Who had the most surprising first half?

We're nearing the end of the first half of the season, with the Sox currently standing in second at  50-26.  However, the way we've gone about getting to 50 wins has been quite a bit different than the way we were winning games this time last year.  At this point in the season, which player has surprised you most with their play(good or bad)?

If there are any players I am missing, please add to the comments section below.

Bobby Jenks
I never would have expected him to be so dominating. I expected flashes of dominance mixed with lots of inconsistency.

Jermaine Dye would be second, I suppose. Crede isn't a surprise at all to me. I think a lot of us saw Joe Crede coming.

I agree with you on Jenks.
I'm absolutely thrilled with how dominating he has become this year, to the point where you don't even worry about him coming in on the third consecutive night.  But with Crede, while I expected this season to be closer to post-DL 2005 than pre-DL Crede, he's really only had one bad road trip the entire season.  That's some remarkable consistency from a guy who had yet to show it at the major league level.

Crede...
I didn't expect him to be as consistent at the plate as he has been.  And I think Dye is only slightly above the numbers I expected from him, which I would attribute to Thome and Konerko hitting in front of him.

In a bad way
Jon Garland.

Obviously, a lot of that has to do with BAPIP as he's been a little unlucky this year, but there's no chance in hell I would've believed you if you had told me Garland would have an ERA approaching 6.00 for the first half.

I didn't expect Jon Garland of 2005, but at worst, I was thinking the usual Garland -- 4.50 ERA, a little inconsistent.

He needs to rebound against the Cubbies on Friday in a big way.

Sock it Thome
My vote was Thome. I think we were all a bit worried about the potential of injury (and we're still not quite at the half-mark, let's hope he holds up). Providing he stayed healthy, I expected him to be solid, but in no way expected him to lead the league in HR, RBIs, runs...

Plus the effect he has had on the bats of Dye and Paulie is another surprising perk. Not to mention the unquantifiable effect he's having on the clubhouse as a whole.

What about Thornton?
His solid performance is certainly one of the biggest surprises...we were (not undeservedly) expecting an awful reliever who would blow any lead handed to him and dig bigger holes if we were already down...we've gotten (thanks to Coop), a reliable lefty with great K capabilities.  Certainly better in this role than Marte was the last few years...

i'd half vote for thornton
i'd probably use the other half for BMac; i thought he would be much better out of the pen than he has been. sure, new role and young kid, so i see why maybe he wouldn't be included in the poll. crede's numbers don't suprise me; i expected them about two years ago. now it's just nice that i can finally have people stop looking at me like i'm crazy when i tell them crede will be a very good hitter in this league.
