the draft.  With Hawk and Hodge, they have 2 very good linebackers to complement Barnett.  I like the lineman they drafted, they should fill in the interior of that line.  also, they probably picked one of my favorite receivers in the draft with Greg Jennings.

The losers
4. Green Bay Packers:

They didn't get great value for Javon Walker, only getting a second-round choice instead of two seconds, which they were demanding Friday. While A.J. Hawk was a great choice to help the defense, the Packers didn't do much to help Brett Favre. They didn't get tight end Vernon Davis, but that's OK. Hawk rated higher on most draft boards than Davis. The Packers had a decent second-round for the future in getting tackle Daryn Colledge and wide receiver Greg Jennings, who might take some time to make impact. But this is Favre's last year, and he is committed to making the best out of the season. As it has been the entire offseason, the Packers haven't seized the moment.

The Bears HAVE to be the biggest losers
right?

Only the Bills can compete.

AIM: SouthSideCheat

by The Cheat on Apr 30, 2006 1:10 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nope, at least not to Clayton.
  1.  Matt Leinart - For being 10th and losing lots of monies.
  2.  Reggie Bush - For losing #1 selection.
  3.  Bills.
  4.  USC - For not having players selected as high as other schools.
  5.  Claude Wroten - For failing drug test and getting arrested.
However, if 4 of the top 6 losers were actually NFL teams, the Bears would surely make it.

I was very pleased with the first two picks by the Vikes.  Both Greenway and Griffin look like solid players.  Cook and Jackson both look like reaches to me.  Looks like the new coach is trying to prove himself 'smartest guy in the league' or something.  Doesn't make me confident.

That sums it up
The Bears pussed out (sorry, there is no polite way of phrasing it) by dealing their first round pick.  They could have drafted a stud TE like Leonard Pope and filled a hole that has been there for...I can't even remember when the Bears had a decent TE.  This is typical Jerry Angelo garbage.

by the wolf on Apr 30, 2006 5:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Pope didn't get picked until the 3rd Rd
Which makes their 2 second round picks puzzling.

by chrome on Apr 30, 2006 7:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't mind trading down
First rounders usually get a ton of money, and the better value is in getting more second round picks.  I don't mind that one bit.

I just don't understand taking TWO DBs/special-teams guys in round two.  I actually like the Manning pick, not so much the Devin Hester pick.

And yes, I would've liked to have seen the Bears grab Pope with that second second-rounder.

by CWSKeith on Apr 30, 2006 6:12 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes
Agreed, I don't mind trading down in theory, but the Bears had the opportunity to address a need and instead chose to go with the past of least resistance.  That's what losing teams do.

Compare and contrast Bears management with Sox management right now.  Do you think KW would shrink from a task the way Angelo does?

by the wolf on Apr 30, 2006 7:15 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

defense
the lack of a tight-end didn't cause the bears to lose their playoff game.  the defense lost that game.  the offense actually put some points on the board against a good defense.  i think this draft is a reflection of the loss of azumah and green, coupled with a big question mark in mike brown.  perhaps management knows something about his status that they aren't saying out loud.

by cnobody on Apr 30, 2006 10:24 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't think you can count on our defense
winning us 11 games year after year.  Our offense has been absolutely pathetic for so long now it's ridiculous.  Sure they needed to address certain areas in our defense.  But for the Bears to manage to not draft a TE, in a draft deep in that position, takes some seriously bad decision making.

Honestly, even though the Bears went 11-5 last year, I really didn't enjoy watching them play much last year.  I am sick and tired of 3 and outs, 5 yard passes on 3rd and 6, and being the only team in the league to not use a tight end.

Maybe this year can be the one year that Rex is healthy, and even if he doesn't, we finally have an NFL replacement, but the Bears are still very thin at WR, have an aging O-line, and of course, do not have any talent at TE.

Why we went through an entire off season without attemptint to address that is beyond me.  It is as if the front office made a concerted effort to settle for mediocrity.

by chrome on Apr 30, 2006 10:55 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

also,
I believe Green Bay could win the division next year.  They aren't necessarily my pick, but I wouldn't be surprised.  Their defense is improved (it was 7th last year), the offense has to be better (since I don't expect to be down to the 5th string RB again or have Chatman as the #2 receiver for most of the year or have Favre play that poorly as he did in the 2nd half).  Also, although they were 4-12, they lost 5 games by 3 points or less.

The thing is....
The Bears believe that they have a good core of wide receivers.

They think that they have their five guys in (watch me butcher these names) Mushin Muhahmmed, Justin Gage, Bernard Berrian, Mark Bradley, and Airese Curry.

I'm lukewarm on this group.  Moose got big bucks and doesn't seem like a real #1, go-to receiver.  Curry has barely played at all.  Bradley and Berrian I like a little bit, both have some good speed.  I like Gage a lot, and have liked him since he was drafted.  The guy can jump like hell, and I can see him having a big year (TD wise) if the Bears actually used him in the redzone.  I'd love to see some more jump ball plays, seeing as there's very few (if any) DBs that can get up as high as Gage can.

I liked Moss and Pope specifically coming into this draft, and really would've like to have seen the Bears grab one of them in the second round.

Other than that, though, I can't say I'm in a position to complain.  I didn't do a whole lot of "homework" on potential draftees going into the draft, and for whatever reason, the Bears have pretty much zero luck/competance drafting players on the offensive side of the ball.  Angelo seems to have a nack for finding good defensive players in the mid-to-late rounds of the draft, so I'm perfectly okay with the drafting of so many defensive players.

Just a little peeved that they went with Hester over Pope.  'Tis all.

---------------------------

BTW -- does anyone read any of the stuff over at Football Outsiders?  It's sort of what Baseball Prospectus is to baseball -- applying "Moneyball" (if that's what you want to call it) to football.

They do some good work over there, it's a site I'd definitely recommend taking a look at.  I'd bet that the content will soon be 'priced', too, so get it while ya can.

Yeah I know - and I don't get it.
I like Bradley and Gage, but I don't think you could rate our receiving corps as being anything but below average, average at best.

Offseason
"Why we went through an entire off season without attemptint to address that is beyond me."

the offseaon is only half over.  i think angelo will pick up a tight end by pre-season.  from his comments about not having a TE since ditka, it appears that he and turner don't feel a TE is an integral part of the bears run-based offense.

by cnobody on May 1, 2006 6:10 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah...
I was thinking the same thing about Brown.  He's a terrific player, when he's out there, but the injuries are starting pile up a bit, and these picks may indicate that there is more going on than meets the eye.

With that being said, I'm still shocked they didn't take Pope.  Wasn't he thought to go somewhere in the first round?  Why did he drop so far?

Maybe the fact that they didn't get a tight end indicates that they're thinking of go back to the T-formation that once thrilled the nation?
