Floyd to the pen
Gavin Floyd is going to the bullpen. Here's Coop:
Ozzie says the Sox aren't going to sell low:
The Angels want Paulie? Well, Kenny "is asking for the house in return." And Ozzie predicts how the negotiations will go:
In other news,
- Roland Hemond was named assistant to the Arizona Diamondbacks president.
- Also, according to reports out of Buffalo, where Triple-A Charlotte currently is playing, Erstad was a late scratch from Wednesday's contest after feeling some stiffness in his neck following batting practice. Erstad reportedly had difficulty lifting his head when he was taking fly balls.
- Steve Stone will replace DJ in the booth for the six-game homestand from August 7-12.
- The Mariners are pursuing Jon Garland. Phil Rogers says Former White Sox assistant GM Dan Evans, now a top assistant to Mariners GM Bill Bavasi, absolutely loves everything about Garland. Mark Gonzalez says the Yankees are still in the mix as well (and reviews other rumors).

I love the mlbtraderumors posters...Garland has bad peripherals so he's not worth as much as Wandy Rodriguez.
If Linebrink brings in 3 prospects (one a B pitching prospect), Garland should command significant talent.

Even Rotoworld is ripping on Ozzie and Hawk now...
If you listed to Ozzie Guillen or, gulp, Hawk Harrelson, Owens has stepped up in a big way lately and just might be the White Sox's center fielder in 2008 and beyond. The numbers, though, don't show it. Owens is batting .254/.319/.270 in 63 at-bats since the All-Star break. The White Sox might as well play him over Darin Erstad after Erstad comes off the DL, but he's still looking like a long-term fifth outfielder.

It actually makes sense to me...
It looks like Ozzie is saying that he would be happy if the Angels were interested in trading for Sox players because Ozzie seems to understand that the Angels have good prospects. But Ozzie is also admitting that Kenny would ask for too many of these prospects in return for his own players so Ozzie doesn't forsee any deals getting done between the Sox and the Angels.

by The Wizard on Jul 26, 2007 7:40 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Sigh...
In any case, if we trade him we're left with 2 quality starters, 1 old man, 1 possible #3 starter who is still inconsistent enough to be in doubt, latest start notwithstanding, and 1 certifiable Big Black 5 starter hole at the end of the rotation.(2004 anyone?) We don't have anyone to fill that. Haeger, Floyd, and Masset are all either not ready/never will be ready/bad, respectively, and DLS is in high-A. There's probably someone I'm missing, but I doubt they're any good this year either. We would have to get at least 1 major-league quality pitch(er/ing prospect, which defeats the whole purpose. (A similar argument applies for Javy) A better idea would be to trade Mack/Cintron. That's an overused idea, but if we packaged them, I'm sure someone desperate for utility players would take them (The Giants could use some players who aren't on Medicare as insurance, tho I don't know anything about their farm system.)</ramble>
2. Roland Hemond still exists? The first(and only) time I heard of him before today was in a book of White Sox history, written the year of the Reinsdorf takeover (1988/9? Anyway, it all happened before I was born)

Russell projects as a reliever
Egbert, from all accounts, appears to be a guy that will be a starter long term. Perhaps a 3-4 at best, but a starter nonetheless.
There has been speculation that he could be of use in the White Sox bullpen right now, but I don't think he's a long term reliever at all.
by wite on Jul 26, 2007 5:14 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well,
W/Garland traded
#2(MB),#1(JV),#5(Count, due to the death of his arm), #4/5(Danks),#2/3(Egbert or Gonzalez)
W/JV traded
#2(MB),#2(JG),#5(Count),#4-5(Danks),#2/3(E/G)
I have Danks as a #4/5, because that's what I've heard most often, and I also haven't heard anything higher then a #3 type guy. He hasn't really impressed me with his stuff, save on a few occasions, and he seems to have very little stamina compared to the rest of the starters(A subject touched earlier).
I'm a bit of a classicist in my roation preference, because I prefer a true #1, instead of projected/prospect #1. Obviously, it can work either way.
(Disclaimer)This is in no way a particularly well-informed opinion, and is based solely on my opinion. Share feedback.

Goldstein says "above average starter"
1)Buehrle - he'll probably be more like a 3-starter at this point
2)Vazquez/Danks - whether or not Vazquez will be there is dependent on DLS' readiness. Javy could still be a legit #2, as he's actually increased his K rate and decrease his BB rate this year in a hitter's park. That definitely bodes well going forward
3)Danks/Gio - Gio should be on his second turn through the majors at this point, though I'm not sure if that means he'll be more of a 4 or a 3. Keeping Vazquez makes it matter much less
4)Gio/Egbert - Egbert is probably more ready to have immediate and sustained success because of his groundballing ways, good control and age. He's leapt across the injury nexus already, which means he's by far the most certain of the four to be what we hope he can be. We should definitely keep in mind that the other three are still highly susceptible at this point in their careers.
5)Egbert/DLS - My guess is that if DLS is ready to pitch, he'll be better than a 5, because his stuff is so good and he's demonstrated good control thus far.
In any case, even if we lose both Garland and Contreras, we should still be in a position where we have the depth to handle it. On another note, Poreda has been dominant in his short stint in rookie ball so far, with 17 K's/1 BB and a 75% GB rate. Looks like they're limiting his innings by using him out of the bullpen this year, which is probably not a bad idea.

Egbert is at A-,A+,AA? I don't know where he is, but I'm a bit wary of promotions from A ball, because it's a huge difference from AA. If he is in AA, then it's a bit easier to see that, but he's still a prospect. And prospects, by definition, are liable to fail. (Remember how excited everyone was about Jason Grilli? Arnie Munoz? Kris Honel?Britt Burns?) They don't always flop immediately, but they ARE extremely volatile.

rumors, rumors, rumors
# The Twins could go into a dumping mode after their recent slide, which has left them closer to the bottom of the AL Central than the top. It's a total longshot but executives with other organizations don't rule out Minnesota moving one of its pitching studs, Johan Santana or Joe Nathan. Both of those guys are eligible for free agency after next season. Torii Hunter might also be in play. This is the time for GM Terry Ryan to determine what it will take to keep him off the free agent market this winter.
# The recent pitching problems have caused Angels GM Bill Stoneman to reassess his stand-pat approach with his lineup. According to a source, he is now aggressively looking for a bat. Paul Konerko seems unlikely, but Stoneman might deal from his stable of prospects for Miguel Tejada, Jermaine Dye or even Mike Piazza. Tejada is due off the DL this weekend, giving scouts only a few days to assess his health and play. It wouldn't be a shock if Andy MacPhail traded him, assuming he gets a good offer.
# Yes, the White Sox and Mets do have the potential for a blockbuster. In addition to Contreras or Vazquez (maybe even Jon Garland), the Mets have kicked the tires on Dye and Tadahito Iguchi. But the Sox scouts appear to have spent more time checking out the Yankees' system than the Mets.

I don't think I would
Vazquez is signed at a reasonable rate and long term and is pitching like a top 10 AL starter. The Mets would have to give up more than their #3 OF prospect and their #2 pitching prospect. I know that seems like a lot, but this isn't a rental and prospects aren't sure things.
You are probably right that it's time to sell high on Vazquez, but I hate to give up the only strikeout pitcher on the staff.
by hitlesswonder on Jul 26, 2007 8:27 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
We're in agreement about Pelfrey
I still like Milledge a lot, and it really seems like the Sox and Mets would make a great fit, but so far nothing. I would trade both Dye and Iguchi for Milledge alone. I understand that the Mets would only be getting a combined six months of Dye and Iguchi, but both figure to be upgrades on the Mets (I guess Gotay + Easley vs Iguchi is debatable, but I'd bet on Iguchi's performance of the past two seasons vs the former two). Post ASB Dye would also be one of the better hitters on the Mets.

I used to got to the old Tiger Stadium when I was in college, and it was a LOT like the Old Comiskey - stadium was dark and dirty, lots of serious drinking, lots of brawls, lots of action. Good news for those who want Wily Mo Pena...
The Red Sox were rumored to want Salomon Torres for Wily Mo Pena last week but this may change things. Both the Pirates and the White Sox were said to be interested in trading for Pena.

Not much...
Unlike Sosa, I don't think that Pena is going to amount to much. He's actually regressed during his time in the majors.

Bukvich for Pena!
Anyone going to see The Simpsons Movie tonight? (With apologies to the Pena/sosa comparison:)
It's like Casablanca, Citizen Kane, and The Godfather, except it's really like Gigli.
No, really, I bet it's hysterical. Even the WSJ loves it, Krusty bastards they.

Unfortunately, Bukvich probably isn't enough...
I saw The Simpsons Movie last night at midnight. I fell asleep numerous times during it. I was pretty tired though. I still didn't think that it was all that great. Definitely a "wait for DVD" movie.

Yep.
The Red Sox might listen if the Sox offered Aardsma, but I'm wondering if it's not still too soon to give up on him.
