Perhaps it's the vantage point from left - Murton's throw was just as far off, just to the opposite side of home.

wow
I think Hawk has a valid point about keeping the pitcher in the bullpen on the road. They get cold sitting for a long time on the bench wait for the top of the first to end, but with that said, after the first few batters Mark should have settled in. It could be that his working quickly worked against him this time.

unless Ponson is thrown in - then you've got yourself a win-win!

by winningugly on Jul 2, 2006 2:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Not really....
....I think Mark will head to StL in free agency anyway. As good a MB is, I wouldn't be adverse to trading him and getting more advanced prospects than just draft picks.

Reyes, a competent bullpen arm, and a decent prospect of some sort would about parallel the Mulder trade and would work for me.

I'm not sure now is the time to do it, since you'd hope MB would contribute more this season than Reyes would. But today doesn't help m confidence in him...

Pittsburg did take one, and almost took two, so I can't really complain too much about that.  I really wish Minny would stop winning, though.  Liriano is on the bump today, so the brooms will be out in full force up in the Twinkydome.

Remind me a lot more of last year's Sox from the give up very few runs and just score one more than the other guys. Our offense may well carry us to the playoffs, but I think we really need to get the starting pitching back to make a real push at a repeat.

I'm not usually one to say this
but AJ's AB was pretty critical that inning.  Z threw his first two pitches at 98 to AJ, but with no movement -- he wanted to blow it by him.  That messed him up until the Mackowiak AB.  Luckily Juan was able to capitalize on a first pitch right down broadway.  Biggest inning of the game right here for Buehrle.

i don't know exactly how to fill in those blanks
but I think the Angels know how valuable Shields is.  You'd have to pay a premium for him.  I don't know if the kind of guys we'd be willing to give up for him would get the job done.  Broadway and somebody?  I wouldn't want to give up Fields and the Angels don't really need hitting prospects.  I imagine they'd want pitching.

by Ryno on Jul 2, 2006 3:34 PM CDT up reply actions

They want a big bat
and I don't think that's something we can offer, other than Fields.

Fields and Broadway/Lummy for Shields I'd say, but they're looking for something more established. And shields wouldn't be dealt until the 31st just to make sure they are out of it in the AL West.

AIM: SouthSideCheat

by The Cheat on Jul 2, 2006 3:34 PM CDT up reply actions

That's a fair estimation
and I'm probably not making a Fields/Broadway for Shields trade.  Trading that much for a guy who's not even going to pitch 100 innings a year usually isn't a good thing.

Who knows, maybe Hermy can have a medical miracle and give us a month or two of his 2005 self. :dream

by CWSKeith on Jul 2, 2006 3:39 PM CDT up reply actions

I know, I'm probably dreaming
Plus, besides the Koch/Foulke trade, it's usually not Kenny's MO to grab a high profile reliever.  He grabs relievers 'under the radar', ala Marte, Cotts, Jenks, Shingo, and to a lesser extent, Hermy and Politte.

I think I speak for all White Sox fans when I thank you for your amazing contribution to our team last year. This year, however, please go away.

politte should be at 22 IP, 21 runs allowed

Funny
It was the Cubs fan next to her that actually caught the ball off the bounce. He handed it to her right away.

by twoeightnine on Jul 2, 2006 3:45 PM CDT up reply actions

With this offense and bullpen
Ozzie has to have a shorter leash with the starters so we can keep it closer. And never send Politte out there again.

by Gangstalicious on Jul 2, 2006 3:45 PM CDT reply actions

if riske had come in right after the error
and cliff had stayed away from the field, this would have been a sure win

not that it won't be!

I know the rules don't call for it...
but shouldn't whoever ends it for the Cubs get a save even if they're up by 5 or 6? Just on account of their being the cubs?
A mancrush on Crede??? Nah.

yeah, mark takes this one
(I'm not saying it's over yet either) but reserve a little blame for Ozzie for this one...I hope he learns a little something from this one...like when to pull a struggling pitcher

He won't change in that regard
Leaving the starters in is Ozzie's most steadfast managerial technique.

have to hit out another granni,

eh no sweat

by Hangwoofem on Jul 2, 2006 3:54 PM CDT reply actions

WTF
Game over cause Politte is still in.

by Gangstalicious on Jul 2, 2006 3:55 PM CDT reply actions

It sucks
because I actually like Politte.  He seems like a good team guy.  He just doesn't have anything.

by the wolf on Jul 2, 2006 3:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah
I most certainly feel bad for Cliff, and he seems like a nice guy, but if you don't have it you don't have it.

by Gangstalicious on Jul 2, 2006 3:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Break their hearts twice?
Bases loaded, one out for the Bucs.

Strikeout, and a groundout.  Ugh.  Ugh.  Ugh.

by CWSKeith on Jul 2, 2006 3:56 PM CDT reply actions

And we now see...
why the bucs are the worst team in baseball.
Bases juiced, 1 out, down by 1 and they lose on a strikeout and groundout to pitcher.
Sidenote, Ozzie will never learn about taking a pitcher out.  He lives and dies by the sword, get used to it.
GO SOX!

by rhythm on Jul 2, 2006 3:57 PM CDT reply actions

Looking at the boxscore...
Angel Pagan, two hits.  Ronny Cedeno, two hits.  Juan Pierre, two hits.

Scratch, three hits for Pagan.  Bye, Cliff.

by CWSKeith on Jul 2, 2006 4:00 PM CDT reply actions

And there we go
I still won't write this team off, but we are just gift-wrapping this one.

by Gangstalicious on Jul 2, 2006 4:01 PM CDT reply actions

It's pointless now
But why leave Politte there in to embarrass himself?

by the wolf on Jul 2, 2006 4:02 PM CDT reply actions

Chuck Norris will come out
and give us a 5-run homer

by Hangwoofem on Jul 2, 2006 4:04 PM CDT reply actions

WTF
  1. Why is Politte in to start the inning?
  2. Why is Politte still on the team?

I'm in disbelief
Ozzie see Pagan light Cliff up last inning and leaves him in to get lit up again.  I blame ozzie as much as cliff.
GO SOX!

oops
that was supposed to be Ozzie SAW Cliff get lit up

Sigh
11 Runs and no W, thanks for ruining my Sunday MArk and Cliff.

by Gangstalicious on Jul 2, 2006 4:17 PM CDT reply actions

Seems like
Sometimes Ozzie is just satisfied to win 2 of 3 and goes out of his way not to use up the bullpen.  This was a winnable ballgem despite the start.

by the wolf on Jul 2, 2006 4:18 PM CDT reply actions

you can't use up your bullpen
for every potentially winnable cause. heck, with this team, anytime is a potential winner. it's a judgment call. we've got a tough stretch coming up and, the way our next two starters have been pitching, i'd say our pen is going to get a workout.

by larry on Jul 2, 2006 4:26 PM CDT up reply actions

I know
And that's why I'm conflicted about being too critical of Ozzie in these situations.  He seems to have a good handle on the "long view," ie, keeping players fresh, not wearing out the bullpen, getting players' confidence up, etc.

by the wolf on Jul 2, 2006 5:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, I was surprised it was as close as it was...
with the poor pitching performance by buehrle and 2 errors.  Hopefully the Sox play some better ball now that they're playing the AL again.
GO SOX!

by rhythm on Jul 2, 2006 4:18 PM CDT reply actions

Horsebleep game
any time you give up double digits to the Flubs/anyone.  I apprciate the comment about us and the 2005 Red Sox being mashers with questionable pitching.  Seems Coop has done a great job with relievers this year (except our favorite, Cliffie) and now needs to spend a little time with starters (ala Count yesterday throwing on the side with glowing progress).  Not comfortable with stating staff.  Hopefully the 2nd 1/2 will bring good things.
