Josh Fields

Project over 600 abs Fields is on pace for 36 Hrs and 109 RBI.

This is his first year in the bigs. Anyone see a 40 homer 130 rbi season from him in the next year or two? I believe with some tips from some of our veteran hitters he could become one of the top players at whatever position he ends up playing next year. I think he would have been a shoe in for ROY if Crede had his back surgery last season and Fields started the season in the Majors.

Maybe AL ROY... but Ryan Braun
is having a much better all-around year.

Ryan Braun
is in a league of his own.  That kid's numbers are nuts.

No
I'll wager that he doesn't have a 40 HR season in the bigs in the next 2 seasons. You should keep in mind that there's an excellent chance he's back in AAA next season.

Fields has shown power, but no ability to get on base in the bigs and his K rate is currently at a career-killing rate. Plus his glove at 3B is simply terrible. He can't play the position. You can rate his season a qualified success and he's young enough that his defense and OBP skills could improve. But he's nowhere close to being the top rookie in the AL.

For comparison...
Jeff Liefer in 2001 had 18 HRs in 254 at-bats with an.830 OPS. Offensively he outplayed 2007 Josh Fields and he was just about as good at 3B.

One of the highest TTO% in White Sox history?
He's currently sitting at 45.6%, which I know is just behind some of Big Frank's highest TTO%'s.  If Fields had been better at drawing a walk this season, he could be over 50% right now.

three true outcomes

The Three True Outcomes
-Home runs
-Strike Outs
-Walks

TTO% measures a hitters propensity to do the above.  High TTO batters swing and miss a ton, but hit a lot of balls out.

And Thome completely slipped my mind.  He has one of the highest career TTO% of any player ever.  Over 50% this season.  What an oversight by me.

But Franks numbers were significantly better
since he didnt strike out much and walked a hell of a lot.

I liked it more before I saw Liefer's numbers
And remembered that what Fields is doing now is nothing special. It just looks great compared to other Sox prospects. His K rate is a killer and it will be interesting to watch his September to see if he can make more contact. I'm honestly glad Fields is on the Sox, because he is interesting watch unlike most of the rest of what's going on this season.

2001
was liefer's third time up in the majors and he was 26. i don't think the comparison is apt.

My feelings exactly
Hes not doing well but hes a lot better than other call ups. Im hoping that his September is similar to what BA did in August last year only with more slugging of course.

a friend of mine said it best
"I couldn't believe it when I saw Fields already had 16 HRs, then I couldn't believe how uninspiring his #s were considering he has 16 HRs."

Walk is doing a stand up job
hes one of the best hitting coaches in the game. He tells Josh "hit it hard". And thats what Josh does.

Tough crowd
I'm pleased so far.  His Win Share % is 4th among AL third basemen.  Like the original poster pointed out, extrapolating his numbers for a full season gives you a 30+/100+ player.  I think he was pushed harder than your average 24 year old considering he devoted half his training in college to football, with practice/playbooks/watching video/etc.  Crede had over 2700 ABs before being full-time, Fields had less than 2000 ABs between OKST and the minors.

He doesn't seem to be going through as many fastballs in the zone recently either, which was a worry a month ago.  He took King Felix and Putz deep last week.  I notice he uses three different bats, sometimes all against the same pitcher.  He's still making adjustments and trying to learn.

as am I
I'm just a little concerned because there are warning signs that he won't make the turn and he could regress.  I'm obviously talking about his near 5:1 K/bb ratio.

Well...
...that's because it takes three to strike out.  Tack on a foul or a ball, and it boosts the average.

by Sox Machine on Aug 26, 2007 1:24 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'd bet though that most at that average
walk far more frequently than he does.  Missed pitches are still pulling him down.  Nonetheless, you don't get guys with his approach and power that frequently.  We'll see, but there are more than a few things working in his favor.

I have a problem with...
using RBI to evaluate a player's worth, since it relies heavily on where that player bats in the lineup and what players bat ahead of him.

I hope Fields fixes the holes in his swing, or we could have ourselves a Troy Glaus/Richie Sexson clone. I guess that wouldn't be terrible... but I would really like to see him improve his OBP at the least by drawing some walks once in a while.

Glaus would be OK
I'm thinking if he doesn't fix anything, he'll be a Russell Branyan.

by Sox Machine on Aug 26, 2007 11:13 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Would people be dissappointed...
if Fields only became as good as Branyan?  Branyan does hold a career OPS+ of 107.  Of course, Branyan's defense was awful just about everywhere, IIRC -- I hope at the very least Josh will be athletic enough to play an above average LF.
