I read something interesting today...
in Baseball Prospectus 2007.

I'd never thought of this before, but as far as wins above replacement goes, the good bat/average glove player is always more valuable than the poor bat/great glove player.

Meaning, even though Uribe is great defensively, he only get's a few balls hit to him every game, and a good portion of those are routine plays that any competent fielder makes. However, he comes up to bat 4-5 times a game. His impact at the plate is much greater than his impact in the field.

"God knows I gave my best in baseball at all times and no man on earth can truthfully judge me otherwise."

by Shoeless In SC on Jun 5, 2007 7:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep.
And that's why it's becoming more and more apparent Uribe will not have his option picked up....when our offense was above average, we could carry him...now, well, you know the story....it's not so much him as the whole of the team.

by dantesox on Jun 5, 2007 8:00 PM CDT up reply actions

I've written several times on this board.....
something to the effect that Juan is one of our biggest holes.  Love the glove, but in a lineup with several boppers (in theory) you need an OBP guy, not Juan.

by stanchar on Jun 5, 2007 8:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Unfortunately...
shortstops with good OBPs are worth their weight in gold.  There are only a small handful out there.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Jun 5, 2007 8:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Juanny's OBP is awful
Last year it was .290. That's lower than a lot of SS's batting averages. It's .281 now.

I was looking at the BB/K ratios, and the Hits.

No, 3 runs in 7 1/2 isn't bad, but to move up to the next level he needs to be dominant.

How many former Royals closer candidates
will KW blow through this year...and Hawk and DJ hyperventilating about Jeter's bunt is priceless

by chukar on Jun 5, 2007 9:11 PM CDT up reply actions

This game blows
We've got Buehrle going against some rookie, then we have the rookie on the ropes a bunch of times and do absolute jack shit.

KW is doing a lot of talking, but IMO he's completely handcuffed by this crap team.  He can't make a trade because he's got no bullets, and they can't release or bench anyone because the minor league replacements suck.

The only thing he and Ozzie can do is the same thing we do - bitch and moan.  And it has just the same impact as us bitching - nada.

by ChicagoPete on Jun 5, 2007 9:09 PM CDT reply actions

Agreed.
I think it'll get a lot worse before it gets better.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Jun 5, 2007 9:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Who can you trade?
You can't move a starting pitcher cause then the season goes completely in the toilet.

Iguchi? - FA, won't bring anything
JD? - same
Konerko? - expensive, showing his age, won't bring anything in return
AJ - nope, no other catcher
Crede - nope, crippled
Podstad - crippled and they suck
Uribe? - you might get Neifi Perez for him

Thome - expensive and old, might be the only trading chip of value.  But if you move him this pathetic offense can only get worse, as if that's possible.

What a mess.

by ChicagoPete on Jun 5, 2007 9:20 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd go ahead...
and move Buehrle and take the consequences of that, but I doubt that Ken Williams will.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Jun 5, 2007 9:21 PM CDT up reply actions

You can't trade MB
Apathy is bad enough as it is.  Look at this blog - a Monday night KC game in April had 350 comments, and yesterday a Yankee game in June barely had 100.

You move Buehrle, and the pitchforks and torches will come out.

by ChicagoPete on Jun 5, 2007 9:27 PM CDT up reply actions

I think...
the pitchforks and torches are going to come out anyway, when the team finishes with a losing season.

Williams needs to suck it up and realise that 2007 is over.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Jun 5, 2007 9:34 PM CDT up reply actions

I think
Hawk and DJ subscribe to the school of thought that if you can't say something nice about someone, don't say anything at all. As Chukar notes above, they were stroking themselves about Jeter's bunt, Matsui, etc.  It's almost like they're incapable of saying anything bad about anyone - the courtesy extends beyond Sox players.

by Shoeless In SC on Jun 5, 2007 9:26 PM CDT reply actions

This has been a long time coming
The scouts have finally caught up to Greg's offense, and he hasnt made a change.  Remember it used to be a bad pitcher using low and away, throwing a slider in the dirt that would 3 hit us.  Then a few other pitchers took that approach.  Now watch, every single pitcher goes low and away on us.  Greg hasnt figure out that up the middle and the other way is how you make them re-establish the inside pitch you can drive.

Now THAT I'd like to see. I might get a plane ticket, fly to Chicago, buy a ticket, just to see Owens bat cleanup.

How many pitches up and out of the zone can you swing at?  Surprise surprise, a pitch up near the brim of your helmet you popped up behind the plate.

The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly.
Our 2-8 hitters are 9-23. That's the good.

Our 1 and 9 hitters are 0-7. That's the bad.

The ugly? Uribe's foul tip to end a potential rally.

you can certainly criticize the lack of position players in our system. and you can criticize the starters in our system if you want. but it's getting pretty ridiculous when you criticise the relievers. i don't know many teams who stockpile 9 or 10 deep in friggin' relievers. they're failed starters. i'm glad we don't have more of them in our system.

Ah, right.
The ol' "you can't criticize because you're not a major leaguer" argument.  How I love that one.  Hundreds of games watched?  Reams of analysis read?  Exacting statistical models studied?  All totally worthless.

If you want to have an opinion regarding relief-pitcher usage, buddy, you better have been one of the 0.1% of humanity who was born with the reflexes, coordination, and muscle to make a 25-man roster.

And discussing lineup cards?  Trades?  Defensive arrangements?  Look, I understand that it looks like Joe Crede isn't hitting particularly well.  And you might be able to point to hoity-toity "statistics" that might suggest you're on the mark.  But listen, buddy.  If you yourself can't hit an 88-mph slider down and away, then how could you possibly tell whether or not Joe Crede can?

In fact, I think this entire forum is off the mark.  Here we're all sitting around, discussing baseball, happy as you please, and yet we aren't professional baseball players!  The nerve of it.

Jerry and Kenny
Aren't going to fire themselves.  The manager (or coaches) is (are) usually the fall guy(s) when a team is dramatically underperforming.  Particularly when the team has performed well in the past.  It's true of any organization - managers are evaluated based on the performance of their team.  Why should baseball be any different?  Oh, wait....
"Looks like the joke's on us, doesn't it?"

by Happy Felsch on Jun 5, 2007 10:38 PM CDT up reply actions

well, it should be different
the question is whether the players are still "responding" to ozzie. if this is a shitty team, fine. the bullpen you can't blame ozzie - or really even coop - for. seems like they just got stuck with bad/inexperienced/overwhelmed players. and the starters obviously are doing just fine. it's that offense. it's really, really awful. we can point to this, that, and the other thing but when you've got basically a whole team slumping? there's something systematic occurring.

by larry on Jun 5, 2007 10:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Someone said it well in another thread
on the home page earlier today - I'm too lazy to look it up - but they pointed out that Ozzie seems like he's run out of excuses/resigned to the sorry state of affairs now.  That's pretty indicative of a systemic problem that's affecting all levels of the team.
"Looks like the joke's on us, doesn't it?"

And, once again, 3 runs.
We are stuck in 1st gear.

Cleveland is having a Sox '05 year - we are having a Cleveland '06 year.

We utterly suck in all phases of the game except (less sucky) our starters and closer.  Hard to know where to begin to fix things.  How does one eat an elephant?  What's the priority?  Bats?  Middle relief?  Defense?  Health?

Sigh.  I need to give this up for a couple months - I need to be studying for a board exam and instead feel like Al Pacino in "Godfather III".  Someone shoot me and put me out of my '07 season misery.

by winningugly on Jun 6, 2007 7:34 AM CDT up reply actions

6 walks, too. 9 innings, 16 baserunners, 3 runs.
Ah, I yearn for the days when we had 4 runs, 4 hits, 4 solo shots.
