Buehrle deal is dead

White Sox' refusal to add no-trade clause kills 4-year, $56 million proposal, says Joe Cowley:

According to a source outside the organization but familiar with the situation, talks between Buehrle and the Sox broke down because the club would not put a no-trade clause into a proposed four-year, $56 million deal. The source also told the Sun-Times that general manager Ken Williams wasted no time taking phone calls from both the New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers about a possible trade involving the left-handed starter. Whitesox.com says the same: A source close to the situation confirmed to MLB.com that the negotiations between the two sides have stalled over the issue of a no-trade clause in the deal, which was reported to be a four-year pact in the range of $56 million. The money or amount of years no longer appear to be an obstacle, but the no-trade clause apparently is a deal-breaker for both sides.

That would have been quite a bargain...
But I trust the Sox. I think they know what they're doing here.

I'd have signed Buehrle to that contract in a second, though.

disgusting
Of course Buehrle wants a now trade clause, he's signing for below market value, and without the no-trade clause the sox could trade him and then he'd be making less money for a team he does not want to play for. If the sox do not sign him this team will be srewed just like the cubs were for about a decade after they let Maddux go.

Time for a clean sweep
New ownership. New GM. New manager.

No, I'm not joking. Reinsdorf is the spiritual heir to the Old Roman.

Blech.

Stretch!

I need more details
I am sure the Sox are willing to give some type of limited no trade. I assume if things were to get really really bad (extended) they want a way out and Buehrle at that price even limited brings a haul.

To Buehrle's point however if he is willing to forgo 5 years because he loves it here, he probably wants it iron clad.

I see both points which is BAD for the prospects of it changing. Too bad.

Bruce Levine is reporting
that the deal isn't dead yet.

Also, the incredibly frustrating thing about the Sox balking at the no-trade clause is that by the 3rd year of the deal, Buehrle will be a 5-and-10 guy and have a no-trade clause anyway, so the no-trade they're refusing is only for 2008-09.  Why are you even signing him if you're that worried you might need to dump him in the next 2 years?

I don't get it.

Good point
I'd gather that 2009 year is the biggest. Our we players at that point in the division or not?

I just read
the debate on the other thread about Buehrle's service time.  Levine has said it multiple times as though it's an ironclad fact, so take that for what it's worth.

ROFL, this story is ridiculous...
Last week, George Offman on WSCR 670 was saying the deal would happen soon and Bruce Levine on ESPN 1000 was saying that there was no deal imminent.

I'm just hoping that this will be all over soon...
one way or another.  I'm getting sick of all the speculation.

I wish it was July 31st today.
