Brian Anderson...
just connected for his first minor-league homer of the year.  He's raised his average to .333.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on May 6, 2007 2:11 PM CDT reply actions

BA
just needed regular at bats to get him going, I think he would have done a lot better this year had he been given a chance.

by omnipotent grab on May 6, 2007 2:16 PM CDT up reply actions

But as we all know,
This kid, he had his chance last year.

Roger Clemens, Dick #1.
Ozzie, Dick #2.

Clemens to join Yankees.
Yay, the AL needed to get tougher, after all.
It takes two to lie; one to lie and one to listen.

by Toonderstrook on May 6, 2007 2:25 PM CDT reply actions

Wow, already?
Do they really need him now that Wang's throwing perfect games (through seven)?

by defensive indifference on May 6, 2007 2:33 PM CDT up reply actions

What a dick!
I'm not sure if I'm going to play.

I really don't want to play.

I'm 90% sure I'm not going to play.

OK,..................................I'LL PLAY.

by ballyb on May 6, 2007 2:36 PM CDT up reply actions

So, Bartolo Colon...
is supposed to be good still?  Or BETTER, even?  Hmmm...

by defensive indifference on May 6, 2007 3:02 PM CDT reply actions

Yesterday was obviously an aberation!
Fire Greg Walker or someone. Shake things up!

by ballyb on May 6, 2007 3:36 PM CDT reply actions

Nice one, Sweeney.
He looks scared as shit at the plate but at the same time you can tell he knows what he's doing.

by defensive indifference on May 6, 2007 3:48 PM CDT reply actions

Why does Gustavo not bunt here?
He can't hit for shit, runner on 2nd with no outs, and he's swinging away?

by chrome on May 6, 2007 3:48 PM CDT reply actions

The other teams in this division
are very, very strong.

Best case scenario for Sox is Thome back in a few weeks, Podsednik in 4 weeks or so. The team we're fielding just flat out stinks. Can't hit, can't execute.

It's VERY PAINFUL to watch.

by ballyb on May 6, 2007 3:57 PM CDT reply actions

I hope...
Podsednik never comes back.

Sweeney is better.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on May 6, 2007 4:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Watch
Sweeney will play great and then Ozzie will 1st trot out Mac regularly, then when Podsednik is ready, we'll see Sweeney only as a defensive replacement.

by ballyb on May 6, 2007 4:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Add Bartolo Colon
to the Santana, Sabathia unhittables.

Why bother even playing the game when these guys pitch?

Ozzie's postgame should be incightful.

Sweeney rules.
I am thuroughly surprised.

As I type, AJ gets the RBI!!!

by defensive indifference on May 6, 2007 5:18 PM CDT reply actions

Who
in our minor league system taught Sweeney how to hit?

by ballyb on May 6, 2007 5:19 PM CDT reply actions

I bet he learned...
from reading an internet blog.  SSS, maybe?

by defensive indifference on May 6, 2007 5:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Whatever they do
keep him away from Walker!!

"The Adventures of Bobby Jenks."

Please throw strikes.

by ballyb on May 6, 2007 5:24 PM CDT reply actions

I honestly
want to use one of the other "studs" as a closer. Jenks allows too many baserunners.

by ballyb on May 6, 2007 5:32 PM CDT reply actions

Great comeback.
Sox take the series too. YES!

by wsoxfan72 on May 6, 2007 5:37 PM CDT reply actions

by defensive indifference on May 6, 2007 5:39 PM CDT reply actions

Well I certainly didn't expect them to win
this game, let alone the series.

Let's hope Paulie and JD and Crede and everyone else get it together soon, because our pitching has been getting the job done.

Greg Walker, time to dig into their diaries and find out what made them feel good in the first half of last year.

by chrome on May 6, 2007 5:49 PM CDT reply actions

Mid game
it looked ugly. Paulie and JD and Crede (and you can now add Iguchi) look bad. Crede looks awful. On to Minn.

Santana came out last night after 5. I think we might somehow see him on Thursday.

by ballyb on May 6, 2007 5:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah that's when I stopped watching
to go to the gym.  Down a couple runs, I figured the game was over.  So it was a nice surprise to come back home and see the Sox up 4-3 in the tenth, with Bobby having a decent 10th inning.

Can't hold a shattered bat single against him, and he responded with two straight K's.

by chrome on May 6, 2007 6:22 PM CDT up reply actions

After today's game
Sox at bats - 907, doubles - 36.
Sweeney AB - 16, doubles - 3.

In 1.76% of the Sox AB's, Sweeney has 8.33% of doubles.

Speed, but also a different approach at the plate. Two of the doubles were to left field.

I vote for a Sweeney promotion to player / hitting coach!

by ballyb on May 6, 2007 5:52 PM CDT reply actions

I have to apologize
for my negativity in games when we don't hit (see my posts above). I guess I'm somewhat manic depressive. This was a great win. But with hitting like we've had, at best we'll be able to stay near .500. It won't cut it in this division.

No new approaches by Crede and Konerko in particular. Crede must think this is his out year, the way he's pressing.

It would be a shame to waste the great pitching we've had and it looks like we'll be getting.

We need line drive singles!!!!!!!!!!!!
We need opposite field singles!!!!!!!!!!!!

by southsider80 on May 6, 2007 6:45 PM CDT reply actions

Sweeney
If he becomes the new LF this year, that would be huge.
Go Badgers!

by shaftr on May 6, 2007 6:54 PM CDT reply actions

Any chance
he could bat leadoff?

Weekend for Sweeney - 4 for 11, 3 runs, 3 doubles.

I don't want to put too much pressure on him, but could he lead off? We need to start scoring early in the game like in 2005. It's too hard to constantly come from behind.

by ballyb on May 6, 2007 7:07 PM CDT up reply actions

IIRC
he has led off in the minors - not that it should really matter. the most important thing is that i think he's go the sort of skills - above average speed, ability to get on base, and so on - that make a good leadoff hitter. of course, ozzie is mesmerized by your "typical" leadoff guy (you know, can't hit for power, very good speed, bunts, etc.) and ryan isn't quite in that mold. ideally, i think he should be our leadoff guy in the future. honestly, though, i don't mind that he's not doing it now because easing him in at the big league level doesn't seem a bad idea. but, later in the season, i'll probably be clamoring for such a move.

by larry on May 6, 2007 7:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Um, that might be construed
as a bit of pressure.  Let's ease him in - seems to be taking to it.

I said we'd win 2 0f 5 this weekend.  We do well against the Angels and suck against the rest of the West Coast folks, so I can't say I'm disappointed.

But I'm disappointed - Seattle sucks, and our hitting still isn't as lovely as it ought to be.  For Christ's sake (and I just went to my niece's 1st Communion yesterday in Mundelein, so I'm infused with the Holy Spirit right now) when I logged on upon returning to FL this afternoon I saw Erstad was (still) leading our starters with a scintillating .267 average, and Gooch a close (HA!) second at .229!  How in Christ's name (that Man again) are we at .500?

Neal Cotts

I wish him well. Glad to have Aardsma.

by ballyb on May 6, 2007 7:35 PM CDT reply actions

i realize this was referenced above
but clemens signed with the yankees. for $28 million.

obviously that will be prorated and he'll make "only" about $18.5 million. but, what's almost more amazing than his contract, is that the yankees will now have to pay an additional $7.5 million in luxury tax. that means the cost to them for about 20 regular season starts is $26 million. how about that for setting the market for top tier starting pitching?

by larry on May 6, 2007 7:38 PM CDT reply actions

Worth it?
We'll see.  He's a genius, though, at dragging this out and creating demand for his services, and under what circumstances and for whom he wants to provide them.

by winningugly on May 6, 2007 7:54 PM CDT up reply actions

or
about $1.3 million a start. or about $220K an inning. i'm sure people will have a field day with this stuff later in the year.

by larry on May 6, 2007 8:06 PM CDT up reply actions

He should be ready
just in time to face us June 4, 5, 6 & 7.

Funny, when he started game 1 of the '05 World Series we were riding such a high that I wasn't much worried about facing him. It turned out he was hurt. But the way we were playing, nobody really was scary.

I hope the SWAGGER returns!

by ballyb on May 6, 2007 8:28 PM CDT up reply actions

we'll see
something tells me the rocket will want to relaunch at the red sox and, specifically, on espn. if so, we'll miss him. who knows, though; it's certainly too early to tell. i honestly wouldn't mind seeing him the first time out. when he's come back, his first few starts haven't been that great. we'd definitely be able to get into that yankee bullpen.

by larry on May 6, 2007 9:16 PM CDT up reply actions

It was HOT out there today...!
...but at least I had Sox fans in front and behind.  Some real AJ haters directly in front that I loved giving shit to.  My first look at the boys this year and they. are. awful.

I hate the goddamn rally monkey.
