Mr. 400

Tonight, Pablo Ozuna went 3/5 with 2 runs and rose his average to .438.  He also made a nice defensive play in the 9th inning.  I know his .400 BA will not last, but I've been saying this for a long time now.    I'm glad Ozzie continues to find ways to get him in the game.

Jose Contreras struck out a career high 13 batters, but still was roughed up for 5 runs.  Many people, myself included, look at K/9 IP as a way to evaluate pitchers, but tonight Jose showed us why it isn't always the best indicator.  Strikeouts normally take more pitches than any other out, resulting in higher pitch counts, less innings pitched and more work for the bullpen.  In that regard, not having a true strikeout ace benefits the White Sox.

Speaking of defense, Cincinnati helped the White Sox a lot in this win.  In the 6th inning, Paul Konerko would have been thrown out at the plate had Ryan Freel not foolishly cut the ball off.  Also, a botched Double Play in the 9th resulted in the 2 go ahead runs for Chicago.  Both balls were hit by Joe Crede, proving the magic that his bat possesses.

Finally, outside of Bobby Jenks shaky 9th inning, the bullpen for the White Sox continues to improve.  I continue to be amazed at the development of Matt Thornton.  His progress made Javier Lopez expendable.

ah so.....
i forgot pro ball players took time off to serve... my bad.

somebody should forward this post off to reifert, et al. i bet they'd get a kick out of shaftr's photoshopping skills.

although i've rarely seen an actual, honest-to-god, bought, licensed copy of photoshop (outside of profs with stupid large budgets).

Quick Flub diversion
I was in Wrigleyville last night. The Tiger fans outnumbered the Cub fans at the game. I heard from the bar manager where I go they had 8 fights in his place alone.

So today they trot out a guy who's been on the DL all year to face the Tigers. I can't wait to see my least favorite pitcher get shelled. We better sweep the Cubs this time because now its really payback time.

I will say that listening to the Cub broadcast was worth a lot of laughs. Ron Santo is really funny - if you hate the Cubs.

Comonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn You White Sox!

joe cowley:
im Thome has spent the last two days getting in extra batting practice and as much work at first base during batting practice as possible in anticipation of his 2006 debut at first base this afternoon. "We've prepared really well,'' Thome said. "I've done my work. Now it's a situation of getting into the game. Hopefully when I get out there it will all sink in and you remember things, just how it feels and that. I'm looking forward to it.''

mark gonzales:

Jim Thome will undergo a series of mental tests while also trying to solve Reds right-hander Aaron Harang at the plate Sunday as the White Sox slugger starts his first game at first base since June 30, 2005.

credible reasoning?
mark gonzales:
Freddy Garcia attributed his effectiveness after the first inning of Friday's victory to changing speeds on all his pitches and not relying solely on his fastball, which got him into trouble in his four previous starts. The Reds noticed later that Garcia was varying the speeds on his slider from 80 to 85 m.p.h.
