A look back at the 2008 season and predictions
Here goes. I thought it may be a little fun for each of us to look back at this season and maybe find one post or statement moving into the 08 season that is now silly or was just dead wrong that we made. I think mine is pretty obvious as I was reminded of it by a certain person's tagline for quite some time.
I know how much the site likes to do this anyway so it shouldnt take long for you to do a search on your own name and find a little dirt. Or maybe you were just PERFECT.
At this point I don't care if I was wong about everything... The Sox are in the playoffs and that wasn't suppose to happen for the NEXT DECADE!
I will of course go first. Please join in or you can just laugh at me.......
Oh I forgot the Sox will soon envy
Their impressive display of avg 60+ wins. We don't even have to wager. The Rays win 80 games and I will ship you your favorite 6 pack or bottle of reasonable wine.

Here is a snippet from probably the most hilarious post I made
I am personally going to guarantee that Crede will not have an OPS above .800 at the end of May. Furthermore, I will say that it is highly likely that he does not have an OPS above .700.
Please Kill Me:
Doesn’t every team have a Pablo Ozuna? I don’t understand complaining about him. They play 162 games. Occasionally people who don’t make the All-Star Game have to play.
Out-underacheiving the other guy.

This is my favorite headline
White Sox Trade Farm, Make Run at 3rd Place in Central
AIM: SouthSideCheat
In fairness Cheat
CW said 88 wins was expected to be 3rd place. I’m not sure if KW knew the division was horribly over-rated or if he just rolled the dice and got lucky. I think he had an inkling, and things turned out OK.
nothing like a feel good post, eh, tdogg? couldn't go with "A look back at the 2008 season and predictions that you got right?
i’ll probably go with my prediction about the indians. they’re still the best team in the central (mutters something about injuries and luck…)
the sox out-talled their opponent.
Hell no Im all about egg on face.
And wanted to see some of the most hilarious arguments and statements made early and prior to this season. There were plenty.
The SSS motto should be the answer to "What is our deepest fear?". Or maybe just Prozac.
i think i have to give the overall title to madvillian (and his buddies on that deserve honorable mention - SSH in another great supporting role of idiocy). that made me laugh at the time and it still does.
the sox out-talled their opponent.
I had forgotten how bad it got until I read
madvillan’s link. Its funny how this team needed every little thing it got from various players at different points of the season. Next offseason should really be special!
The SSS motto should be the answer to "What is our deepest fear?". Or maybe just Prozac.
my early prediction for next year: white sox win 77 games, make all sorts of dumb offseason moves to placate the fan base.
worked this year.
the sox out-talled their opponent.
I know in ST I said they'd win 72-75 games, though in all fairness
after the Swisher trade said they could go as high as .500.
However, May 9th, I cut my losses. So there. I apologize for nothing. Screw you all.
I also said Alex Gordon was the “breakout AL position player” and Liriano was the “breakout AL pitcher”.

I was mostly wrong about individual players
Coincidentally, Blackburn was one of my breakout guys.
Otherwise, Chris Young was bad. Cueto and Volquez showed flashes. And Boone Logan, looked great for about 10 weeks.

My absolute favorite of the year:
I would sell Rays 89 til my fucking face caved in.
“All this has done is put the Tigers in a better position to contend with us.”

And my second favorite:
“Yeah, the Rays look ready to
grow up a bit. Might actually make my Sox pilgrimmage to Tampa interesting this year.
Jeff Cox: I’m going to call you "FN”.

I’ll say. Happy Valentine’s Day, WU. The Sox love me.

Also, Keith Law can eat me.
Chris D (Capital City): You honestly think the White Sox had the worst offseason? Swisher, Cabrera and Quentin will make a huge impact, and the bullpen should be a lot better.
SportsNation Keith Law: (1:56 PM ET ) The problem is that they don’t get it. They’re not a good team. They have no shot to contend with Detroit or Cleveland. Trying to improve the ‘08 club was the wrong strategy. I didn’t mind the Swisher acquisition, but why are they giving up prospects?

I generally like Keith Law
And that was pretty much my feelings before the season as well. That said, it sure is nice being pleasantly surprised.
yes!
back when i had nothing to do at work but post on SSS…. i miss those days.

About time you check in, Deac.
How’s the gig?
No team can match the White Sox combination of power, pitching and experience. Certainly not the Rays. White Sox in 5
i've been reading all year
just havent been posting….. i try to read throughout the day, but my work load is ridiculous… which is a good thing because it means im not going anywhere soon. its great to be back in chicago though.
12/12/07- We'll miss you Andy Gonzalez
I agree fuck Keith Law and his verifiable Sox hating ways.
He tends to do okay with rookies and early player projections but tends to suck with regular old players from year to year. Neyer can suck it also.

Crazy season
Expectations were mighty low in the spring, but Imagine what the predictions would have been if you told people in March to assume that:
PK would end up .240/.344/.438/.783 22HR 62RBI
Swish .219 /.332/ .410/.743 24HR 69RBI
OCab .705 OPS, 84 OPS+
Crede misses half the season with injury
Josh Fields a complete bust
Javy, your supposed #1, ends up with a 4.67 ERA
Linebrink out for a third of the season with injury
Contreras out for half the season with injury
Remarkable season, I think Ozzie did an incredible job keeping this thing together. My prediction was certainly way off, but I hedged a few times and said it would all rest on the shoulders of the young guys to make a difference – we went a huge 4 for 4 with Danks, Floyd, Q and Alexei way exceeding expectations.
Some may say the lesson from this season is that a savvy vet roster will have the experience to carry you through. IMO the lesson is that if you’re going to gamble, gamble on young guys exceeding expectations instead.
you're full of shit and you’re old. how do you plead?
and others might say the lesson is don't trust the eyes of chicagopete when it comes to evaluating defense.
the sox out-talled their opponent.
That wasnt exactly fessing up to a "bunch" of stuff you said there buddy.
The SSS motto should be the answer to "What is our deepest fear?". Or maybe just Prozac.
i took care of it for him, tdogg.
some people just can’t admit when they’re wrong. ;)

Oh yes the ole eyeball test
All in good fun Pete, but your eyes suck.

thankfully, lasik is available. pete'll be much better next year.
ask denard span.

and jhonny peralta

Fess up to what? I predicted 77 wins, same as you probably
If you’re trying to get a mea culpa from everyone, then say so directly.
I said they were old, decrepit and injury prone, and to have any prayer of a decent season the young guys would all have to play out of their minds.
The biggest shocker, to me, is that they did this well without Swisher. He’s coming into his prime, and if anyone would have a breakout for a Q!-like monster season you’d think it’d been him. Instead he had the worst year of his career – and they still overcame that.
btw, my eyes tell me that OCab is an overrated asshole. Give me Uribe any day, he was .020 behind him in OPS and I still say he plays a better SS (definitely has a much better arm) – and costs less than half the money. Plus Ozzie wouldn’t feel the need to waste his 84 OPS+ at the top of the order to placate his enormous ego.
you're full of shit and you’re old. how do you plead?
very indirect.

I love you guys.

c'mon dude, weren't you the one that produced perot-like pie charts demonstrating why thome is done?

Good memory. Pete's indignancy is TOT.

pete was drawing ridiculous conclusions based upon like ten games or something.
but, iirc, it wasn’t that thome was “done” (let’s not ssh a more nuanced point), as in, totally useless. it’s that we shouldn’t expect a 150+ OPS anymore. and that’s certainly true. if not particularly insightful or a conclusion one should draw from the charts he linked to.
the sox out-talled their opponent.
I'm glad my posts from 6 months ago are still branded with a white-hot iron in your memories
Especially WU’s pickled mind
you're full of shit and you’re old. how do you plead?
we all tend to remember the stupid shit one another say
rather than the insightful stuff.
the sox out-talled their opponent.
I just remember the pretty charts
and someone getting undies in a bundle when they were critiqued.
Pete, I don’t get white-hot any more, unlike some others, Vesuvius.

nice try OPOS
keeping the wit holstered till tomorrow still I see

Your anger management classes are working pretty well so far.
That court-mandated action works sometimes, don’t it?
As far as being FOS, I haven’t checked out for the majority of the season, only to reappear for the last 2:00, like a basketball fan. THAT is FOS, bubba.
No team can match the White Sox combination of power, pitching and experience. Certainly not the Rays. White Sox in 5
this short ban is a joke, old man.
sick of this bullshit. it’s got me trading SPYs all the damn time.
You're on thin fucking ice my pedigree chums, and I shall be under it when it breaks. Now, fuck off.
Hasn't helped much either, has it?
WM/WB both went down, and without the bailout NCC/RF/SOV might’ve been next. The wrong regulatory response.
Should’ve stayed in Naples, kid. You were having a grand time there.

no worries. this young dog keeps learning new tricks.
