Sox trade Javier Lopez to BOS for David Riske

I'm hearing secondhand that Bruce Levine reported this on ESPN 1000 a little bit ago...

He came off the DL recently, should be a more solid arm in the pen, and will probably contribute more than Lopez would have this year.  Maybe the real reason Tracey was sent down yesterday?

I suppose he takes over what we thought was Politte's role going into the season?

[editor's note, by thewizardsofoz] as hiphopnerd pointed, it's now official:

The Chicago White Sox have acquired veteran right-handed pitcher David Riske from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for left-handed pitcher Javier Lopez and optioned right-handed pitcher Sean Tracey to Class AAA Charlotte.

Certainly
A great trade if true.  We obviously didn't like Lopez and Riske is an established respectable middle reliever.  Of course Lopez had allowed 2 runs in 33 innings in Charlotte, so why he wasn't up is a mystery.

Yeah
As we wait for something official to come through...

The reason is...
Because bringing him up at any point this year... and having him fail brings down his stock incredibly (which is extremely likely). I believe lopez does not even stay on the red sox roster the rest of the year while riske will for the sox... which will show why he was never brought up to hinder his value.

If it is official
I'm guessing it is, but it ends up being a great deal for Chicago.  With Cotts & Thornton, the White Sox had no need for another lefty.  I just hope Riske's back holds up.

I'll always love Riske
for producing one of the great '05 moments.

I assume...
if Politte is really back next week, Montero will be gone and we'll at least have a bullpen full of major leaguers?

I would reserve judgement on that
until seeing Politte pitch a couple times...

Little bit torn
I think this is probably a good trade for the Sox (White), but I would have liked to see what Lopez could do.  He was putting up some intriguing numbers.  I reckon we'll see what he can do at some point, just not with our Sox.  When all is said and done, I prefer to have the experienced, proven guy in the pen when we're making a run at the division.

Righty vs. lefty
I think Riske vs. Lopez was simply a matter of righty vs. lefty. Before this trade our #1 RH setup guy was Montero (If you consider McCarthy's best role as long reliever pitching 2-4 innings at a time). Now Riske takes over that role.

This series of events shows how brilliant KW's stockpiling of lefties was during ST

Another reason
I know relievers tend to be very volatile, but at one point in his career, Riske was actually a pretty damn good reliever.  I say that like he was good two-three years ago, but in actuality, he's been solid for the past three years.  It looks like last year, his K rate fell a bit, but his control improved immensely (sp?).

Lopez, OTOH, has only had one decent season, coming all the way back in 2003.

I really like this trade a lot.  Thumbs up, Kenny.

Trade Info
Sons of Sam Horn has an excellent and informative thread about this trade if you're interested.

The majority opinion over their seems to think Lopez will amount to nothing more than a passable LOOGY, and that Riske will be a servicable low leverage guy this year.

Personally, I like the deal.  We have plenty of lefties in the pen, we just need more guys that can actually get major leaguers out--now, at almost no cost, we have one more of those guys.
