White Sox have 3 of minor leagues' top starters

Catching up on my reading, I caught this piece from the Baseball Analysts in which Rich Lederer skims all minor league starters for guys who miss bats (K/9 > 9), have decent control (K/BB > 3), and keep the ball in the yard (HR/9 < 1).

Here's the list that he comes up with:

Name Team Level Lg Age K/9 BB/9 K/BB HR/9 WHIP ERA Matt Garza MIN AAA IL 23 9.29 3.30 3.06 0.49 1.35 3.62 Clay Buchholz BOS AA EL 22 12.05 2.28 5.27 0.42 0.89 1.77 Alan Horne NYY AA EL 24 9.84 2.83 3.47 0.39 1.24 2.36 Gio Gonzalez CWS AA SL 21 11.08 3.36 3.30 0.70 1.17 3.04 Jack Egbert CWS AA SL 24 9.07 2.44 3.72 0.14 1.07 2.57 Jacob McGee TB A+ FSL 20 11.08 3.12 3.55 0.66 1.11 3.12 Chris Cody MIL A+ FSL 23 9.07 1.48 6.13 0.10 0.93 1.77 Kyle Ginley TOR A MDW 20 9.73 2.98 3.27 0.79 1.51 4.86 F. de los Santos CWS A SAL 21 11.00 3.34 3.29 0.49 0.88 2.55 Chris Jones BOS A SAL 23 9.29 2.59 3.59 0.77 1.43 4.98
But after another dominating performance (7IP 3H 0R 2BB 12K) yesterday, Jack Egbert makes the cut as well. I've taken the liberty of adding him to the list, and have asked Lederer for his thoughts on the late qualifier Egbert. But, maybe if we link to him, he'll be more likely to respond. ;)

Orioles claim Gustavo Molina off waivers from Sox
Orioles claimed catcher Gustavo Molina off waivers from the White Sox.
Molina, 25, opened the year as Toby Hall's replacement in Chicago and went 1-for-18 while backing up A.J. Pierzynski. He was hitting .209/.265/.281 in 139 at-bats for Triple-A Charlotte. He's a quality defender, but he'd make Orioles fans yearn for Paul Bako if he took over as the team's No. 2 catcher next year. He'll be assigned to Triple-A Norfolk.

Hmmmmmm...

I remember
that hit.  I felt so relieved for the guy.

by palehose67 on Jul 30, 2007 4:24 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Only reason to move Molina from 40-man
is if we're importing multiple players who must be protected in a trade.

I wouldn't...
read too much into this.  By my count, the Sox 40-man roster was already at 39 before this.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Jul 30, 2007 4:27 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Ummm, yeah...
Read Cheat's post again.

by SSH2005 on Jul 30, 2007 4:29 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

It could be that, or...
they just decided that Molina's not worth wasting a roster spot on, and thought he might clear waivers in all the confusion going on today.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Jul 30, 2007 4:32 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

How pathetic is it?
That the Sox kept Molina for that long on the active and 40-man roster and now dump his ass.

by SSH2005 on Jul 30, 2007 4:45 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

It just shows...
how thin the Sox are in terms of minor-league catching talent, at least talent that's close to the majors.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Jul 30, 2007 4:51 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Actually it means alot
Either it's a trade for multiple players or they are going to call up two rookies.  The latter is high unlikely.

Egbert
Egbert in July:
1.50 ERA 30.0IP 24H 7BB 41K.

Pretty dominant numbers. I don't understand why Gio and Eggy aren't in AAA. Ah well, maybe after the trading deadline.

Charlotte Pitching Rotation
  1. Heath Phillips
  2. Lance Broadway
  3. Andrew Sisco
4 and 5 aren't worth mentioning.  Barring a trade they should be promoted soon.

Meh.
If the Red Sox were really expecting that the best player they would give up for Jermaine Dye would be Wily Mo Pena, the White Sox are better off not making a deal with them.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Jul 30, 2007 4:57 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm with you
I don't like Willy Mo at all.

After looking over some roster here are some outfielders I think we could get

Andre Ethier- Like him lot.

Jose Guillen

I dont see any reason to be sad about not getting Wily Mo

by omnipotent grab on Jul 30, 2007 5:04 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I would do....
Willy Mo and Jed Lowrie for Dye, not Will and a fringe pitching prospect.  However nobody cares about Lowrie or the shortstop position.

Crazy...
Imagine what could we get for Jenks.

by SSH2005 on Jul 30, 2007 5:52 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

This is the exact reason that...
you should sign a good reliever coming off an injury.  If he booms, you can trade him and half his salary for a good prospect.

by chisox on Jul 30, 2007 6:18 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

When is the last time...
the Sox picked up any money when trading a player.  They would rather take back a crappier prospect than eating any of Contreras' contract.

Bow down to the greatness that is ROWAND...
381 AB / .328 AVG / .928 OPS / 15 HR / 60 RBI

And he still looks sick defensively in CF.

by SSH2005 on Jul 30, 2007 7:22 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Someone (not the Sox, I hope)
will overpay dearly for Rowand.

I honestly thought he went downhill after 2004...
because he got off steroids.  How can a guy be so great in two seasons and so mediocre in the rest of their career?  It's pretty weird.

OMFG, what a way to lose a good prospect...
to an injury.  Michael Bourn just tripped on the trash-hole that is Wrigley's bullpen mound on a pop-fly.

They may want Dye afterall.

by SSH2005 on Jul 30, 2007 7:40 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Soriano = .856 OPS for $136 million dollars...
That's why you don't re-sign an aging slugger like Dye to an expensive, long-term contract.

That kind of production for that kind of money is a fucking joke.

Bring on the kids!

by SSH2005 on Jul 30, 2007 7:47 PM CDT   0 recs

That's my favorite move...
Let's lower the number of runs that he drives in!

by SSH2005 on Jul 30, 2007 7:50 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Ozzie would be tempted to bat him leadoff as well.
But I think that Ozzie would at least bat Soriano second.

Wait a second...

This is the same manager who bats Cintron second.  Nevermind.

by SSH2005 on Jul 30, 2007 7:55 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

i hate to say this
i wish soriano gets hurt on that brick wall, just because its stupid, the bleachers have been completely rebuilt so put some padding up, I can see why its one of Torri Hunters no trade parks.

side note- ted lilly's track record in night games is awful

by tubesox on Jul 30, 2007 7:49 PM CDT   0 recs

any rumblings, i hate
to waste tonight watching baseball tonight to see what happens

by tubesox on Jul 30, 2007 7:50 PM CDT   0 recs

It's almost to the point where I am going to be...
disappointed if we don't deal Dye and a starter.  But I guess Kenny has to get a decent return back for Garland if he does deal him.  But if Dye isn't traded, I am going to be pissed.  That is a must.

by SSH2005 on Jul 30, 2007 7:58 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

How sad is it that our farm system...
can't even produce a decent bench guy like Ryan Theriot?

by SSH2005 on Jul 30, 2007 7:54 PM CDT   0 recs

They keep producing pitchers
like in the the threads main post and we'll be able to get position players galore in a year or 2.

by ballyb on Jul 30, 2007 7:58 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

people need to relax with that
who did the cubs produce hitting wise from 200-2006, corey patterson? hee sop choi?

they just produced pitching like we current are doing

by tubesox on Jul 30, 2007 8:00 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Good point, I forgot that the Cubs got...
Mike Fontenot from the Orioles in the Sosa trade.  And they basically paid the Orioles over $15 million for Fontenot.

by SSH2005 on Jul 30, 2007 8:04 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

i rather
a john danks, gio gonzalez, and fautino de los santos then soto, theriot and pagan, and with that im official done wisting my time on the cubs

by tubesox on Jul 30, 2007 8:01 PM CDT   0 recs

Ummm, supposedly ESPN 1000 is reporting...
that the White Sox and Jermaine Dye are going to negotiate a two to three year contract extension.  I didn't hear it myself but I saw some dude post it at SoxTalk.

by SSH2005 on Jul 30, 2007 8:16 PM CDT   0 recs

The Sox will offer Dye a below market contract.
He's more valuable to other teams where he could be a DH part time.

by ballyb on Jul 30, 2007 8:22 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I wonder if it's a bogus rumor...
that the Sox threw out there so teams will offer more for Dye.

by SSH2005 on Jul 30, 2007 8:33 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Now Bruce Levine (ESPN 1000) is saying
That a deal won't get done withe Dye and Sox and both Dye and Mackowiak will probably be traded.
