White Sox @ Royals -- Vazquez vs. Bautista

I know that Javier Vazquez' initials spell out JV, and the Royals will be fighting for the worst record in the league at the end of the year, but that doesn't mean we have to put another Junior Varsity squad out there again today.

Scott Podsednik is supposed to be back in the line-up. No word as to whether he's still running like a Pinto instead of Porsche.

Javier Vazquez (0-0, 0.00) vs. Denny Bautista (0-0, 0.00)

Vazquez was looking
really good today. He gave up a smash hit to grudzi and then drilled Sweeney on the Elbow. Reggie Sanders hit a pretty well located fast ball to left center to drive in 2 runs. The Sox only run came on a sac fly by Crede to drive in Thome who got on by a walk, and advanced to 3rd by a Konerko single.

The Sox only 2 hits comming from AJ and Konerko.

Anderson is really starting to annoy me. When he swings the bat, he does fine. But he has struck out twice this game, and both times looking. He always seems to get in the whole 0-2, 1-2, and then takes the next couples pitches. He needs to swing a bit on close pitches. Better to Strikeout swinging  then sitting there and letting a strike go past you.

One of the k's
the ball was clearly inside. Anderson wasn't fooled by that breaking pitch [if his knees buckled, and didn't pick up the pitch, I'd be more concerned]. He saw it coming inside, and laid off the pitch. The ump blew that one.

I have held off judgment on Brian taking over for Aaron as I hadn't seen much of Anderson. But I like what I see both on offense and defense. He has a nice approach at the plate, not trying to do too much, hitting the ball where its pitched, and showing patience. On defense, he covers a lot of ground seemingly with little effort.

CF shouldn't be a big concern, if Anderson stays healthy.

Agreed on Anderson's Ks
the same is true for Ryan Sweeney in AAA right now. He's striking out at a much higher rate than ever before, but most of it is looking. He's just learning the zone. Seeing pitches run back to the black of plate that he hasn't seen before. He'll adjust and develop.

Jeez...
2 hits through 7 innings today?  Come on.

by madvillian on Apr 8, 2006 3:14 PM CDT reply actions

U got your wish Madvillian
The Sox got a leadoff double from Anderson. With Pods comming up, he was attempting to bunt. After he got 2 strikes on him, he laced a single to left to move anderson to 3rd. 1st and 3rd with Iguchi. Gooch pops it up VERY high to 2nd. No one advances. Thome up now. He hits a line-drive about 200 MPH off the left field wall. He hit it so hard, Pods was not able to score from 1st. Pods on 3rd, Thome at 2nd with 1 out. They walk Konerko to get to AJ.

AJ hits a groundball to right. Mienkevich (sp?) makes a nice diving grab, comes up with the ball, but has no where to throw it since no one was covering 1st, and Pods was too fast to get at home. Sox scored there 3rd run of the game to take the lead 3-2. Crede just GIDP to end the inning.

Bottom 8th
3-2 White Sox

Vazquez still in line for the win. Not sure if hes coming out for the 8th.

Politte comes in for Vazquez
Even though Vazquez had a nice day, it was the right move. Grudzi was due up 1st, and he was 2-3 against Vazquez, hitting him hard both times.

Vazquez final line:
7IP, 5 hits, 2 ER, 1 BB, 7 K's
2.57 ERA

He did pretty well. Its nice to have a starting pitcher who might actually get a win. (contreras should have, damn logan).

Meanwhile, grudzi just hit his 3rd hit of the game.

You've got to be kidding me right?
Sweeney goes yard of Politte. This is getting rediculous. I am so pissed right now. Another good start, squandered away.

Bottom 8th
4-3 Royals

Sox start 2006 season 1-4. Im ashamed.

Sweeney vs. Politte
Before this at bat Sweeney was 3 for 7 against him.
2 doubles and a homerun. A modest OPS of 1.587.

4 for 8 now, that sucks.

Not a good sign
What a disappointment.  I am in the UK with the military, and I just logged on to MLB.com in time to see Sweeney jack one off Politte.  Although there are plenty of ways to shake this start off as not being that big of a deal (Paulie stating that this team is a different team than last year, so do not read into any particular loss), if we keep losing games like this for the next week or so, I would have to say we do not have the focus. I am a bit worried because it is obvious the divisional foes will be gunning for us all year.  Losing divisonal games like this no matter when they occur is not a good sign.

B-Mac
needs to be the right handed set-up man.  He should have been in the game.

by the wimperoo on Apr 8, 2006 5:12 PM CDT reply actions

soon, maybe
bmac should equal scot shields (eventually). but i don't think he can be thrown into that role. i doubt he's able to pitch every other day or on back to back days, if need be. there's no need to be too aggressive with this guy's arm.

dumb
I was at the Brewer/DBack game (Great game), but I was always watching the Sox score.  Too bad they disappointed me.  I actually guessed right that Sweeney hit the HR off of Politte. I'm glad Vazquez looked good...but 1-4 is really upsetting.

Laughing in Detroit
Yeah didn't you guys say that the Tigers proved they could beat a AAA team with the sweep in KC. Looks like Ozzie putrs out the best you have, and you still lose to the AAA team. Nice victory lap. I can't wait for Bonderman and Opening Day agianst the Champs. Bring It.

Five games in and already talking smack
Talk to me when it's August 1st and the Tigers are in first place.

You've gotta crow about something
when you haven't finished above .500 since the AL Central was formed. That takes work when the Central has long been called the worst division in baseball.

some Good News
Wisconsin won the NCAA Hockey Championship.  Their Women's team also won, and the Cross Country team also won the National Championship.

You know...
I bank my whole offseason projections on Pecota (or like-minded projection), my own observations, and what I get from Madame Larue--so I'm not ready to write this season off at all.

Oh well, the Sox are 1-4, it's April, and the bullpen looks shakey as hell.

Is the bullpen the new 5th starter--frankly, it's too early to give a damn my dears.

Screw it, the Bulls lost to the Sixers tonight and Tiger moved up the leaderboard--that's more than enough to keep my mind off the Sox's early season record.

Worrisome start
Lots of teams have had bad starts and pulled themselves up to be in the pennant race in September (which is really all I ask for as a fan). The difficulty for the Sox is that they are in a tough division, and can't afford to lose to the Royals. And I'm not looking forward to seeing Tigers offense with the way the Sox are pitching right now.

I think the Sox are definitely going make a trade for a RP, sooner rather than later. And I think they'll end up trading a SP to get a closer. I'd also really like them to pick up a RH OF that can get on base and catch a ball, but unfortunately I think the Pablo Ozuna love train is probably going to roll on.
