Commentary: It May be Difficult for the White Sox to Take an Early Lead in Their Best-of-Five Series Against the Tampa Bay Rays Today Because the Series Does Not Start Until Tomorrow.

I am second to no one in my belief that it is very important for the White Sox to get off to a good start in their best-of-five playoff series against the Tampa Bay Rays.  I suspect many of you, fellow Sox fans, feel the same way.  There are many reasons for this -- the first and most obvious being that the Rays have the home field advantage, with 3 of the possible 5 games in the series scheduled to take place in Florida, meaning the Sox must win at least one game on the road in order to take the series, and it might as well be Game 1.  In addition, the Sox have a great deal of momentum built up from their 3 straight wins in elimination games, and it would be a shame to see that cut short.  Finally, the Rays are a young team which has never been to the playoffs before, and therefore may be more prone to panic if they find themselves in an early hole than a more seasoned team would be.

However, with all that being said, the White Sox are at a distinct disadvantage if they wish to "steal" the first game of the series today for one primary reason:  The first game of the series is not scheduled to take place until tomorrow.  It seems to me that it may be difficult for the Sox to win Game 1 today (regardless of pitching match-up, lineup, momentum, etc.) given that game is simply not going to actually take place today.  Admittedly, I am not, as I think I have made clear in the past, a "Stat-Head", or a "Research-Guy", or "Someone-Who-Is-Capable-Of-Even-The-Most-Basic-Level-Of-Rational-Thought", but I have done some digging, and have been unable to find even a single instance of a major league baseball team jumping off to the lead in a series prior to the commencement of that series (and certainly not on the road).

I realize that, as sports fans, we always bring the "win today" attitude to any game, and I would not have it any other way.  However, without wanting to seem overly pessimistic, I think we, as more enlightened fans, owe it to ourselves to temper our expectations slightly regarding what the Sox will be able to accomplish today.

Still doesn’t make sense. Why would I, a lifelong Sox fan, hope the Sox don’t win the World Series? For fear of more of these posts? That certainly wouldn’t sway my desire for the Sox to win. Other than that giant leap, I’m lost.

A.J. Pierzynski – White Sox

For or against?

I’m not even going to answer that, and I’m just going to skip right to the end on this one.

Dream Scenario of Ex-Giant Glory

Bottom of the ninth. Two outs, runners on second and third, and the White Sox are down by one in Game Seven. Full count. Pierzynski is called out on strikes on a pitch that’s a foot outside of the strike zone. While he’s arguing and the other team is celebrating, a mythic roc of fire descends from the heavens and pecks out Pierzynski’s esophagus.

Giants fans shouldn't be THAT miserable...

Lincecum-Cain have the makings to be one of the best 1-2 in baseball, they seem to have some other decent young talent (Sandoval, Posey — I think there’s others, too, although I can’t name ’em)…. Then again, Sabean is the GM, so that sucks rather hard.

With the management they have in place, I have every bit of confidence that they will find a way to fuck it up

and thereby make me smile.

Example A is having Lincecum throw more than 125 pitches in an attempt to get him a complete game in order to pad his Cy Young credentials. I agree that the kid deserves the award over Webb, but want to see it awarded elsewhere solely due to this and other acts of idiocy on the part of the Giants management. They should be punished for their stupidity, even if it means punishing Lincecum as well.

Did I mention I can’t stand that team?

Tomorrow doesn't strike me as a great matchup for the Cubs, either

Billingsly is like, really, really good — as in one of the top ten best starters in all of baseball (ish — that might be top 15 or so). Zambrano is good, too, and any one game he can absolutely bring it… but he’s also sporadic (5.80 second half ERA which doesn’t necessarily prove that he’s sporadic — I’m just putting it there as a FWIW thing).

More of a general question — are all of these series’ spaced out so that you can get by with only using three starters (and have normal rest for them), at least in the divisional series’? ‘Cause if so, that’s a huge boon to the Dodgers, who will get to go Lowe (ERA+ of 136) and Billingsly (ERA+ of 141) four out of the five games.

As reasonable as your post seems,

I cannot help but feel that the true opponent White Sox is, of course, the Cubs. The “winner” of this postseason is the team that wins more games/series between the two. The Cubs, of course, watched their exhausted ace pitch them right into a loss. The White Sox are therefore up a half game.

I say that, not knowing.

Hard to them passing on the bonanza that last night was.

I think they’ll pass out free black leather jackets to keep you warm.

I think it was in the other thread we were making fun of the conspiracy theory from the August Rays game

Well, look at this

What the hell is that behind the “WORLDSERIES.COM” header? Looks to me like the exterior of a certain shitty country concert venue, that occasionally hosts a few thousand cowbell-wielding baseball fans.

THE FIX IS IN!

ah fair enough

hope the trend continues for a couple days

I couldn't resist

“What happened brah?”

“I think they like scored more runs than us, broseph.”

“Is that allowed?”

“Totally not fair, brah.”

(In all honesty I would like a Cubs/Sox world series, as a world series taken from the cubbies in ‘their year’ would be the sweetest one of all)

You're on thin fucking ice my pedigree chums, and I shall be under it when it breaks. Now, fuck off.

Up a little early, MM. Or going to bed late.

Stay sharp – you ought to be raking it in in this market.

No team can match the White Sox combination of power, pitching and experience. Certainly not the Rays. White Sox in 5

yeah, this stuff is nuts. i am consumed by the market lately. one day just blends into the next. trade, drink, sleep. repeat.

i catch myself hoping that it lasts like this for another year, but i don’t know if i’d live through it.

a bit late to the party, but...

I say you keep up posts like that. Sports talk overall is very repetitive and people love that. Tell me how these discussions over the years have changed (the list is not exhaustive, just what came to my mind first):

- does a team benefit from first round bye in NFL playoffs
- is interleague play good or bad
- what does cubs/sox series mean to you
- can you be the fan of both cubs/sox

etc etc … at least yours is not serious. Sarcasm is great!

ahhh Beautiful Camel Back Ranch in sunny Glendale AZ...a couple friends and I are going to meth up in Scottsdale to play some golf and raid the fridge in some 16000 sqft house and I was curious as to which SSSers have ever been out there. Unfortunately our trip falls short of the first game as we leave the evening of the 4th but does anyone know if we can tour the facilities and watch some practice drills or anything of the sort.

Any tips, tricks, or ideas are welcomed. Will my SSS press Badge work?
