Where the sox are at right now

with the roster we have today are a 3rd place team in the AL central behind cleveland and detroit. i do see detriot having a down year on account of half their team having career years at old ages (polanco, magglio, renteria).

our batting lineup as of now

CF- Owens - speedy leadoff hitter with no power- ozzies ideal leadoff guy
SS- Cabrera- one of the better 2 hitters in the league, should be a major upgrade to our offense as we added someone who makes contact
DH- Thome- we should see what weve seen so far from thome as a white sox, one stretch during the season where he rakes n actually carries the team unlike Hawk's imaginary uribe
1B- Konerko- should be  good for 30-90 to 35-110 depending on what happens at leadoff
RF- Dye - if healthy 35-120 is possible if not see  2006
3B- Fields- 40 homers a definate possibility but im more interested in whether he can cut his k-rate(which over a full season would have been the major league record) n be more patient at the plate
LF-Carlos Quentin- dont know much about him. looks like we might finally have someone who can get on base though and if he hits for power n average weve got ourselves a carlos lee with defense
C- AJ - will continue to call games n get under the other teams skin, enough from the catcher position + 10-15 hrs n 50-65 rbi
2B- Richar- tough to call could be anywhere from a  .220 BA to .300. a really hit or miss prospect that has the talent to become one of the AL's elite at his position. also makes some exciting plays at 2b

as for the pitching staff

  1. buehrle - staff ace, has to pitch like a cy young candidate for the sox to contend with the current roster
  2. vazquez - should continue to improve as he gets more comfortable in chicago. knows how to use his good stuff to get outs and our only strikout pitcher last year in the rotation
  3. contreras- complete head case, could be 16 loss pitcher or 16 win pitcher
  4. danks- i see a great improvment coming from danks as he was learning new pitches n getting used to a new environment all at the same time. with a more developed cutter n change he could start to live up to expectations as the key piece in the mccarthy trade
  5. gonzalez- i think he will make the rotation out of spring training after dominating the minors at the AA level leading all minor league pitchers in strikeouts in ALL levels. said to have one of the best curveballs in the minors should be able to produce a more than serviceable era at the 5th starter spot.
long relief- charlie haeger - have him pitch here and earn some trade value, plus had some success in this spot last year
middle relief- oneli perez, ehren wasserman, boone logan, matt thornton, mike macdougal
setup man- linebrink - should be the steady bridge the sox have been looking for to get to jenks. he cost us a lot and needs to produce
closer - jenks - one of the best closers in the game and knows how to pitch and not just throw anymore. i dont see another closer id rather have besides maybe paplebon

this team should be able to get about 80-85 wins and we all know that the roster will only improve and probably soon considering the winter meetings are under way now. like i said with quentin added we have a more solid lineup with a guy who can get on base.

id like to hear some feedback on what you guys think

All I can say is......
good luck man. But you may want to remember there is a pitcher called Gavin on the team.

well
that looks about right for where we are right now. probably a bit below .500 team. but i don't think we'd need an 8 man bullpen. and, yeah, gavin floyd will be on the team in some role.

by larry on Dec 2, 2007 10:44 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

damn i knew i was forgetting somone
i dont know about floyd.. he didnt look like he was anything special when he pitched. the other worry i have about this team is will the sox be willing to let their young hurlers throw enough innings because this bullpen is definately not ready to take over games in the 7th for our 4-5 starters every time around

I was gonna comment on the 8 man bull pen...
but I was beaten to the punch.  Haeger and Gio imo break camp in triple-A with Floyd in the number 5 spot.

I really think the most critical issue pitching wise this year will be Danks' progression.  Can he be a number 4?

I think you're predictions of
Dye, Fields, and Konerko are little high.

I sure hope Crede returns healthy and can have another 2006-like year.

I think our team will continue to produce the runs... I just hope to God that our 3-5 hitters don't go into slumps like they did last year. If Thome gets hurt again (as you know he will) then Dye and Konerko will have to step it up... and I dunno if they can carry that kinda load anymore.

If Dye and Konerko play like 2006, 2005 then we will have an outstanding chance to get to the playoffs regardless of our staff. But I don't see that happening, personally.

Nice job overall although I believe that Floyd
will open in the 5th spot. Gio, either traded, or opens in Charlotte. We don't know how the bullpen will pan out yet as there will be a number of deals coming down but it sure would be nice to have a 6-man pen but I doubt it with this starting rotation.

Anyway, if KW doesn't sign some FA's there's no way that he can acquire enough talent through trade to compete for the division title this year even if he emptied the farm.

Yeah, right now this is a .500 team, which in the AL  Central is good but maybe only good enough for 4th place. I think the pitching will be the key this year. If the rotation stays the same, there's no way they win with this bullpen - even if they add a LFer and CFer.

This bullpen and the rotation, right now, are about average and they would need one hell of an offense to make up for that.

Why do people think this is a .500 team?
I know I'm arbitrarily pessimistic by nature, but this team looks worse on paper to me than last year's team.

The starting pitching is significantly worse: Garland  is gone, and I don't think Vazquez or Buehrle will be as good as last year (they were really good last year), and I'd be surprised if Danks improved (he got worse rather than better last season). The bullpen might be better just because it's hard to be worse. The offense I would guess would be about the same given some improvement at SS (although Cabrera is unlikely to replicate his 2007) and LF and age diminishing the performance of others.

Anyway, at best, this team is about as good as last year and they were not a .500 team.

I realize this is not the team that will start  season; it's certainly possible for KW to build an over .500 team still. I'm just saying that right now this looks like a bad team.

Yep - I said before the wheeling-
and-dealing (Cabrera!  Linebrink!) they would win 70 games in '08.  Revision based upon the new information (Cabrera!  Linebrink!) is 75 wins.  Tops.

If we sign Jones/Rowand and/or significantly upgrade one of the outfield corners I'll raise my expecations - otherwise, another '07 is in the making.

It's not a .500 team.....
in the NL, it would be a division winner with about 90 wins.

i put in carlos quentin
i figure hes a pretty decent upgrade over a sweeney or brian anderson offensively

Erstad would be an upgrade
over BA and Sweeney.  Not a fabulous compliment, there.

ugh???
Really?  You really think that Erstad is (was) an upgrade over BA or Sweeney?

I think at worse, it is a push...but of course there is added value to having a young guy playing over a veteran.

Go Badgers!

Was - look at the numbers
and save the excuses.  Both of the kids could've played themselves into a ML slot - instead, ended up in the minors.  And I'm no Erstad fan.  Just making a point - NO ONE was any good last year, and any warm body can't be much worse.

no
BA out-OPSed ER on the O side and as far as the D side goes there's no need to say anything

and you don't want me to go to numbers with BA's first two months removed...
