2nd day draft picks

Duane Shaffer, senior director of amateur scouting, on Aaron Poreda, the Sox first round pick:

[Scott Merkin]

"One of the things we were emphasizing for this particular ballpark, which is pretty much of a home run hitters ballpark, is someone who can sink the ball and put the ball on the ground. This guy had the best sinker we saw all year from a college left-hander. This was a guy we focused on and we were fortunate enough to get at 25." ... He's a ground ball pitcher, at least that's what I think. He's a guy who can pitch with his fastball, he can pitch to contact and he's going to get a lot of outs that way because his ball sinks so much. ... We were always looking for the best player, the highest-ceiling athlete, the All-Star type guy. He can pitch with his fastball. His secondary stuff, it needs some work. There's no question about that. You don't get a 6-foot-6 lefty, who throws 91-to-95 [mph], unless there's a glitch here and there. But we think we can work that out fairly quickly and get him on his way."

More Draft coverage inside.

Star-divide

6th round

Johnnie Lowe, 6'5-220 RHP, Point Loma Nazarene U 3/21/85

Point Loma Nazarene has two pitchers who could be single-digit picks in 6-foot-6 righthander Johnnie Lowe and Albany transfer Tony Kirbis. Lowe, raw and inexperienced on the mound, first garnered attention last year at Grossmont (Calif.) Junior College, and had touched 95 mph this spring with his fastball. He usually sat in the 91-93 mph range and complemented it with a solid split-finger fastball. He's a physical specimen with a quick arm and athletic ability. He throws a changeup and curveball but both need work, and he's worked on a slider in predraft workouts, showing some aptitude for the pitch. He didn't dominate NAIA as he probably should have with his stuff, and at 22 has yet to develop a true strikeout pitch or bulldog mentality. Still, in a year with few college power arms, he figures to go off the board in the first eight rounds.

7th Round
Jimmy Gallagher, OF, Duke

Rivalries on Tobacco Road aren't as spirited in baseball as they are in basketball, but this year Duke does have two players who will generate interest in the top 10 rounds of the draft. Like Fronk, Jimmy Gallagher is somewhat of a 'tweener. He does not show enough range and speed to play center field in pro ball, and his fringy arm plays best in left field. He'll have to make the most of his solid-average bat speed and sound feel for hitting in order to play his way to the big leagues as a left fielder.

our first hitter
and from the numbers, he looks like a hitter, not a position player who holds the bat.  Could do worse in the 7th round.

General question
Of the 50 or so guys who get drafted every year, how many are still with the organization the following year?

Also, do the Sox not know about the five positions surrounding the pitcher?  Seems like you might need guys there eventually.

by Ryno on Jun 8, 2007 11:24 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Last year
the Sox signed 23 of the 50 right away, including 10 of the first 11 picks.  I believe we eventually signed 2 or 3 JUCO picks as draft and follows, but that rule no longer exists.

by Bull Pain on Jun 8, 2007 11:26 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

not quite sure if i'm clear on what you're asking
if you're asking whether most (all?) of them play in the sox organization for at least rookie ball and then at some level the following year, the answer is yes. nearly everyone will give it (and be given) at least that much time. the guys who drop out after rookie ball tend to have other reasons for it or get a bad injury. also, the signing bonus money they're paid is usually contingent on them spending a certain amount of time in the organization.

by larry on Jun 8, 2007 1:41 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Did it myself
I had the list of who signed from last year and found the post here about the 3 DNF guys.  I used BA's player tracker to find out where everybody is now.  I suppose not every player listed as "headed to short season ball" may actually do so.  It's possible some have already been released or quit.

10th Round
Brian Guinn, SS, Berkeley HS in CA.

Sounds like he won't sign.

A better athlete is California-bound Brian Guinn, who lacks Yarrow's power. He trumps him in other tools and was the top prep hitter in the Bay Area, with athleticism and a solid run tool. Scouts considered him a tough sign outside the first five rounds, and weren't convinced he merited first-five-rounds money.

From BA's Aaron Fitt on the draft day blog:

"The White Sox took Virginia Commonwealth shortstop Sergio Mirando, a very slick defender who also makes consistent, hard contact, as evidenced by his .370 batting average for the Rams this spring."

And this draft is forever known as the draft that passed on Porcello.

Because this kid is an obvious talent. He's more than likely going to be a stud for someone in the near future.

And almost everyone passed on him for a foolish reason.

mlb.com on Kevin Patterson
749 Patterson, Kevin    Oak Mountain HS
1B    L/R    6'04"    215    1988-09-28
Comments: Patterson is a kind of all-or-nothing, hit-or-miss kind of guy. When he can get his arms extended, he's got tremendous power. But he also has some holes in his swing and sometimes tries to work counts too much at the plate, leaving some concerned about his overall hittability. He'll never be drafted for his glove. If he hits for power, he could be a star in the future. He does have a very strong commitment to Auburn and is considered a tough sign.

The extended profile mentions he broke his hamate bone this spring.

by asinwreck on Jun 8, 2007 2:07 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Worth a shot
Kevin Patterson, 1b/c (National rank: 67)
School: Oak Mountain HS, Birmingham. Class: Sr.
B-T: L-R. Ht.: 6-4. Wt.: 215. Birthdate: 9/28/88.
Scouting Report: Power is Patterson's calling card, and he has shown he has lots of it. During a scout-organized tryout for the East Coast Showcase last summer at Mississippi State, he cleared the double fences at Dudy Noble Field, and he mashed 17 home runs in a 10-out round during a home run derby in the offseason. When his senior season began, Patterson homered three times on his first three swings. He got sick and missed the East Coast Showcase last summer, which prevented him from showing his stuff to scouts outside his area, and then broke his hamate bone this spring, which cost him most of this season. He returned for the final two games and was working out for teams leading up to the draft. He has a mature, muscular body and plus bat speed. His swing lacks looseness, he tends to drift to the ball and is susceptible to soft stuff away as well as fastballs above his hands. He's raw but adequate behind the plate, but not a fast-twitch, fluid athlete, so the consensus is his final destination will be first base. Depending on how he bounces back from his injury, he could be the first player drafted from Alabama, as high as the second round.

Pretty Good...
He struggles hitting it out of the infield. You seriously want another Podsednik? Waiting for one of his tires to blow out? He's not going to walk a whole lot because he doesn't have the pop to challenge pitchers into throwing him balls. They are just going to serve him up pitches in the middle of the plate and watch him ground them out, or pop em up.

So he won't hit for power. He might hit for a serviceable average. He probably won't walk unless the pitcher is wild that day. And he's gonna slap the ball all around the infield.

Pfffft.

I'd rather put Sweeney or Terrero in center. Heck, even BA in center would be better than Owens.

Course, this is my opinion based on some little bit of facts. Feel free to disagree.

Food -
Dogs are like 3.75 (2 for 1 for an hour after the gates open) Kosher 4.50 (no deal) - there is also a combo for both dogs (dog, chips, small pop) and burgers (burger, fries, small pop - 5.75) + plus plenty of other stuff to eat

Some of the banners were shown off Tuesday, including those featuring Pres. Barack Obama both before and after his election.

A White Sox World Series Championship banner, signed by pitcher Mark Buehrle, is also being sold, as is a Blackhawks playoff banner signed by Denis Savard and Stan Mikita.

The bidding starts at 12 p.m. Wednesday at Daley Center. Money raised goes to help the Chicago Anti-hunger Federation and the Greater Chicago Food Depository.
