White Sox sign veteran Perez

If you're like me, you screamed "Oh no, not Timo!" in your head when you saw that headline.  Luckily, it's not everyone's favorite clutch-hitting trilingual 5th outfielder.

From ChicagoSports.com:

In an effort to fortify their offense against left-handed pitching, the White Sox signed first baseman/designated hitter Eduardo Perez to a minor league contract Monday.

Perez, 37, has played over parts of 13 major league seasons, slugging 79 home runs. He batted .253 with nine home runs and 33 RBIs in 80 games with Cleveland and Seattle last season. He hit all nine of his homers against left-handers last season.

He hit a bomb
off Buehrle in game one of last year, IIRC. That's usually enough for the Sox to want to sign a guy.

free talent
and maybe someone who can fill the role Ross Gload had last year -- though I'd be happier if he somehow made a few starts in LF as well.

13 years?
I saw his career stats in the Trib.  How has this guy lasted 13 years in the majors, does he have grainy video of Bud Selig in a Cuban brothel?

13 years...
...is so misleading when you consider he's never had more than 330 plate appearances in a season.

IIRC
he plays pretty good defense at at least four positions (or, he did before age caught up). very useful bench player. i'm guessing he's also one of those guys who finds ways to make himself indispensable to a team - mentoring young players, setting an example, good clubhouse guy, etc.

Good Clubhouse Guy
It's usually only the scrappy, fiery, good glove/no stick white guy who can suck this bad and collect a paycheck this long - look how quick Chris Singleton was done.  Pods should be inspired (or take up photography).

Christ!
I just realized we're stockpiling these kinds of guys - forgot about friggin Erstad.  WTF!?!  Who's next, Eddie Stanky?

perez has got the pedigree. and baseball has changed.

Sure...
but Perez is still a year older than Thome and he probably can't play much outfield these days.  I love Perez as our DH versus lefties but if he can't still play LF (or if Ozzie simply won't play him there), he wasn't all that great of a pickup.  If Perez can't play LF, the only LF option we have versus lefties is Pablo "The Butcher of LF" Ozuna.
