Around SBN: Two Minutes Of Thunder Basketball Wins The Game

White Sox vs. Devil Rays -- Garcia vs. Fossum

Freddy Garcia (12-8, 4.99) vs. Casey Fossum (6-5, 4.91)

The Irresistible Force vs. Immovable Object

  • The Devil Rays are 1-20 in their last 21 road games. Their last road series win was in June against he Phillies, who, as we all know, play in the NL, so that shouldn't even count.
  • Big Game Freddy hasn't considered the D-Rays a big game since 2002, posting an 0-2 record with a 5.87 ERA in his five starts since he deemed the Rays unworthy of his effort. He was 6-0 with a 2.72 ERA in his first 9 starts against the flat sharks.

By the way I voted 6+ runs needed for Freddie but I think we can do it against the dreaded Casey Fossum

Yeah, but how is he when it's pouring?
Think this rain will pass in time or are we looking at a delay/rainout?

The "rain" isn't going anywhere
though I would hardly call it rain. I've seen harder sprays in the produce section of Dominik's.

unless it clears up real soon
you'll probably see at least a short delay (30 min or so). they usually do that just as a precaution/give players enough time to warm-up/let the field dry some.

Maybe
if somebody was able to photoshop a Cheech Marin mustache onto Freddy, he'd make the Rays go Up in Smoke.

I think JD would have to obviously carry the Sox to the playoffs to beat out east coast media golden boys like Jeter and Papi (although Boston's fade and Papi's absence should close the case on his candidacy).  He'd have to have a few more walk-offs or monster games on a big stage to the point where his performance simply couldn't be ignored.

But the way he's going, I think that's entirely possible.

Any computer techs out there?
I don't know why, but my MLB.tv today, for whatever reason, isn't working.

I type in my username and password, and the game comes on, but it freezes, and then plays again for a second or two, and then keep on freezing.

I tried calling mlb.com, and I got two different answers.  One was that I needed to download the latest Flash player, and second that my internet connection was too slow.

Here's my problem with those answers -- I've been using MLB.tv perfectly fine for the past week with ZERO problems.  So, why now?  And, how can I check how fast my internet is going?  Because I'm able to surf the internet without any 'slow-downs'.

Any help?  If I kept talking to the people at mlb.com, I would've said something I was going to regret.

Patience!
Lots of mood swings to go.  But the next few weeks should be interesting.

The Cubs game just ended on WGN.  The Cubs blew a 4-0 lead in Pittsburgh, then went up 6-5 in the top of the 11th.  In the bottom of the inning they got what should have been a game-ending double-play ball, but the second basemen couldn't catch the throw from the shortstop and the tying run scored.  After intentionally walking Chris Duffy to load the bases, Ryan Dempster then walked in the winning run.

Cubtacular.

the same trainwreck over and over again.  He fucking blows

by koolmo3 on Aug 29, 2006 9:46 PM CDT reply actions

Sure, he sucks now
but he's been pretty solid most of the year, is left-handed and he's young.

I have no problem giving him some garbage time and it was nice to see that he was hanging in there before he hung one to Cantu.  Don't like the leadoff walk though.

This talk about DFAing Cotts needs to stop.  Take some ludes or something, perhaps have a refreshing beverage or seven, and relax.  If this shit happens in the last week of the season, however, I'll be joining you on that ledge (in full WS '05 gear).

GO SOX!

Hey, sometimes guys just lose it
Isn't always a physical reason.  Kind of like Steve Blass or the golfer (Ian what's-his'name-announcer, who got the yips and never got his game back).  So much of the game is confidence, eh?  And I have lost mine for Neal.

by winningugly on Aug 29, 2006 9:48 PM CDT reply actions

Could PODS be playing better because.....
Ross Gload was on the Score today talking about taking fly ball practice in preparation for some outfield duty...is this a good idea or is OZZIE high?

by rhythm on Aug 29, 2006 9:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Woah there...
Ozzie has made some bad decisions as of late, but these guys are major league pitchers.  Ozzie put in exactly who he should have, maybe taken Riske out a batter earlier, but still I don't see how this is Ozzie's fault.

by CatBrains on Aug 29, 2006 10:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed
You ought to be able to bring in a Little League pitcher with a 6 run lead and 2 innings to go and reasonably expect to close out he game - especially against the Rays at home.  WTF are Riske/Cotts doing on the rster, then, if you can't bring them in for THAT kind of mop-up (a mop-up win)?

by winningugly on Aug 29, 2006 10:03 PM CDT up reply actions

just a little frustrated seeing the same performance from Cotts every time.  Most in close game situations.

by koolmo3 on Aug 29, 2006 10:05 PM CDT up reply actions

No bullpen moves.....
because rosters expand on friday and we'l be able to bring up Hermie, Tracey, Montero, Logan and anyone else we want. But that last playoff bullpen spot is now officially open for competition!

by bhoov on Aug 29, 2006 10:03 PM CDT reply actions

Hermy will be up for sure
on Friday, but you've got to get Boone up here before the deadline, or at least put a pitcher on the DL so you can slip him through the K-Rod loophole.

Perez
I might try and catch lightning in a bottle with him by calling him up here in September.  Why the heck not?

Him, along with Tracey and Logan should be called up.  I think Logan and Perez might be able to help a little bit in some higher leverage innings, while I only want Tracey up here incase there's a blowout.

by CWSKeith on Aug 29, 2006 10:06 PM CDT reply actions

The thing about....
Perez is that he's 23 and sort of emerged from nowhere.  I don't think they will screw him up by bringing him in.  Worth the gamble....

by winningugly on Aug 29, 2006 10:19 PM CDT up reply actions

I think the A's are kidding themselves
if they think they can resign him. There are three teams in their own division who will outbid them for his services next season.

The only way I see him sticking with the A's is if they foolishly put a 4-year deal on the table. Frank has said that he wants to play until he's '42', which would require a 4-year contract.

Nobody's going to give him that contract length guaranteed.

Apparently it was
Or at least according to the A's radio announcers.

Apparently he gave the 3rd base coach the "you gotta be kidding me" look.  Chavez double (3 bag variety) bounced off the wall away from Youkalis so it wasn't such a crazy move.  Dude must have been gassed though.  Oh yeah, screw the red sux.

Cotts and Riske are a bad combo.
Riske has played poorly of late in big games, but Cotts ERA for August is about 10.00 I believe.

by southsidefan on Aug 29, 2006 10:22 PM CDT reply actions

Addendum: Cotts ERA = 11.57 for August.
What do you do with him now?

by southsidefan on Aug 29, 2006 11:20 PM CDT up reply actions

He's on the Politte Express
I hate to give up on a guy who was previously effective, but the Sox are not in a position to keep experimenting with Cotts with anything less than a double-digit lead.  I don't think they have to give up on him entirely but it may be time to let him exorcise his demons and think about returning next season.  Boone Logan (or whoever) can't possibly be worse than he's been in the past month or so.

by the wolf on Aug 30, 2006 12:56 PM CDT up reply actions

seems pretty simple
unless he's hurt, get coop to figure out what's wrong with him. i've seen plenty of relievers go through bad stretches just like this. if it's not an injury, it's usually a pretty simple mechanical fix.
