Comparing team performance to salary.

Here's a very interesting and quite cool little Java applet that compares each MLB team's performance to their total player salary.

Sure would like to see the Sox rise up out of the red and into the blue. Interesting to note that the Cleveland Indians have the best "wins:dollars spent" ratio. Detroit's isn't so bad either. But look at the chart to see for yourself, this paragraph is just filler to meet the 300 character minimum.

The White Sox' payroll...
...is not $108 million, it's more like 100 million. I assume that Mr. Fry is not including the Phillies portion of Thome's salary, nor the Yankees and Diamondbacks portion of Vazquez' salary.

If that were included, the chart would look slightly different. The Diamondbacks would be much less efficient in the dollars per win measurement because they're still paying tens of millions in back salaries yearly from the earlier part of this decade, not to mention still paying Russ Ortiz $8 million dollars a year. Further, teams like the Yankees and the Red Sox that are subsidizing lots of players traded to other teams would also lose efficiency.

If this more accurate--but also far more time consuming--method were used to make this chart, I'd say that Texas, Boston, the Yankees, the Diamondbacks, the Blue Jays, the Phillies, the Rockies and the Braves would moderately lose efficiency, while teams like the White Sox, who often pick up contracts from other teams with a discount attached, like Jose Contreras from the Yankees, would slightly gain in efficiency.

So, all in all, it's an interesting graphical representation of salary efficiency that could stand to be more accurate.

Thome's not costing us...
14.8 million, and Vazquez isn't costing 12.5 million.

Heading over to Cot's baseball contracts

Well, Cot's isn't being specific, but estimates that the White Sox are paying Thome about 7 million this season, and Vazquez about 10 million. So that alone knocks the value down to a little below 100 million for a total payroll.

These things do add up. We're talking around 9% of the total payroll. That's not really going to make the graphic that inaccurate, but when you can be more accurate, why not be?

Ah, I see you used Cot's as well...
Look at the individual player comments. The Phillies sent $22 million along with Thome, and the D-Backs sent $5 million along with Vazquez.
