Joey Cora == Jeff Gillooly?

Sox and AL coach Joey Cora accidentally hit Zambrano in his throwing elbow with a fungo bat before the game. X-rays were negative, but Zambrano was ruled out of the game.

Whether or not Headcase grabbed his elbow and screamed "WHY???" while crying his eyeballs out wasn't reported, unfortunately.

Huh

I'm not sure what makes less sense: Cora taking BP with a fungo bat (was he hitting golf balls? I've seen a guy hit a golf ball 500 feet with a fungo) or dumbass Z backing up into him.

Someone over as NSBB.com actually asked what a fungo bat was. If there was ever a time I wanted to point out a stereotype, that was it.

I read the Sun-Times article on it:

apparently Cora was hitting fungoes to the infield during BP (standard practice in all levels of baseball) and Zambrano got too close and his elbow got in the way of Cora's backswing.

BP is often a hectic time, with fungoes being hit to both the OF and IF from coaches positioned along the lines, and hitters in the cage taking BP at the same time.

I'm surprised more accidents like this don't happen.

Usually what you'll see is basesballs flying everywhere, guys jogging on and of the field, and general controlled chaos.

Agreed

We had a mess here in Durham in 2002 when 2 guys threw balls to Aubrey Huff at the same time during BP. He didn't see one coming and ended up with a fractured jawbone.
