Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

Additions to the 40 (and one subtraction)

[whitesox.com]:

The Chicago White Sox have designated outfielder Scott Podsednik for assignment and have purchased the contracts of catcher Cole Armstrong and right-handed pitchers Jack Egbert, Lucas Harrell and Adam Russell. ... With the moves, the White Sox 40-man roster is at 40.

It is defintely time to bid a fond farewell to Pods ... appreciate his efforts on the 2005 team but his value to the team is now null. He brings little that Jerry Owens doesn't offer: low OBP, no power, speed to burn - and Owens is cheaper.

Egbert and Russell were to be expected. Both should see time in the major leagues in 2008 with Egbert starting and Russell in the pen.

Harrell and Armstrong surprise me and I'm not sure they will survive the roster turnover that should continue with more trades. I really thought they would add Fernando Hernandez instead of Harrell and they may now lose Hernandez via the rule V draft.

The subtraction was good and necessary. The additions of Egbert and Russell were also. I am puzzled and a bit dismayed by the addition of Harrell or Armstrong over Fernando Hernandez.

So ...
if we're letting Pods go for nothing now, why didn't Kenny get anything from the Cubs for him last year?

I know it makes sense...
from a numbers perspective to give him up, but there are 2 other ways to look at it.
  1. Fans.  Obviously there are still fans who see him as the "cutie" who hit a walk-off in the home-run and have no clue what OPS even is.  Those fans, already upset by a horribly disappointing season, need to be placated to some degree, even if in small increments.  Or in this case, not pissed off further.
  2. Potential Free Agents.  From what I have seen and read, Kenny and Ozzie have created an environment that makes players happy.  If the Sox were to unceremoniously dump Pods while taking nothing in return, effectively embarassing him publicly, it could be a move that makes current Sox players a little ticked, but more importantly, it could hurt their status among potential free agents.  While nobody is going to 2-3 mil less a year just because they think Sox management are nice guys, I think the Sox treatment of players has put them in good position to land someone given similar offers.
Are these 2 factors worth 800k in payroll?  Who knows?  But it is something to consider before damning the move.

All that being said, I think it was a mistake to keep him last year and I am glad the Sox aren't wasting money on Pods any longer.

I never heard of anybody on this blog touting him as anything special.  Anyway Rule 5 isn't what it use to be.  For the most part teams see it as a waist of time. I don't thing we'll loose him, unless he throws in the mid 90's.   I'm sure he'll be protected in the AAA phase of the draft

carlos vasquez, donny lucy, alex cintron, andy gonzalez

why are these clowns there and not FH?

dammit...

by The Wizard on Nov 20, 2007 4:55 PM CST up reply actions

here it is
to remove a player from the 40, they need to be DFAed. all those players you mentioned would be claimed on waivers. we can argue about whether that's a bad thing but losing one of those players is a far surer thing than some team claiming a player like hernandez and putting them on their active roster for the whole year.

by larry on Nov 20, 2007 5:14 PM CST up reply actions

seriously?
you'd take carlos vasquez over fernando hernandez?

by The Wizard on Nov 20, 2007 5:20 PM CST up reply actions

who is taking anyone?
i couldn't care less between them. i just know i'm not releasing vasquez. if you want to complain, complain about armstrong - i realize there's a dearth of catchers out there but i highly doubt anyone would pick him. don't complain about the guys already on the 40.

by larry on Nov 20, 2007 5:33 PM CST up reply actions

aren't you afraid though
that if someone takes them and leaves them on their roster for the entire season, this will harm their development?

by The Wizard on Nov 20, 2007 7:21 PM CST up reply actions

huh?
again, if he's on someone else's team, i don't care. that's what your question asked. i'm not seeing how it's silly to not care about the development of someone else's players.

by The Wizard on Nov 20, 2007 7:53 PM CST up reply actions

then ask a question that relates to that
i'm a lawyer. i don't generally answer questions that aren't asked. for example, don't ask me if i have the time if you want to know what time it is. or, don't ask me whether i care about the development of a player after they've left our team if you want to know whether i care about their development when they are on our team.

I did
here's the question I asked: aren't you afraid though that if someone takes them and leaves them on their roster for the entire season, this will harm their development?

when I wrote "if someone takes them," the "them" is white sox players

the thread is about fernando hernandez, if I wanted to talk about players in other teams I'd have qualify it

the guy is on our team at this moment, if someone picks him up, puts him on his mlb roster, and screws his development, then this is a lost opportunity for our team

he can become a valuable piece of our bullpen but not if we allow someone to pick him and destroy his development

by The Wizard on Nov 20, 2007 8:54 PM CST up reply actions

i'm not going to parse your words again
what you think you asked and what you did ask are two different things.

i'm having a real hard time figuring out the ruckus over what amounts to who should be the 37th or 38th man on the 40 man roster (assuming we all agree that gonzalez and cintron will be gone soon) of a rather thin team. tempest in a teapot.

Andy Gonzalez should be released.

Andy Gonzalez in 2007 had an OPS+ of 39 in 215 Plate Appearances based on a BA of .185, an OBP of .280 and a SLG % of .249.

The White Sox have many players they are not protecting that could do that in 2008.

Why is he being protected?

by Jim in Maine on Nov 20, 2007 7:32 PM CST up reply actions

who says they're protecting him?
i see 40 men on the 40 man roster. and i see a GM intent on signing at least one free agent before the draft is going to be held. fine, we dump gonzalez today and add hernandez. who are we dropping when we sign, say, torii hunter next monday? fine, cintron. then who do we drop if we sign another free agent? i personally like roster flexibility while also keeping as many players as possible.

at some point, you have to make a decision. again, if you want to complain, complain about the obvious player who did not need to be added: armstrong.

Hunter to decide his future after holiday...
"Seven-time Gold Glove winner impressed by Cabrera trade"
But speaking to MLB.com on Tuesday afternoon, Hunter said his free agent thought process will pick up steam on the day following the holiday. But if Hunter and the White Sox were close to reaching a multi-year deal by the end of this week, as reported by the Sun-Times on Monday, then Hunter certainly wasn't tipping his hand to such an outcome.

"Not by the end of this week. I know that for a fact," said Hunter on Tuesday, when asked for a timetable of when he may sign a new lucrative deal. "It could be the end of next week, and it's not necessarily with the White Sox.

"I'm actually trying to weigh my options and think about a couple of other things," Hunter added.

Hunter didn't want to go into specifics of the deals being offered or the teams making offers, but he did admit that five teams had made contact. Ever the diplomat, Hunter said all five teams were in the running.

by SSH2005 on Nov 20, 2007 6:08 PM CST reply actions

re
Along with joining a team which is looking for a chance for immediate success, Hunter lists the need to find a good fit for his family as an overriding factor. Hunter can break down the teams all he wants, from top to bottom, and wants to find a place where he's comfortable.

If his family loves the city, Hunter admitted, then that's where he probably would end up going.

"My family has to like the city. My little boy has to like the city," Hunter said. "It's all family for me.

hopefully this give the rangers (since his home is in texas) an advantage

by The Wizard on Nov 20, 2007 6:18 PM CST up reply actions

Yet, Hunter seemed truly impressed by the addition of shortstop Orlando Cabrera made by the White Sox on Monday. According to the seven-time Gold Glove winner, he will start breaking down the options by Tuesday and think about what he wants to do.

"After the holiday, I'm going full speed ahead, 100 miles per hour," Hunter said.

As for the problems endured in Chicago by Jacque Jones and LaTroy Hawkins, Hunter's friends and one-time teammates in Minnesota, those past issues won't remotely factor into his final decision.

"Two reasons: I'm a different person than those guys, and my game is different than those guys," Hunter said. "And I'm not with the Cubs. It's the White Sox. That's totally different."

Harrell
is a bit of a hidden prospect. We were big fans back in June of '06. At the end of June last year, he had a hit rate not unlike DLS this season. He had an ERA under two and an incredible GB/FB ratio. I think he was hurt then, because his final few starts in W-S were not dominating like his first 3 months, and he was all over the place in his few AA starts.

I was disappointed not to see him pitch at any level this year. He said he was scheduled to go to one of the rookie leagues, but he never left complex ball.

I suppose him being put on the 40-man is a good sign about his recovery. Still, I wouldn't expect any team to put a claim on a guy who hasn't pitched well in 18 months.

Even though I really like(d) Harrell as a prospect, I almost would have rather him been left unprotected instead of Fernando, about whom I know nothing. I've seen one pitch -- a pitching motion really -- from Hernandez. It was riding low-90's fastball, not unlike the lone pitch I've seen from the Japanese reliever to whom the Sox have been connected.

Harrell would seem to be more likely to slip through the cracks by avoiding any real baseball action, whereas Hernandez was sent to the scout laden AFL.

How about two acquisitions?
Hunter and yet another Cabrera (not named Miguel)?

The Sun-Times' Gordon Wittenmyer wrote:

At least five teams have made offers to Hunter. According to baseball sources, all are for five years, with the exception of the Rangers' six-year offer, and the teams include the Los Angeles Dodgers, who are expected to go after Hunter very aggressively if their trade talks with Florida for third baseman Miguel Cabrera break down.

And the New York Yankees, who are shopping center fielder Melky Cabrera for pitching, could become a formidable sixth suitor if they can trade him by early next week.

I would give up some of our young pitching for Melky but I'm sure the Yankees would ask for Gio.  It's too bad because he would look nice in LF and leading off for us.  Adding Torii and Melky would definitely finalize our lineup.  Trade Crede and Uribe for relievers and as a salary dump and we are left with...

LF  Melky Cabrera
SS  Orlando Cabrera
DH  Jim Thome
1B  Paul Konerko
RF  Jermaine Dye
CF  Torii Hunter
3B  Josh Fields
C   A.J. Pierzynski
2B  Danny Richar

I should probably put my Xbox controller down.  ; )

Anyways, it seems like the White Sox are only offering a 5-year contract.  I don't see why Hunter would turn down a 6-year deal from the Rangers to come to the White Sox.

yank$ inquire about jenks
sia:
According to a Yankees official, who asked not to be identified because he is not directly involved in the decision, the Yankees have inquired about Chicago White Sox closer Bobby Jenks to set up Rivera.

Jenks had a strong season (2.77 ERA, 40 saves in 46 chances and a record-tying streak of 41 consecutive batters retired), but a deal is considered a long shot. The Yankees' best hope is that the White Sox fail to sign free-agent centerfielder Torii Hunter and thus ask the Yankees for Melky Cabrera or Johnny Damon in a trade.

It's in my mind that it could happen, although I'm still a litle hazy on where.  The Yankees might make sense, but they'd have to give the Sox more than just Johnny Damon -- I'd say Johnny Damon and Ian Kennedy, but that ain't happening as if Kennedy wouldn't be dealt in a package for Miggy Cabrera, he certainly isn't going for Paul Konerko.  I can't come up with another 'win now' piece that the yankees could send us.

Maybe the Dodgers?  That only makes sense if Colletti folds to the pressure of certain players and media members, wanting to go with more veteran goodness over Loney.

Came accross this little nugget from Olney today:
After managing in the Red Sox farm system for a year, outfielder Gabe Kapler will resume his playing career in 2008. He will probably work out for teams sometime in early to mid-December, to demonstrate his readiness, and already about six teams have indicated interest, in an offseason in which the market on corner outfielders is very thin.

He's an interesting name. This might be a huge stretch, but he does fit the Kenny Williams "scraping the bottom of the barrel" mold.

real big...145 pounds? I like them athletic, certainly.

Personally...
I prefer women who don't look like men.

give her a few years
you'll affectionately call her plumpers.

by larry on Nov 21, 2007 3:18 PM CST up reply actions

I can't say for sure,
but I bet larry likes the Eastern European, Praguian ectomorph "boyish" look in his chick.  Kinda unisex.  Think Natalie Portman - beautiful until naked, then - "Ack - where are your hips/breasts/ass cheeks?"
2010 - the waiting is the hardest part.

She still looks fugly to me...
I'm not even talking about her body, Larry.  Her face is unattractive to me.

and i didn't even get into
how some men simply aren't fans of asians. like me. variety is the spice of life. there's something out there for everyone. and i guarantee california jon is way too cool and unflappable to give a shit what anyone thinks about his women.

by larry on Nov 21, 2007 2:43 PM CST up reply actions

I am personally not big on Asians...
but there are some hot Asians out there.  In my opinion, she is not one of them.

Well
to each his own. But definitely count me in on athletic 5'6" 145 pounders with flat stomachs as opposed to 5'9" 110 skinny runway types.

by bhoov on Nov 21, 2007 4:00 PM CST up reply actions

I for one always liked the
Katarina Witt type, meself.  Now, I am married to larry's type - 5'5", 105 lbs.  But I'd take Katie.

Jenny Finch is OK for a softball player, too.

I had no idea she was
a softball player.  I just remember seeing her in the stands during the 2005 playoffs and thinking that she was attractive.

Comments are Way off base
You guys have gotten way off base with your comments.  All this talk about Garland's girlfriend when you could be talking about Pods' wife.  And for that matter, all his groin injuries.

in news that slipped through the cracks
free agent jason bourgeois - who seems to be a cause celebre on this site recently - signed a minor league contract with the sox. i'm not quite as high as some on him but he certainly could provide at least what andy gonzalez did and, in my opinion, should make alex cintron totally expendable, if he wasn't already.

Great move by Kenny...
Utility player Jason Bourgeois, who batted .311 in 84 games at Triple-A Charlotte and stole 38 bases with the Knights and Double-A Birmingham, signed a minor-league contract.

Dump.Cintron.now.

that makes fernando hernandez being left off the roster even worse...

by The Wizard on Nov 21, 2007 1:09 PM CST up reply actions

wiz
you're acting like these roster moves are being made in a vacuum where the only consideration is protecting players for the rule 5 draft. there's more going on in the world of white sox baseball than that over the next few weeks. free agents? trades? hell, maybe the sox will want to claim someone in the draft, too. even if cintron was dumped, adding another player in his place would probably be a pretty dumb move because it limits kenny's ability to get deals done. we need - at the very least - two readily available spots on the 40 man (i'd say gonzalez and cintron fit this bill but others may disagree) for signing a CF and for making another roster move, whether it be by trade or signing. heck, i think the sox are actually hurting themselves by not having even more spots available right now (i'm looking at you, cole armstrong).

by larry on Nov 21, 2007 1:17 PM CST up reply actions

ok, this sounds logical
does someone like hernandez have to be protected from this point on constantly?

by The Wizard on Nov 21, 2007 1:39 PM CST up reply actions

well, sort of
not sure i'm getting your question but if a player is removed from the 40, he has to go through waivers. and if you think this is a guy that other teams would want in rule 5, then there would be no question that other teams would put in a waiver claim for him.

Rotoworld's comments on Jason Bourgeois...
White Sox re-signed second baseman-outfielder Jason Bourgeois to a minor league contract.
Bourgeois, who turns 26 in January, looked like one of the better minor league free agents out there after hitting .306/.365/.440 between Double- and Triple-A last season. Whether he gets a chance to make the White Sox next spring could depend on what happens with Pablo Ozuna.

And Happy Thanksgiving ...
You bet I do ... with the way he produced last regular season (and, mind you, our bull pen did not) as well as in the fall he should definitely be on 40 man roster.

Jasyon Stark: Reds shopping Freel & Hamilton
Link:
The Reds are so convinced that minor league player of the year Jay Bruce could be ready for the big leagues by June, they're actively marketing outfielders to clear space. Don't figure on Junior Griffey or Adam Dunn changing zip codes. But the Reds are aggressively dropping Ryan Freel's name. And maybe most surprisingly, they've told other teams Josh Hamilton is also available in the right deal. "It really makes you wonder about his health," said an official of one team that spoke with them, "and whether all that time he missed took more of a toll than we thought."

If they are shopping Josh Hamilton, Kenny should be all over it.  The Reds would want pitching for him.  Hell, even Ryan Freel would look nice in LF over our current option Jerry Owens.

by SSH2005 on Nov 21, 2007 12:55 PM CST reply actions

June?!?
Bruce had better be ready before June to hit Bill James' projection of 143 games and 535 at-bats, let alone 41 doubles and 36 bombs.
He not busy being born is busy dying.

more yank$-jenks
[NJ Star-Ledger]:
But after shaky Kyle Farnsworth, bullpen experience is limited; Edwar Ramirez, Ross Ohlendorf, Chris Britton and Brian Bruney are candidates, and Eiland mentioned Matt DeSalvo, Jeff Karstens and Steven White as minor-league starters who could push for a relief spot. The Yankees will make a run at Chicago White Sox closer Bobby Jenks, have interest in re-signing Luis Vizcaino and have been tied to free agents Ron Mahay and Scott Linebrink. "There's some holes to fill," Eiland said.

will make a run? as offer Johnny Damon? pass...

by The Wizard on Nov 21, 2007 1:02 PM CST reply actions

What would make
the NJ Star-Ledger believe Jenks is available? I can't see the Sox downgrading an already shaky pen and opening a gaping hole with the loss of our closer, especially if we're competing in 2008. No substance to 'run' at Jenks.

by HulkSmash on Nov 21, 2007 1:30 PM CST up reply actions

Worthless rumors...
On the Yankee boards include stuff like Damon and Horne for Jenks or Melky Cabrera straight-up for Jenks.

My guess -- the writer just picked a team that won't contend in 2008 with a good closer and mentioned Jenks as a trade target (because 90 loss teams don't need closers). He doesn't realize that KW is living in a different world in which the Sox are contenders. And rainbows are everywhere.

Cabrera seems happier in his new hat.  (And yes, I realize that the hats were digitally imposed on their heads).
