Baseball America's Sox Top 30

From the very brand new 2007 Prospect Handbook.  It went to print just before the Danks deal.  I think Jim Callis said he would put Danks 3rd, although this is really Phil Rogers' list.  The many disadvantages of having a guy like Rogers without a specific eye for prospects are somewhat tempered by his good relationship with the club.  I would guess what you see here is more an idea of who the Sox intend to push, rather than who is actually expected to do better in a vacuum.

  1. Ryan Sweeney
  2. Josh Fields
  3. Gio Gonzalez
  4. Lance Broadway
  5. Kyle McCulloch
  6. Charlie Haeger
  7. Aaron Cunningham
  8. Adam Russell
  9. Lucas Harrell
  10. Matt Long
  11. Chris Carter
  12. Heath Phillips
  13. Jerry Owens
  14. Ray Liotta
  15. Oneli Perez
  16. Jack Egbert
  17. Justin Edwards
  18. Boone Logan
  19. Robert Valido

  21. John Shelby
  22. Dewon Day
  23. Chris Stewart (he gone)
  24. Anderson Gomes
  25. Francisco Hernandez
  26. Sean Tracey (good lord have the Sox buried this guy, Ozzie is such a prick)
  27. Brian Omogrosso
  28. Paulo Orlando
  29. Wes Whisler
  30. Ricardo Nanita
Notable unranked players:
Casey Rogowski, Chris Getz, Andy Gonzalez, Carlos Vasquez (from the Cotts deal)

Montero is entering his age 30 season
and I'm not sure he's even in the Sox organization after they dropped him off the 40 man.  He's no prospect.

i believe
he's still with charlotte; of course, he's pretty much worthless.

Is
the handbook already out at places like Border's...bookstores? Do you already have a copy?

by dantesox on Jan 16, 2007 7:13 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Not yet
I'd imagine it's still at least a week away from the bookstores.  I'm never sure on how the books get there but I know the large shipments leave for the BA offices and to the large distributors like Simon & Schuster at the same time.  So while the middle man distributor slows down the process some for the bookstores, those who order from BA directly get it really fast.

I have a real strong connection to the business/non-editorial side of BA (sadly not the fun stuff), but I was able to snag myself a copy when they arrived today.  The book is no different than usual, but I've got to say, I think the cover is ugly.

A more interesting list
Though many are no longer "prospects" a 25-and-younger (on opening day) list gives you a better idea of the long term health of the organization.

Here's my (very quick) list.

  1. John Danks
  2. Ryan Sweeney
  3. Brian Anderson
  4. Josh Fields
  5. Gio Gonzalez
  6. Lance Broadway
  7. Andy Sisco
  8. Gavin Floyd
  9. Nick Masset
  10. Charlie Haeger
  11. Kyle McCulloch
  12. Aaron Cunningham
  13. David Aardsma
  14. Boone Logan
  15. Heath Phillips
  16. Lucas Harrell
  17. Jack Egbert
  18. Adam Russel
  19. Oneli Perez
  20. Chris Carter
  21. Pedro Lopez
  22. Matt Long
  23. Brian Omogrosso
  24. John Shelby
  25. Justin Edwards
  26. Chris Getz
  27. Jacob Rasner
  28. Jason Rice
  29. Andy Gonzalez
  30. Justin Cassel
Others: Clayton Richard, Carlos Vasquez, Donny Lucy, Wes Whisler, Ray Liotta, Robert Valido, Francisco Hernandez, Paulo Orlando, Salvador Sanchez, Anderson Gomes,

You'll notice that my entire 10 ten should start at AAA or higher. That's both good and bad. What strength we do have in the minors is located very close to the top of the system. The bottom is quite baren.

Forgot this part
We are ranked as the #26 team in prospect talent.  The Cubs are 18th.
Twins are 8th, Tribe 10th, Royals 11th and Tiggers 14th.  Rays are 1st.

I do like the idea of lists involving <25 age guys.  Seems more valuable and useful than just rookies, although I think the real reason these books and lists exist is to sell to fantasy players and collectors, not fans interested in the full organization.

A bottom 5 minor league system...
That's just sad. I really hope the Sox change their drafting somehow. The last few drafts really seem to have been brutal. If they are serious about having a big budget, I think emulating the BoSox and Yankees  by going after players with signability issues would be a smart move. Maybe they feel burned by Borchard, but I think paying the big signing bonus is generally a worthwhile gamble. Especially if the Sox don't want to pour money into free agents, they should have the resources and motivation to do this.

Here's hoping that some proposects in A ball have a breakout season. It's happened in other orgnizations (Jaime Garcia with StL), maybe it can happen to some Sox minor leaguers.

Some of the banners were shown off Tuesday, including those featuring Pres. Barack Obama both before and after his election.
