We need offense--and less of a distraction from Ozzie

Last year was easy street for Ozzie when it came to managing the pitching staff...this year they've been ok, but by default rate a 'poor' after last year's spectacular performance.  I think out of the freefall they are on now, what shows the most is Ozzie's poor job of handling the pitchers, he's like LaRussa, always taking the pitcher in question out of the game 1 or 2 batters too late.  Last night was a perfect example--everyone and their brother knows that Vasquez is tough as nails for about 5 or 6 innings, then he hits a wall.  I blame Ozzie more than Vasquez for his recent struggles--you need to have a very watchful eye when it comes to him around the 6th inning, and Ozzie has failed to take him out all year around that point in the game--Vasquez has nice stuff, but let's remember, he's our number 5 starter, not a numer 1 or even a number 2, he needs to be handled in an appropriate fashion.  That is on Ozzie, he's loyal to a fault with his guys.  Then, he berates his best pitcher in Garland on Sunday after he threw 2 pitches behind the back of a Ranger hitter in retaliation--it was like the 3rd or 4th inning, and the Sox suck right now, yet he totally tears into his guy in the dugout between innings for everyone to see--what, you want your best pitcher to get run in the 3rd inning when you desparately need a win?  That's poor managing to me, Ozzie has been a sideshow distraction more than anything this season, he should take a look in the mirror and get back on board if he wants his team to perform up to their ability.  This year the pitching has still been good enough for the Sox to win with the lineup they run out there (giving up 3-5 runs a game this year, the Sox should still win most of those games with that lineup).  For how much the focus has been on the pitching being so bad (overstated), it's really been the lack of clutch hitting that is sinking this club--we've had a TON of runners left out on base lately, especially guys in scoring position with less than 2 outs.  With that in mind, I say go after Soriano hard and strengthen our hitting--the guy is a perennial all-star, world champion and clutch hitter supreme, what is Kenny waiting for?  We all love McCarthy, but hey, are we going to turn away an all-star, world champion that could help spark the team to save our long relief 'specialist' out of the bullpen?  C'mon Sox fans...if you said after last year that we could trade out Rowand and McCarthy and replace them with Thome and Soriano--who would say no to that?  Bottom line is this team needs something to shake them out of this freefall--it's still July but it sure feels a lot like mid August '05 right now...GO SOX!  peace, Mike
