Sorry to make the first post off-topic...
But I just saw this on my Google homepage: http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/rumors/post/White-Sox-won-t-comment-on-Tejada-report?urn=mlb,41358

Apparently the Sox made a waiver claim on Tejada?  Huh?

I didn't want to make a new journal, because I know I'd have to fill it with extraneous characters to meet the quota and I don't have much to say on the brief article, just relaying the message.  Then again, that sentence probably would've filled the quota.

I dn, but I'd like everyone to discuss Micah
Schnurstein.  I understand he's been demoted, but he's posted ridiculous numbers and he's still relatively young.  I wonder if he could be a late bloomer.

Also: Francisco Hernandez was an honorable mention on that catcher's list Goldstein did, so you might as well throw him on there.

White Sox Payroll
I was waiting until after the trade deadline to update it in hopes that there would be some massive turnover. Alas, my waiting was in vain. Nevertheless, I finally updated the White Sox Payroll link in the sidebar.

Did I miss anyone or mess up? (I'm sure I did)

Aside from exact figures on the young guys (i just
estimate .5 instead of taking the hassle), it looks like my Excel spreadsheet I keep because I'm the hugest nerd around.  I usually use mlb4u.com

by colintj on Aug 7, 2007 1:00 AM CDT up reply actions

$79,125,000 ?!?!
That's a lot of money to have committed for 2008 for this bad of a team.  On top of that Cintron, Crede, Ozuna and Pods are ARB eligible, what a mess.

Jose is killing us.  I really dislike being forced to move Javy or Garland just because Contreras sucks so bad, that's brutal.  We'd have a lot more flexibility this winter if we weren't stuck with him.

I always love speed

by ChicagoPete on Aug 7, 2007 7:57 AM CDT up reply actions

Well, the idea was that we would have
tradable commodities and flexibility.  The money commitments drop off pretty rapidly after '08.  Considering we thought we'd contend this year, if we looked like we were on pace to win 83 games or so, we could have got some decent value in trades.  But JD and friends sucked it up and scared away conservative GMs suddenly possessive of their prospects, despite the fact that the track record isn't nearly as high as the lack of trades suggests.  The result, not surprisingly, was Schuerholz taking advantage.

by colintj on Aug 7, 2007 11:45 AM CDT up reply actions

More potential adds:
John Shelby isn't lighting it up, but is posting pretty decent numbers and is still only 21.  Same thing with Sergio Miranda, who's 20.  David Cook is weird, at least fun to check out.  He might make 4th OF someday.  Maurice Gartrell at least is posting numbers and hasn't skipped any levels, though he's definitely old.  Another maybe sorta kinda 4th someday.  There's a decent number of rookie ballers hitting well, but they're in rookie ball and I have no idea about any of them.

For pitchers, my kind of under-the-radar dude i like is Justin Cassel, though he's apparently injured right now.  Big groundball rates, but we'll probably never hear from him again.  Don't forget Oneli.

None outside of the first two have really distinguished themsleves.  You should probably throw Poreda up on there officially.

by colintj on Aug 7, 2007 12:56 AM CDT reply actions

Off the top of my head
without much thought as I head to bed, my Top 20 would look something like this
  1. Gio
  2. DLS
  3. Sweeney
  4. Richar (who was 5 in my head a week ago)
  5. Eggy
  6. Carter
Big dropoff (7-9 are pretty much interchangable)
  1. Poreda (Based on draft position and fastball alone)
  2. Broadway
  3. McCulloch
  4. Russell (I've pretty much ignored his starts. I thought he was a reliever entering the year, and that's where he's finally ended up. Think Nick Masset.)
  5. Perez
  6. Shelby (I was hoping for more growth in the second half, but I like him. He's got a long way to go though.)
  7. Francisco Hernandez (I won't believe it until he has two consecutive good seasons)
  8. Nevin Griffin
15 a&b. The injured hurlers -- Cassell and Harrell
Now you start scraping the barrel for interesting guys. It's time to include the Rookie Leaguers and really fringy guys
  1. Jose Martinez
  2. Sergio Miranda (I really don't know what to make of him. He was the steal of the Sox draft for sure, but has shown no power in A-ball but a very good batting eye.)
There's a ton of interchangable guys from here on. Fringy players and those that haven't even reached full-season ball.

Bristol
He's a raw, lanky, toolsy outfielder for the Bristol Sox. Probably the most interesting player (aside from Poreda and Griffin) in the Sox rookie leagues.

There are plenty of other guys down there who maybe might could possible one day turn into something if everything goes right.

Sergio Morales, Po-Yu Lin, Christian Marrero (same school as Morales), John Ely

I can't believe I've missed it for a month.  Does he have a minor-league assignment?

Nevin's on the roster

Apparently Bobby Thigpen is managing out there!

by colintj on Aug 7, 2007 11:52 AM CDT up reply actions

and whitesox.com says nothing
from their list others signed must be Estill (CF), Gilbert (CF), Curtis (C),  Mahin (RF), Johnson (2B), Vargas (RHP) going by what I remember from the rookie ball boxscores

by The Wizard on Aug 7, 2007 1:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Should you include Sisco?
Also, count me as a non-believer in Sweeney.

Poreda

Brandon Allen
I would put him on this list.  His offensive potential is higher than Carter.  I would slot his at # 11

I think
Slightly more power and he's left handed.  He isn't  as refined as Carter(who I like better) because he still strikes out way too much but potential should put him on a top 20 list.

Well if you're going to go with
High power guys who have no shot in the majors, at least go with one from the high minors; Thomas Collaro.

I'm not sure...
Richar can be considered a prospect anymore.

25 PAs and you're a veteran?
i think he's going to have to get a few more ABs before i'm declaring him a major league player.

by larry on Aug 7, 2007 9:23 AM CDT up reply actions

I just think that our options are so low...
that he will make the team out of spring training, and stands a good chance to earn the starting gig right away.
"God knows I gave my best in baseball at all times and no man on earth can truthfully judge me otherwise."

by Shoeless In SC on Aug 7, 2007 11:28 AM CDT up reply actions

well
the usual standard for whether someone is still a prospect is whether they would be eligible the next year for rookie of the year. since richar doesn't have the requisite number of at-bats yet, he's still a prospect.

by larry on Aug 7, 2007 11:32 AM CDT up reply actions

either has to be on roster
for 45 days or have 150 ABs. the former doesn't count when rosters expand so he won't reach that; however, it's probably likely he would reach 150.

by larry on Aug 7, 2007 12:01 PM CDT up reply actions

I thought they signed
Ozuna to a 2 year contract last year?

by ballyb on Aug 7, 2007 8:29 AM CDT reply actions

7-10
  1.  Broadway
  2.  McCulloch
  3.  Poreda
  4.  Martinez
Others:  Chris Getz, Sergio Morales, Micah Schnurstein, Kyle McCulloch, Po-Yu Lin

I'm still a Sweeney believer.

Go Badgers!

by shaftr on Aug 7, 2007 9:39 AM CDT reply actions

also
I know they are rare, but perhaps it wouldn't be a bad idea to do another prospect for prospect deal (pitcher > positional).
Go Badgers!

by shaftr on Aug 7, 2007 10:22 AM CDT reply actions

That would be ideal
but all we seem to be doing is acquiring as many pitchers as possible. I hope Kenny really concentrates on getting positional players this off-season.
Speed is all we Need!!!

by omnipotent grab on Aug 7, 2007 10:27 AM CDT up reply actions

Well since none of our pitchers
except Egbert have crossed the age-23 injury nexus, it seems wise.  We need to remind ourselves that these guys could still slip badly, especially DLS who's a good distance away.

by colintj on Aug 7, 2007 11:54 AM CDT up reply actions

so did...
john rocker.

As I recall
Rocker was pretty good pitcher. He was just a knucklehead.
"Find out what you are doing wrong and STOP doing that."

by Tdogg on Aug 7, 2007 11:42 AM CDT up reply actions

he was good
for about a season and a half. rest of his rather short career was pretty darn bad.

by larry on Aug 7, 2007 11:45 AM CDT up reply actions

Ages 23, 24, & 25
ERA + 199, 174 & 162
His  1st half at 26 before the trade his ERA+ was 142. After the trade is when he totally tanked but 3 1/2 decent years out of 5 (he pitched 2 games in year 6) is far from bad.
"Find out what you are doing wrong and STOP doing that."

by Tdogg on Aug 7, 2007 12:10 PM CDT up reply actions

not sure i would use ERA+
for a reliever. that WHIP of 1.7 was pretty nasty at age 25

by larry on Aug 7, 2007 12:14 PM CDT up reply actions

It's time for Kenny to trade for Carlos Quentin...
According to the Arizona Republic, Eric Byrnes has agreed to a three-year contract extension with the Diamondbacks.
The deal is said to be worth around $30 million and comes shortly after the two sides reportedly broke off negotiations. The newspaper speculates that with Byrnes signed long term and both Chris Young and Justin Upton not going anywhere, the Diamondbacks may look to part with Carlos Quentin.

Just think what Rowand will cost now...

by SSH2005 on Aug 7, 2007 12:19 PM CDT reply actions

Wow!
3 years / 30 million for Eric Byrnes!

I'm a fan of his because the wacky hair and living in Half Moon Bay so that he can surf more, but he just isn't that good. I always think of him as ideally a 4th outfielder in a good outfield.

GO SOX!

by rhythm on Aug 7, 2007 12:44 PM CDT up reply actions

I think hes above average in left
and his speed actually helps him because he can actually hit the ball to the outfield.

by omnipotent grab on Aug 7, 2007 12:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Don't worry....
he'll give the Sox a discount. He loves us!

I say they offer Rowand $ 15 mil. for 3 years and he'll come back with....."make it 6 years for $ 18 mil. and you got a deal." He loves it here !

by White Sox Randy on Aug 7, 2007 1:33 PM CDT up reply actions

No way
$5-6MM a year when Hunter is going for $12-15K/year for 5, and 'Drew is going for triple digit $?  No one is that loyal.  Paulie/Mark's discount was "only" $1-2MM/year and maybe another 1-2 years shorter on the end of the contract.

Aaron goes at least $8MM/year for 5 years.  Coming off AS game, "grinder" with some actual talent, and Byrne getting $30MM?  I'm probably talking out my neck, but it'll take more than $15-18MM to get him.  A lot more.

Can anybody here play this game?

by winningugly on Aug 7, 2007 2:27 PM CDT up reply actions

I wouldnt want to sign Rowand to a 5yr deal
even if he is the legend. His age will start to show 2-3yrs into the deal.

Why is there a desire for him?
Don't know much about him - 2 years in the league, 25yrs old, ML offense not impressive so far - currently on DL. What is his upside? How does he rate better the Sweeney?
