OT: To Play or Not to Play?

Fantasy Baseball.

Star-divide

Until 3 years ago, I shunned fantasy baseball, prefering not to dilute my loyalties and to focus on the mostly wayward fortunes of the White Sox.

Then I was suckered into a 13-team NL-only 5x5 keeper league (I live in NL-territory).  I figured I could keep my loyalties true enough, considering the limited nature of interleague play.

I renamed my team the Black Sox, inherited a bunch of hacks, the best of whom was Tomo Ohka, and started off by sucking tremendously.  Luckily, it was 2005, and who cared?  The White Sox won it all.

This year, however, the White Sox suck, and their alter-ego Black Sox are riding the backs of Brad Penny, Francisco Cordero, Jose Reyes, and Prince Fielder to a 10-point lead in the standings.  (I'm still waiting for the bottom to drop out, <knocking on wood>).

So I'm conflicted.  I dread the boxscores for another statistical demonstration of White Sox futility, but then... Reyes just stole 5 bases in 2 games.  I find myself scanning the free agent wire for possibilities to replace Ryan Freel, and wonder just how many starts to give to Wandy Rodriguez.

Meanwhile, the White Sox tumble further, and Kenny trades prospect Cunningham for some guy named Richar.  I wouldn't have done that, I think.  Hell, I'm a GM too...

So, I'm wondering how many on SSS have fantasy teams.  Are they winning?  What kind of league do you play in, and can you really root for Travis Hafner? Is this the year to say thank god for my fake team, because the real one sucks?

This is my 3rd year
of Fantasy Baseball on Yahoo! and I've always been competitive in every league I've joined (except the NCAA March Madness Brackets, and Hockey).

To date, I've been in 6 leagues (in one currently) and I have four second place trophies, and one first place trophy, while I am currently first in a 12 team mixed Head-to-Head league. So it's safe to say I dominate my group of friends in fantasy baseball :) The funny thing is, I tend to think that at least 2,3 of my yearly opponents know more about the players than I do. One buys a Baseball Prospectus prior to each year's draft and knows it front and backward, yet his team has never won.

I've always played mixed leagues, and I play either Roto or Head-to-Head.

I love it. I also do Football and Basketball, the latter of which I also tend to do well. And it's not that I don't know my Football, I just never seem to do that well. I've only won one (1) fantasy football league in my 4 years of doing it. Fantasy Baseball is a great way to keep yourself interested in sports during these long summer days outside of Football season.

Play
I can't imagine going through a season without fantasy baseball...it's just an enjoyable accompaniment to the year.  I feel it adds to my appreciation and knowledge of the game too...tracking all these different players, learning the names of upcoming prospects, etc.  It makes me pay attention to the rest of MLB.

I don't find too many conflicts with my real-life fandom.  I might not start a guy if he's going against the Sox, but that's just a judgment call I'll make the day of game.  I have no set rules for those situations.

My problem this year is that I crossed the line with number of teams.  Having to use a second yahoo ID to get into leagues #5 and #6 means you're in too many.  I think yahoo researched the topic, and set the limit at 4 leagues per ID to protect people's sanity.  I mean, I know which players I own, but I can't tell you in which specific league I own them.  I do know that I only root for Hafner in one league...

Here's where I stand currently...these are all mixed leagues:

 • H2H, non keeper, $ payout-  1/12
 • Roto, keeper (6 players)-  4/12
 • Roto, non keeper-  1/11
 • H2H, keeper (5)-  6/14
 • Points, non keeper, bragging rights-  3/15
 • H2H, dynasty (24)-  2/16
Looking like a pretty solid year for me.

I do fantasy football and basketball too, but they aren't nearly as much fun as baseball. Football is far too dependent on dumb luck (which RB's get injured and which don't) and basketball just gets tedious (although not as tedious as actually watching NBA games).  I only do a single non-keeper league in those sports.

I play
because it's another reason to pay even more attention to baseball.  I'm in a league where I end up not being able to do the live draft because of school commitments and having Yahoo draft for me, while most others draft for themselves.  I actually find that I like this better.  It's harder, because you usually end up with guys that are injury risks or way overvalued if you're in a decent league (which I am), but I get to play "Nab Every Young Guy  Ever".  I finished 3rd last year because I decided that Morneau's line drive percentage was way too high for him to keep sucking, and added Scott Olsen and Josh Johnson on top of that, in addition to having Yahoo draft Jose Reyes for me.  This year has been the year of position players, so I've got Ryan Braun, Kelly Johnson, Hunter Pence, among others and I've been picking my spots against shitty NL teams with pitchers.  I started off the season much like the White Sox, with my hitters in a huge slump, but I've been on a hot streak of late and it's been a lot of fun.

My only problem is that there's this one guy who always picks up the real stars-in-waiting before I do.  Is there a feed that lets you know when guys you're waiting for get put in the system?  He beat me to Lincecum and Gallardo this year and Hamels last year.

our league is administered by
Cbs.sportsline and I'm not aware of any tickler for prospects. I have no idea about yahoo.

Not really
but you can bookmark a page on yahoo and monitor it regularly...

Yeah, Nerd is right
You can monitor the status changes, but that doesn't always help in some leagues where managers will put in waiver claims on some others.

I used #1 waiver priority to nab Braun, I drafted Lincecum, but I wish I had nabbed Hunter Pence. Missed out on him. I think it's a little early to be discussing Gallardo, but we'll see. My pitching staff is already stacked and I don't think I'll need a Gallardo. The guy in my league who picked up Gallardo drafted Homer Bailey.

I usually monitor RotoWorld.com and Yahoo!'s expert articles to see who to keep an eye out for.

Gallardo
I don't think he'll stay up longer than the game Capuano is out, but for me he's a chance to get some low ERA wins out of the crap NL.  That's how I've scrapped together decent stats so far, then I try to let my hitters carry it.

by colintj on Jun 18, 2007 8:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He looks decent tonight...
granted it is against SF, an offense almost as bad as the White Sox.

But he and Slowey don't appear to strike out a lot of batters. Slowey's been a decent source of ERA up until his last outing.

He was a Winthrop star, you know. I never got to see him pla, however.

My team
Yahoo H2H 12-team Mixed, Non-Keeper

C - McCann
1B - Hafner (and yes, I can root for him when he's not facing the Sox)
2B - K. Johnson/Kinsler
3B - Miggy Cabrera
SS - Orlando Cabrera
OF - Abreu, Matsui, Willits
DL - Baldelli

SP - Lackey, Zambrano (it hurts to have to root for the Cubs every 5 games, but at least their games don't affect the Sox), Dice K, Oliver Perez, Gorzelanny, Bartolo, Gallardo
RP - Hoffman, Jones, Capps, Accardo
DL - B. Myers (the 'B' stands for 'Beatmywife')

Very nice...
my team looks kinda similar. I can see how you could be competing. I share Zambrano, Accardo, and Matsui.

Btw, how can you play Hafner at 1B? Do you not have a util spot?

My current 1st place team in a 12-team H2H mixed league:

C: Johjima
1B: Fielder
2B: Utley
3B: Atkins/Braun
SS: Jeter
OF: Matsui/Rios/Teahen
Util: Adrian Gonzalez
Bench: Aaron Hill

SP: Zambrano, Hill, Haren, Snell, Bonser, Lincecum, Garland, Francis
RP: Rivera, Accardo, Reyes

I traded Andruw Jones before Opening Day for Zambrano, so I've been riding the roller coaster all season as well. Thankfully they figured out he can't throw to Barrett anymore.

Hafner
...he's started 5+ games @ 1B this year, and thus has been granted 1B eligibility in yahoo leagues.

Has he? Man...
I wish he had played a little bit last year when I could've used him at 1B.

Oh, forgot to add
Ryan Braun.  He's my usual everyday Util, unless Miggy Cabs has an off day, then I throw Braun into 3B and put either Johnson or Kinsler as my Util.

I haven't had Zambrano all season...
Traded David Wright for him about a month ago when they were both struggling.  Lopsided trade, I know, but with Hafner not 1B eligible at the time and Miggy Cabs on my team, I have no room for Wright.  Plus, I needed SP bad.

The day that Hafner was 1B eligible I traded Helton for Dice K.  I don't know how I pulled that one off, but it made up for the lopsided trade of Wright for Zambrano... and Zambrano is awesome now.

has anyone read

Good read-- what would you do if you had a coupla hundred grand to invest in winning your fantasy league...

My team
C: Johjima
1B: Young D
2B: Roberts B
3B: Cabrera M
SS: Renteria E
OF: Lee C/Sheff/Guerrero
Util:Willingham J
Bench: Kotchman C

SP: Schilling, Haren, Harang, Buerhle, Carmona, and Mitre
RP: Embree, Sherrill, Smith, and Guerrier

I'm in a Yahoo Rotisserie League (12 teams) where point totals are based on 16 different stat categories (8 offensive/8 pitching).  I heard head to head leagues are much more enjoyable.  The team I have is hovering between 2nd and 3rd but nowhere near the team in 1st.  Most of the pitching (with exception to Haren, Schilling, and Harang) I picked off waivers.

My one complaint about my fantasy league is that I receive some crazy ass trade proposals from motherfuckers trying to fleece me.

I'm following my team more closely this year since the sox season is basically over (IMO).

Yeah, looks like you went hitting all the way
until around the 10th round, like I did.

I drafted hitters, and one pitcher (BJ Ryan), until the 9th round when I took Haren.

I like that approach much more than taking chances on pitchers so early like my compatriots did. One of my buds took Carpenter 2nd overall, then Halladay, followed by Bondermann, Rivera, and somewhere in his first 10 choices, Mussina and Rogers. I think his first hitter was Torii Hunter. He'd lost 6 weeks in a row until recently, so I think it goes to show you can wait on decent pitching like we did. His team had absolutely no power.

Course I was stacked at hitting from drafting high average power hitters in the first 10 rounds, and managed to trade Andruw Jones for Zambrano, and am now finally reaping the benefits.

"God knows I gave my best in baseball at all times and no man on earth can truthfully judge me otherwise."

Actually I started drafting pitching early
In the 6th round with Papelbon, and followed by Harang, Willis, and Haren.  Very early in the season I traded Papelbon and Willis for Renteria, which was an equitable trade at the time.

KJ has worked out well considering I originally drafted Piazza.  I also picked up Kotchman and Willingham off waivers too.

I forgot to add that my team name is Madvillians, in honor of the hip-hop duo that make up madvillian.  Btw, does Madvillian on SSS still frequent this site?

I get the same shitty offers.
Some guy offered me BRAD HAWPE for Zambrano a few days ago (and this was after Zambrano's past two amazing starts).  Needless to say, I laughed at him.
