Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Baseball America-Top 10 Prospects by League

Not terribly pleasant reading for Sox fans.  They list top 20 per league.

International League: Charlotte

  1. Ryan Sweeney
  2. Josh Fields
  3. Charlie Haeger
1-4 are Delmon Young, Lastings Milledge, Jeremy Sowers and Tom Gorzellany.

Southern League: Birmingham

  1. Tyler Lumsden (or not)
  2. Lance Broadway
9th is Anibal Sanchez, so you know it's a good league again for having just 10 teams.

Carolina League: Winston-Salem
Nobody.  In an 8 team league that they claim to be mediocre.

South Atlantic League: Kannapolis
Nobody.  16-team league, and Kannapolis sure did suck.

Appy League: Bristol
16. Justin Edwards

Pioneer League: Great Falls
14. Chris Carter

Cunningham
seems to be the only glaring omission.

And a glaring omission it is.
Consider that Cunningham ranked 5th in the sally league in OPS and that he was the youngest player in the top 10 in OPS. In fact the top 10 in the league were 1 21 y.o., 2 22 y.o., and 6 24 and older players. Cunningham was 20 y.o. It'll be interesting to see where he falls in their top 20.

wow, just realized he didn't even make the top 20.
amazing. Based on the above you could make an argument that he's the best hitter who played the whole year in the sally league. And he's not one of the top 20? Any ideas why? Does he not look good in jeans or something?

I will check over my issue tomorrow
It's entirely possible I missed Cunningham.  I'll report back.

Nope
No Cunningham in the Sally League Top 20.  To be fair, it's a 16 team league with a lot of young, high ceiling prospects like McCutchen, Tabata and Fernando Martinez.  Nasty Twins pitching prospect Brandon Erbe is only #9.  Waubonsie Valley's Michael Bowden, who was 19 during the season, a supplemental 1st round pick in 2005 and will likely be a top-3 Red Sox prospect with 118/31 K/BB in 107.2 IP only ended up #15 in the league.  He'd be the best White Sox pitching prospect by miles.

The Sally League also has a stupid schedule where many teams don't play each other while others play each other all of the time.  It's possible that the scouts and coaches that were willing to talk were not those who saw Kannapolis enough to make a fair judgement (or perhaps they did see him and didn't like him.)  The White Sox are generally worthless at providing information, which is why Phil Rogers has to do the team top 10/30 every year.

Cunningham
If you look at the list, IMO it's not a glaring omission. I've read that Cunningham is defensively challenged. And, to be honest, he's not metaphorically in the same league as propsects like McCutchen and Tabata.

Erbe is an Orioles prospect -- and thank goodness, cause it's not like the Twins need more pitchers.

Whoops
my bad on Erbe.  Have the damn Twins on my mind.

From Matt Meyers
Q:       Scott from Springfield, Illinois asks:
I can see why the Kannapolis Intimidators had such a poor season, did any of their prospects even come close to the Top 20 or even Top 30?

A:      Matt Meyers: Aaron Cunningham was far and away the best prospect on the team and fits in the 21-30 range. He gets the barrel of the bat through the zone well and can use the whole field. His fringy arm will likely limit him to left field, but his range is above-average there.
