Ready to negotiate
The Cuban Alexei Ramirez submitted their documents to the office of the commissioner GL
ORLANDO - In the coming days, the Cuban defector Alexei Ramirez will be in a position to listen to offers from major league teams and his agent think you might get a better contract to which he signed his compatriot Kendry Morales three years ago.
Ramirez, jonronero the leader of the Cuban baseball last season, decided to leave his country and set up residency in the Dominican Republic to try to jump to the major leagues.
"Alexei already received their residence in Santo Domingo and subjected all the necessary documentation to the office of the commissioner of Major League Baseball, who now must declare free agent so that it can begin to negotiate with the clubs," said agent Jaime Torres to ESPNdeportes.com .
"We sent all the papers to the commissioner on October 25. Our experience in these cases tells us that between this and next week will receive approval to start negotiating formally," added Torres.
Ramirez, 26, hit .332 with 87 homers and 391 RBIs in seven seasons with Pinar del Rio in the Cuban ball. Promedió .335 with 68 RBIs and led the circuit with 20 quadrangular last season.
Ramirez can play several positions inside the box and in the gardens, but in the campocorto where he feels more comfortable.
"Some of the Major League teams that have seen train differ on where it would be better. Some want to play in the campocorto, others in center field, but there are some who prefer to have that arm in the garden right," said Torres .
Torres predicted that Ramirez is ready to play in the Major Leagues in 2008 and that any team will sign with a major league contract and with the assurance that at least host a place in the spring workouts.
Ramirez, who hit .375 in the World Baseball Classic, where Cuba remained in second place, is the most impressive player position that the selection of Cuban deserta since Morales did in 2004.
Morales, a inicialista and ambidiextro hitter, signed a six-year contract for nearly $ 10 million with the Los Angeles Angels after establishing resdidencia in Santo Domingo. The player received $ 3 million in signing bonus.
"I think Alexei has more value because Morales is ready to play," said Torres. "A more appropriate comparison for Ramirez, would match with the Japanese position players who signed as free agents in recent times."
The Japanese offensive players who have signed as free agents in Major League Baseball are the gardener Hideki Matsui (three years for $ 21 million with the Yankees in 2003), intermedista Kaz Matsui (three years for $ 21 million with the Mets in 2003) and The antesalista Akinori Iwamura (three years for $ 7.7 million with Tampa Bay in 2006).
The legendary gardener Ichiro Suzuki came to Seattle Mariners through the postal system, which requires the joint Major League Baseball to pay compensation to Japanese clubs for the rights to talk to their players who are not yet free agents.
"Alexei is a pelotero tested, which came out in the World Classic successful in clashes with Bartolo Colon and Daisuke Matsuzaka, among other good pitchers in Major League," added Torres.

I've had the Clemente biography on my coffee table for over a year and can't get past the opening 3 chapters. Maranis'historical documentation is, to me in this instance, excruciating. And I loved Clemente as a player, so I have been predisposed to wanting to read it.

Erstad finally realizes it too...
"It's tough, but I haven't been healthy. How could a team rely on me for an every-day role? I can't stay healthy," Erstad said. "It's not something that is easy, but it's really the natural progression of anybody's career. You're not as valuable as you used to be. I'm a realist. I accept that."

interesting find
But I don't remember KW being "ripped off with such consistency by Oakland GM/doctoral candidate in agronomy Billy Beane that some pundits wondered if he was covertly working for the A's."
The Foulke for Koch/Cotts trade was (Fungible Alert!), and Durham for Adkins was, but they were about 4 months apart. I just don't remember any other ripoffs.

Here are all...
Dec. 7, 2000 - Chad Bradford for Miguel Olivo
Jul. 25, 2002 - Ray Durham (+ cash) for Jon Adkins
Dec. 3, 2002 - Keith Foulke, Mark L. Johnson, Joe Valentine, (+ cash) for Billy Koch, Neal Cotts, and Daylon Holt.
And that's it. The White Sox and A's have not made a trade in five years, as far as I can tell.

Looking back at that...
In hindsight, the Sox would have been better off holding onto Durham, offering him arb, and taking the draft pick(s), but at the time, the intel was that draft pick compensation would be going away when the new CBA was signed that winter, so Williams thought he should take what he could get. In the event, he was proven wrong.

its typical bad sports journalism
Beane had his stinkers, just like everyone. He traded Bonderman for a year of Ted Lilly.
Plus, this isn't a trade, but he let Dye walk after paying him $30M for 3 poor-to-average seasons. Then KW pays $9M for 2 very good years.

Of course then he goes on to say that he's now returning to the Beane foil level GM. Which I don't think is true. And in general the article is pretty useless, just pointing out that he clearly states that KW got better.

Keith Law duplicity
Jake(Waukegan, IL): Is Darin Erstad the "perfect" fit for the Rays? Some people seem to believe so.
Keith Law: (1:07 PM ET ) Yeesh. Only if they had a desperate need for a player who's hurt 90% of the time and can't hit a lick when he's on the field. Do they need one of those? I guess they do in the sense that they don't already have one
his chat from 12/27/2007:
JKGaucho: (DC): Keith, now the Astros are real contenders! Isn't it great to have Ed Wade back in the game?
Keith Law: (1:02 PM ET ) The Erstad signing was too good to be true. I thought it was a hoax at first. If he stays healthy through March, isn't there at least a 50/50 shot he takes over the CF job on Opening Day?

Well...
I suppose it's possible to do worse than Erstad, if he's healthy.

It probably helps that he's
Not sure why KW/OG want to turn role players (think Mack, too) into starters and feature them. But DE and Mack are but 2 examples of square peg/round hole placement.

Even though the Astros signed GrindErstad...
Villarreal gets a $250,000 signing bonus, $1 million in 2008 and $1.6 million in 2009. The option, which doesn't include a buyout, is worth $2 million. Signing middle relievers already under control to multiyear deals tends to be a poor strategy, but there's not much wrong with this one. If Villarreal turns out to be a bust, the Astros are only on the hook for an extra $1.5 million. Had he posted a sub-4.00 ERA in 2008, it might have taken something like $9 million for three years to re-sign him.
