Thomas not as efficient as he could be?

Hard to say...

He may be talking about biomechanics: Smith thinks (like Ted Williams) that Lau's swing has too much head movement. So "more efficient" may mean less movement in his swing.

More generally, the anti-Lau advocates (and I think Hawk is among them), think that Lau's teachings impede power hitters in particular. They assume a great power hitter using Lau's swing would be even better is they weren't using that swing.
