Around SBN: Jeremy Lin's Game-Winner Was Incredible, Worth Remembering

This season - I'm Tired Rant

I'm tired of rally killing double plays.
I'm tired of seeing players drop balls.
I'm tired of seeing infielders play outfield.
I'm tired of seeing batters that can't bunt - bunt.
I'm tired of seeing power arms that can't find the plate.
I'm tired of seeing hits that can barely get out of the infield.
I'm tired of seeing power arms that can't find the plate find it.
I'm tired of seeing players being traded for single "A" ######.
I'm tired of smart remarks like saying look at the baseball card.
I'm tired of remarks about how this kid will be something special.
I'm tired of seeing runners in scoring position stand there for 3 outs.
I'm tired of outfielders that can't throw a ball farther then they can spit.
I'm tired of hearing the grinder analogy used for ever aspect of the game.
I'm tired of seeing a offensive lineup without a single batter hitting above .270
I'm tired of rotating relief in a game till we find someone that can blow the game.
I'm tired of seeing players that are past their prime by years being presented as quality.
I'm tired of knowing I can probably leave the game before the end - and not miss anything.
I'm tired of going to games knowing that it probably will be no better than the last one I saw.
I'm tired of seeing good starting pitching wasted because of no offense, no defense, or no relief.

I'm really tired of seeing what's on the field for the price on my tickets.

Star-divide

Sorry - after last nights game, just need to vent about the season. (Still a Sox fan - still like going to the park - still like baseball - Guess I'll watch the Little League World Series and Regional Tournaments )

Another one reaches the end of his tether
Ozzie will sell you the rope you can use to hang yourself with, that fucking commie bastard.

I feel bad not watching last night's game all the way to the bitter end.  What could be a more perfect capper to the worst game of the season than Erstad & Owens as the thin red line staving off defeat?  I hope someone DVR'd this game, it's a classic performance encapsulating this season.

But seriously, I always love speed.

Goddamn, I love this site
I absolutely KNEW the first post to this diary would be from Pete.  Would've bet my 401k on it.  Thanks for your consistency, men.  Keeps me grounded, since the markets have been a pain in my ass for around 2-3 weeks now.

How can you not love this post, it's Art!
I put it right up there with "Howl" by Allen Ginsberg.  All of Brush Back's primordial pain is spilled out right there on the page.
But seriously, I always love speed.

Now do the rest of the homage
I just flipped through the poem - Jesus, that guy was high.

it's heavy man, dig?
"He is treading water in a sea of retarded sexuality and bad poetry."
But seriously, I always love speed.

Hey, cat, I need to score a fifth
of Stoly or Bushmill after reading it, dig?  And visit the Kerouac museum down here.

Far out.

I had a professor in college
Who studied under Ginsberg.  He said Ginsberg pretty much wrote everything that came across his mind.  Which you can kinda see by reading "Howl."

The professor himself was a Zen Buddhist monk who loved to drink and cursed just as much.  Needless to say, Postmodern Literature was one of my favorite classes.

The beauty of tenure
I was never a huge fan of the Beats, they haven't aged very well but you gotta love their enthusiasm.  There's a couple things I like, "On the Road" and "Naked Lunch".  That Burroughs is one twisted fuck.
But seriously, I always love speed.

Naked Lunch was one of the most
twisted tomes ever.  Thompson was just being derivative.

Writers are a sensitive lot (aren't you?).  I think it's why very few becme successful during their lifetimes - their guts are spread out for all to see, and if they are truly emoting it is a horrible thing to behold (though vastly entertaining).  So they drink/drug to cover the pain/remorse/guilt/frustration with the state of existence until dead.

Then we all pick up the entrails and dig the art.  Fascinating.  What makes the Internet posting so great is the anonymity, so we don't HAVE to drink/die early.

Except when watching the 2007 Sox!  I am currently in rehab, so I'm trying to get better.

aren't you a little old
to be glorifying Bukowski? No one has to be intoxicated to create art that comes straight from the soul.

How can you read this stuff
not jacked up on something?  I need to alter my consciousness to feel like these guys write.  If you don't, man, you are in a world of pain.

There actually are a lot of drafts to the current
version, plus, iirc, the final chapter-thing was added on after he finished the "I saw" and "Moloch" sections.  One of the tricks of the beats and confessional-style poets is that it only looks like off-the-cuff writing.  Supposedly, O'Hara was the only guy who actually pulled that shit off.

I now thank English 4whatever Contemporary Poetry for that fascinating insertion.

by colintj on Aug 16, 2007 2:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Incidentally
O'Hara is probably my favorite of the group.

by Sox Machine on Aug 16, 2007 3:35 PM CDT up reply actions

man, i am so opposite
o'hara was too obscure for me.  if you don't chase after the references, how do you take it all in?

that said, the poem about billie holiday is really good.

by colintj on Aug 16, 2007 3:42 PM CDT up reply actions

I dunno
He seemed more accessible than most, and while I didn't get a lot of the references without looking them up, I could usually get it from context. I think he captured city life pretty well. That said, perhaps my favorite single piece of postmodern literature is Kotzwinkle's Fan Man. I enjoyed the chapter that was almost entirely "Dorky dorky dorky dorky dorky dorky dorky dorky dorky dorky..."

by Sox Machine on Aug 17, 2007 11:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Never read it or heard of it, tell me more!
And my favorite piece of definitively postmodern literature is The Crying of Lot 49.  That was so much fun to read and still so interesting.  That's probably a very obvious answer, but whatever.  Those were the easiest papers I ever wrote, just because I actually had so much to say about it.
