Boras' work with Crede - Genius

This dawned on me the other day. What Boras did with Crede is genius. Here is my take on it.

Boras negotiated the contract for '07. He knows Crede's back is questionable, doesn't allow him to get the surgery prior to the season because if Joe can't recover fully, his value is shot and the '08 contract value is gone. By starting '07 (with the hope he can get through it) he's setup to negotiate '08. If Joe starts '07, has to have the surgery, he then becomes an unknown for '08. Worst case is he takes a very slight drop in the new salary and squeezes another year out of the Sox (Sox won't just let him go unless its know he can't compete and he announces retirement). Best case he comes back ok and goes free agent '09.

Boras is the devil
but he's also an extremely intelligent man.  He's not a millionaire because he has dumb luck.  He knows how to squeeze the most money out of teams as he possibly can.

That being said, I still don't fully buy that the Sox won't just non-tender Crede.  The very best case scenario sees the Sox trading him for below what his numbers would get because of his back, and a slick fielding .800 OPS 3Bman won't net all that much on the trade market.  As of right now, I really see non-tendering him being the most likely option, but things can change between now and December.

Crede
I came to this realization when they announced that Crede would be done for the season. Boras screwed us over because he didn't even give us a chance to have a legit third baseman this yr. Fields is good, but he had to come right up and slot in as an every day starter without enough experience or notice. I think what we need is to keep crede in hopes he comes back fully healthy (quote Bill Melton on a full recovery) and get a shortstop like Hanley Ramirez who will be available this offseason. A guy who can lead off and give you crazy range at short is a must have

Ramirez is available?
How old was he when he came up? or do I have the wrong guy.
