Miguel Cabrera

After missing out on Hunter, and signing Scott Linbrink to a terrible four year deal, Kenny better not be even close to being done.  I hope he goes hard after Miguel Cabrera.  What do you guys think it will take to land him over the Angles, Dodgers, and Giants?  (Fields, Gonzalez, Broadway, Sweeney, etc.)  And if it takes a pakage of these players would you guys still do it or do you think we would be better off holding on to our youngsters?

After the Sox satisfy Florida's trade demands for
Cabrera, the team that would remain would be worse than the team they have now. So, what's the point ?

If I were Fla., I wouldn't even want what the Sox could offer. They could get much better talent from either LA team.

In other words "not gonna happen". Another KW pipe dream.

You don't think
that Fields, Sweeney, and Gonzalez could get it done.  Cabrera is one of the best hitters in the game and he is only 24.  I would love to see a left side of the inflield of Orlando and Miguel Cabrera.  I know giving up gio would hurt now that we traded garland, but I don't think the marlins are going to want any pitcher besides him or DLS.

I would also like to see him at 3rd base but....
for some reason the Sox have said that they would play him in LF if they acquired him. I think that lessens his value to the Sox.

And, no I don't think Fla. would accept Fields, Sweeney and Gio in a trade because none of those guys are likely to be close to the player Cabrera is.

My guess is the Sox would probably have to add Danks  or more.

The value of Cabrera is not his defense...
it's obviously his bat.  He's a fat bastard right now.  Until he gets in shape, I don't think he adds much defensive value at 3B.

Big Hole in LF
Just get his bat in the lineup.  Whether it is Crede or Fields at 3B, you are better off offensively with him LF.

by CWS05WS on Nov 27, 2007 12:13 PM CST reply actions

And to get Miguel Cabrera...
Fields is definitely gone and Crede is at 3B.

by SSH2005 on Nov 27, 2007 12:27 PM CST up reply actions

I'm thinking Miguel will cost...
Fields, Danks, and another prospect (maybe not Gio, but someone possibly lower in the system)

Would it be worth it?

Uhm... I dunno? Depends on what we can get out of our rotation. That's what's going to take the biggest hit because we don't have many good position players left other than Fields. Sweeney? Doubt that he would be anything other than a throw in.

Firstly, Cabrera will get in shape.
He's already said so and whatever team he goes to, like Ozzie, will command it.

Secondly, if the Sox are going for all the marbles this year and they trade thir future for Cabrera (Fields), then they are counting on Crede's health to hold up all year long at third base and also are prepared to lose him for nothing at the end of the year ?

Sounds pretty dumb to me. They should forget Cabrera. They need so much more. In 2005, if they would have signed Maggs, they never would have made the playoffs.

What's the hurry?
Cabrera, unless he can pitch, too, isn't going to make the Sox a sure-fire playoff team within two years.

I'd rather wait for him to become a free agent, then go after him hard there.  It'll cost them the same amount of money without costing them talent, and they'll be in a better position to pay him.

Much too logical
Didn't you get the memo, Kenny is in win now mode ;)

Personally, I think you bring up a good point and would love to see the White Sox follow that plan. I'm not a fan of the Linebrink signing because of losing a draft pick, thought they should have protected Hernandez (?), and don't want to them sign a type A free agent CF.

But what the hell do the Sox care about what I think? Ugh, I have a feeling things are going to get a lot worse before they get better...and hope that I just reverse jinxed the whole situation.

If you think the White Sox will win the bid
for Miguel Cabrera... then someone must've spiked your kool-aid.

I don't.
But there's going to be a bidding war for Cabrera's services after the '09 season whether he's on the Sox or not, so why waste the talent in acquiring him when he's not going to be the difference-maker in the short term, and the long-term chances are the same?

by Sox Machine on Nov 28, 2007 1:11 AM CST up reply actions

I see your point...
unless the Sox could resign him to an extension so he doesn't hit FA. I don't even want to imagine what that contract will look like.

Probably like 6/140. Yikes.

2008 Team
I think Crede will be the opening day 3rd baseman. He will either go down with a bad back again or get traded before the deadline. No team will take him in the offseason, b/c he is unknown due to his injury, has one year left, and has Boras as an agent.

That makes Josh Fields LF. He will take over 3rd when Crede is injured/traded.

CF will be Owens, until his slow start kills him. Then it will be Sweeney or Andersen and the position becomes a revolving door for the remainder of the season. Ozzie second favorite of the day will take LF after Fields takes over 3B.

2B will have Richar as the OD starter, but will soon regress into a revolving door as well with Uribe and Ozuna pitching in.

2008 Sox will be fighting with the Royals for last place again.

Thing is...
That's frighteningly realistc.
