Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Where are you from?

Many people have commented on how glad they are to have this site to come to (and I agree!).  The biggest plus for me is that I have intelligent people I can discuss my favorite team with.  This probably isn't a problem for you Chicago based readers, but for the rest of us it's a big deal.
This made me wonder where the other out-of-towners live.  I know we've got some on the west coast, some on the east and even one devoted fan in the UK.  Just curious about the rest.
I'll go first.  I live in Minneapolis.  I became a White Sox fan almost by accident back in '87.  Followed them on a whim and have loved them ever since.
Where are the rest of you from?

I agree
Yeah, the best thing Ozzie can do is move on to being less combative.  Currently the media is baiting "whoever" to say something even remotely anti-Ozzie in order to get Ozzie to respond.

Time to get bigger than that because its a battle he can never win.

Grew up in Flossmoor (south burbs) and graduated from the U. of Illinois.  Now live in the RDU Airport/Cary area in NC and work in Durham.  I've been here long enough now that I wasn't upset when the locals got to celebrate the Hurricanes winning the Stanley Cup.

Sox Siberia
Rogers's Park. Right off Clark street about as far north as you can get and still be in Chicago. Aside from being an exile in Cubville I love it up here.

My dad and his relatives are from the south side - so I've got south side blood.

Grew up in
St. Charles IL, now living in Baltimore.

Also, Peder--I lived in Minneapolis from 1992 - 2004, and really liked it.  We'll actually probably move back there after my wife's fellowship.  If I do, we'll have to get together at some local joints to watch a game or two.

So I'm entitled to a ring, right?
Grew up in Macomb, Illinois (small university town in western Illinois) surrounded by Cub and Cardinal fans my entire life. Moved to Chicago about a year ago. Which brings up an interesting story:

My dad lived in Chicago his entire life but moved away toward the end of the '59 season to go to college. We all know how the Sox faired in that series.

46 years later, after I finished college, I moved to Chicago mid-2005 season. I guess the Sox just need someone with our DNA in the city limits to win a title.

From Central illinois
From Jacksonville - have been a Sox fan since early 80's, but faded after the strike, white flag, and letting Ventura walk. Came back in 04 and am staying. Those Cub and Cardinal fans are thick here also, the Cardinal fans are all presently mumbling and looking dazed, though!

Northwest Suburbs...
Rolling Meadows is my hometown, went to U of Illinois, lived on 115th and Pulaski for a year, but just moved out to Boulder, CO last August (perfect timing, I know).

I'm a Sox fan through birth, but my Dad crossed over in 1969 when Ron Santo went off in the papers on a rookie centerfielder who made an error during their pennant race.  I have always wanted to meet Santo and thank him for being a complete douche, causing me to become a Sox fan.

Western NC
Have been a ChiSox fan all my life...my grandfather drove a hospital bus on the southside for many years and passed along his love/hate for the Sox to me. I followed them until the 1994 disappointment and resumed following them again in 2000.

Now I'm trying to get family and friends to convert from the darkside (northside) as I toil in the Asheville, NC area.

I discovered this blog midway through the season last year and it was awesome to be a part of it during the roller coaster that was Aug, Sep, and Oct 2005!

I was at the Jack Morris no-hitter

Far North Side
I'm from Sauganash, a NW Side neighborhood. Baseball fan fan all my life, Sox fan from Kindergarten, from all those free tickets I used to get from things like 'Book It!' and other school activities.
A mancrush on Crede??? Nah.

by mlaird on Jun 27, 2006 1:50 PM CDT reply actions

HA!
I grew up in the southwest suburb of Downers Grove.  Currently living on the North Side near Clark and Diversey.

As a kid I went to a ton of games at old Comiskey because of 'Book It' and a straight A's program my elementary school had.  We were usually in the outfield upper deck, but I didn't care, it was still awesome. I even ended up going to the final game at old Comiskey.

My dad grew up on the south side so my brother and I picked up the Sox love through osmosis.  Been a huge fan ever since.

All I ever got from 'Book it'
was personal pan pizzas at Pizza Hut.

A beautiful day in the neighborhood
Clark and Diversey, eh? Cool, I'm at Lincoln & Diversey. You wouldn't happen to know of any good bars in the neighborhood that show Sox games, would you?

by brookswashere on Jun 28, 2006 12:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Not really
I usually just show up and ask them to put it on if it isn't already.  Lately I've been going to Trinity Bar on Halsted.  It used to be Peg Leg Sullivans, but it's since been redone.  They have $3 Guiness on tap every night of the week.  You can't beat that.

Thanks
I'll have to check that place out. And afterwards I can hop across the street and grab a donut, haha.

by brookswashere on Jun 28, 2006 5:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Could be wrong...
...but I think Schubas @ Belmont & Southport is a Sox  friendly bar (in addition to being a great music venue).  I'm also under the impression that Map Room (Armitage & Hoyne) is Sox friendly (in addition to being an excellent beer bar).  By Sox friendly, I mean that the game will usually be on and you won't have to ask for it, and there might be a few other sox fans about, though certainly not a big group watching.

There are places around...I know this has come up on WSI before, and I imagine some digging there or on Soxtalk could provide a few answers...

Also
If you want to make the trip farther north, The Globe on Irving just east of Damen will work.  You may have to battle the random rugby, Aussie Rules Football or soccer match but they will have the Sox game.  I know one of the owners too, so I can give him some shite!

by the wolf on Jun 29, 2006 1:35 AM CDT up reply actions

Very cool
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll definitely check all of those places out (I've been meaning to go to the Map Room anyway). Maybe for the upcoming Sox/Cubs series we could organize a meeting at one of those places - drown out some of the Cub fans.

Jefferson Park
Been a northsider my whole life, except for a brief stint when I was 5-6 years old living outside of St. Louis.  Now near Montrose and Damen.  There are more Sox fans up here than you would expect.  Any playoff games I watched in the bars up here were 100% solid behind the Sox.

Lawrence & Damen
Gio's on the corner of Damen & Ainslie (a block north of Lawrence) has Cubs umbrellas on their tables outside, but all the bartenders are Sox fans.

...but going to school in East Lansing, MI.

I'm really surprised at how many non-Chicagoans/Southsiders there are on this blog.  There really can't be this many, since nobody outside of the Southside cares about the Sox, right ESPN?

Orland Park
Now living around Ashland & Addison, i.e. close enough to wrigley that I need a night game permit for my car.

Sox fan since birth thanks to my dad, with a few years of post-strike indifference.  And I certainly never got anything other than personal pan pizzas from Book It...

Pilsen.
I can hear the fireworks after every homer and win unless the wind is blowing east.

I grew up downstate amid the Cubs/Cards madness but got into the Sox around the time Frank Thomas came into the league and he became my favorite player.  The first time I came up for a game was to see Frank vs. Ken Griffey Jr. because these two players were the prize of my baseball card collection.

Hey
Maybe us northsiders should go to Goose Island Wrigley for one the Flubs series. Goose Clyborne gets a lot of Sox Fans BTW. Luv dem brew pubs. I envy Madvillian becasue my favorate is in Kalamazoo.

Been here all my life.

Will be attending Marquette University (Milwaukee) next fall, hoping to eventually major in Accounting along with passing the CPA (I think that's what it's called).

Gonna be a tough September and (hopefully) October for me, watching most of the games on MLB.tv.
