Angels/ChiSox Discussing Konerko

Just got a solid tip that the Angels and White Sox are discussing a possible Paul Konerko deal.  No idea how serious these talks may be.

The Angels made an offer to Konerko in the winter of 2005-06, when he was a free agent.  Konerko does have a limited no-trade clause to consider.

Some names being bandied about include Ervin Santana, Howie Kendrick, and Chone Figgins. Of course, all three would not be in the deal. The Sox also seek relief help.  Moving Konerko would mean putting Nick Swisher at first base, while Figgins could be the leadoff hitter the Sox are after.

pretty sure i agree with larry
that if we know about it and it's a trade, that it's not going to happen.  at least that's what's happened in the past.

i dunno
i'm throwing everything i think should be true out the window with KW these days. konerko makes little sense for the angels. then again, maybe this is some sort of three way deal. who knows.

kendrick?
we've already got two very probable .750 OPSers that can play at second.  getting a guy who almost literally never walks and whose power was overstated thanks to the PCL and CAL league doesn't really do that much for us.  he's cheap and good, but Richar and Ramirez are cheap and almost as good.

yeah what?:
once ramirez or richar hit over .240 in the majors talk to me... let alone the .330 than kendrick hits...

by Jbasic89 on Jan 5, 2008 12:24 AM CST up reply actions

that's really not even the point
the point is that .750 OPSing 2B are easy enough to find and that the difference between that and .800 isn't enough to get rid of Paulie.

Kendrick is a nice piece, but you don't build around him and you certainly don't lust over him.  you apparently looked at everything the angels had and singled out Kendrick.  he's got a unique skill set, but not necessarily one that makes him especially valuable.

who can pull off a .xxx/.330/.420
like plenty of other players out there.  his BABIP was miserable.

Kendrick
Wasn't the hold-up (among other things) over the Miggy Cabrera to the Angels deal over Kendrick and the Angels' reluctance to include him?  If so, he's not going to be involved in a deal for Konerko.

If a trade went down, it would (probably) be for one of their 500 outfielders (Rivera, Figgins, Willits, GM-Jr) as well as one of their backend starters (Saunders, Santana).  Maybe the Sox would also want a bullpen arm.  If Rivera is healthy enough to play CF, I'd do a Rivera + Santana deal, although I'm not sure if he can still play there after the injury from last season.

It has to be GMJr
That's who the Angels want to move and he "fits" the Sox need. Of course, his defense blows and he has a career .330 OBP but I wouldn't be surprised if the Sox acquired him. He was all the rage last offseason. So I would see GMJr and Saunders/Shields for Konerko and Crede/Fields as a possibility. But lets hope not.

GMJr
Complete no-trade clause.  I have no idea if he'd waive it (he gets an extra $500k for doing so) but just bringing that up.

by 3E8 on Jan 5, 2008 10:31 AM CST up reply actions

I guess it depends
on if he wants play or sit on a bench. I'm hoping he really likes Cali.

by hitlesswonder on Jan 5, 2008 10:39 AM CST up reply actions

Obviously...
Sarge Jr. is going to waive his no-trade clause to go from a platoon OF'er/DH/bench player to the everyday starting CF'er on the White Sox.  Sarge Jr. probably views the Torii Hunter signing as a way of pushing him out the door after the news came out that he used HGH.  Sarge Jr. is going to get the $42 million over the remaining 4 years on his contract either way, so he would go where the playing time is.

Sarge Jr. doesn't help
I think KW is moving in the direction of "younger and reasonably established major league" players.

Using that as a criteria then Kendrick is a fit (but he never takes a walk or steals a base so...)

Reggie Willits.  Late getting to the bigs but his numbers last year were impressive (OBP and stolen bases included) and what you're looking for in a lead off hitter.  However, can he play a good CF?

Chone Figgins.  29 years old and most established. Outstanding at the top of the line up but after last year's breakout year (and given that the Angels want WS rings in 2008), hard to picture him being moved.

So I'm guessing one of those 3 are the centerpiece with pitching (E. Santana, Scott Shields, for example) rounding things out.

Konerko seems like a great fit although it does kind of overload the Angels with right handed bats.

Konerko isn't a great fit for LAA
They have a better/younger/cheaper 1B already and options for DH already under contract (Anderson, Morales).

Konerko would be a luxury DH for them, so I can't see them giving up much for him. GMJr + Shields/Saunders + money for Konerko + Crede/Fields/prospect seems like something they would entertain. But otherwise I don't see how this would happen.

by hitlesswonder on Jan 5, 2008 11:25 AM CST up reply actions

I wouldnt go that far
Konerko was down last year but he would definitely be an upgrade over Anderson and unproven Morales.

Luxury DH? The Angels are trying to win the WS and are up against Detroit, Boston and New York.

And Kotchman is younger I'll grant you that but I don't know about better yet. Slug .500 at least once.

Yes the deal needs to be expanded but I can most definitely see them looking at Paulie again.

More to the rumor
Found here

A source told the Daily Breeze that the Angels and White Sox are discussing a Paul Konerko deal, with Howie Kendrick, Ervin Santana and Chone Figgins candidates to be involved.
We can't imagine that the Angels would seriously entertain the possibility of parting with Kendrick for Konerko. Figgins maybe. It wouldn't be a very good idea at all, but it might not make the team any worse. In our minds, Konerko only makes sense if he replaces Gary Matthews Jr. He and Casey Kotchman had the same OPS last year (841 to 840). Now, Kotchman was protected from left-handed pitchers, but Kotchman actually did well when he got to face southpaws, he's the far better defender and he's due $11.5 million less next season. First base simply isn't a need for the Angels

Angels interest in Paulie
If the Angels are so interested in Paulie...maybe they would be interested in trading Tori Hunter + ? . Then KW would finally get his man, the second time around.
