Eleven hours after [the White Sox were] eliminated from the playoffs, [Clayton] Richard called [his high school coach Jake] Burton and asked if he could use McCutcheon's baseball complex this week to work on his fielding.

omgz Jake Peavy might be on the market OMG!

I’ll start off with the realistic trade proposals:

Broadway, Getz, Fields, Crede and Horacio Ramirez for Peavy. And Charlie Haeger, too — the Padres are actually going to give him back to us just so we can trade him for something.

Keeping the roster basically intact means a healthy Carlos Quentin returns to left and a rejuvenated Nick Swisher returns to center — unless the White Sox can work out a deal with Ken Griffey Jr.

As funny / ridiculous / sad as it is

That Clayton Richard had such trouble with finding firstbase, it’s nice to see when a player actually takes the initiative and tries to improve at the things he needs to on his own. Good for him and us.

I can live with that except

I think Fields is traded and the 3b is filled. I think they will have a little more cash then we think but not over the top (whatever that means). Either way the playoff apperance does buy again some good will and the Sox can expect 2.6-2.8 million next year. The other route might be the trade for a starting pitcher to shore up a potent starting rotation.

The one draw back to Fields is I really believe the Sox will be serious about an improved defense next year.

i don't disagree on your prognosis for fields.

but i’m also having trouble seeing a match for a 3B with what the sox have to offer. the sox have poreda. that’s it. everyone else is throw-in material. and i just don’t see the sox trading poreda, either. like i said, i’m sure KW will come up with something – heck, maybe a three team deal involving dye going to some team, some team sending a player to seattle or something, and the sox getting beltre could be worked out. but that’s getting pretty far down the wayward path.

by larry on Oct 15, 2008 12:05 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yep

I think it will be something bizarre and out of left field (the KW way), something no one could probably guess at this time. But in all seriousness I don’t think you are that far off to what might happen.

the only other place you could make a trade, conceivably, is from starting pitching.

and that means vazquez. the problem, of course, is that you’d be blowing a huge hole into the middle of the rotation which already has back-end questions. i’m sure such a move would be satisfying to many fans initially but they’d probably be changing their tune around may 25. i, of course, don’t mind undisciplined vazquez so i don’t think the sox should move him. nor do i place a high degree of probability on them doing it, though i’m sure it will be seriously considered.

I think the only thing with Rocco

Is some conversations about hand shake deals and promises between the team and him because of his medical condition. But Ive seen that go out the window before (Grant Hill example).

Of course they could WIN the WS and that might be the over the top factor, but it is still the AL East and it is still Tampa.

dante's the doctor, but this is from morrissey's article today.
The 27-year-old Baldelli has no idea whether he’s going to recover fully or suffer a serious setback. He knows he feels better. He doesn’t know why.

So he rests. A lot.

the only issue now is whether i make it out of hampton alive.

by Toonderstrook on Oct 15, 2008 1:09 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

put him on a modified griffey plan.

three or four starts a week, BA late inning replacement (not like baldelli’s defense is bad or anything), DH sometimes, etc.

by larry on Oct 15, 2008 1:11 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

herm will handle it.

apparently they’ve figured out something enough to get him on the field for the last couple months. i’ll take the upside. the man just performs whenever he’s healthy. the sox, for better or worse, probably have enough weird outfield depth to take the risk.

by larry on Oct 15, 2008 1:09 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

"Whenever he's healthy" is an awfully big caveat.

But $8-10MM for 2 years (yeah, I raised your stinkin’ $7-9MM since he’s on the national stage) is not expensive. Look how Uribe turned out for $4.5MM – initially it looked like a waste and in the end saved our (championship) season.

I'm talking about the $4.5MM folks were crying about

being spent on resigning Juan last year and comparing it to Baldelli’s potential cost for next year. The efficacy of spending $4-5MM on Baldelli is borne out by how Juan’s expenditure turned out. Compare apples to apples, fer Chrissakes. I’m not saying Juan was our MVP. I’m saying he was worth the $4.5MM.

That's a pretty realistic plan...

I like the idea of Baldelli, actually. It takes advantage of the Sox crowded OF and gives them at least some games with a CF that can hit and field. I’d be happy if the Sox followed that plan.

In trying to predict what KW will really do, I think Tdogg is right and that the Sox want to go with getz at 2B and fill 3B with a veteran. I have to think KW really, really, really wants Chone Figgins because he gets a 3B and “leadoff hitter” all in one.

by hitlesswonder on Oct 15, 2008 1:44 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

also seems to fit KW's MO

of taking a risk on players whose value has diminished for whatever reason (Floyd, Q!, etc)

In this political season I have to say

Larry your plan is a little too conservative for my liking. I don’t think you can have both Getz and Fields in the lineup. I believe Fields will be packaged to Seattle for Adrian Beltre. I will go a step further and say that you can get Beltre and Bedard in exchange for Fields, Richard and Link. I also believe you can pick up a starter from the Giants (Cain) in exchange for Konerko and Cash. I think you can move Javy for some good prospects. I think you sign Damaso Marte to a 2 year deal with an option to serve as your second lefty. (i know the people that were just fans since mid 2005 might think i am crazy for this suggestion…but a bad marte is still far and away better than Ramirez/Logan.

C AJ
1B Swish
2B Getz/Uribe
SS Ramirez
3B Beltre

CF Owens/Anderson

actually I don't think any of the trade ideas are far fetched at all.

The mariners will be looking to unload a lot of players and the Giants have some decent pitching but their leading home run hitter had 16 homers. Benji Molina. They need power and if the sox pick up a portion of Konerko’s remaining salary I can see the sox getting Cain or Sanchez as Phil Rogers suggested.

If i was making satirical trade offers I would have included a Mike Macdougal and Brian Anderson for Grady Sizemore deal that would benefit both teams. The sox could use Sizemore’s speed and power combination and Macdougal could step into the vacant Indians closers role…with Anderson providing outstanding defense roaming center for the Tribe.

I like everything except

the idea of giving Nick Swisher’s AB’s to Baldelli. Here’s why:
Nick Swisher OPS+ in every season with 500+ PA: 101, 125, 127, 93. Career OPS+ of 112
Rocco Baldelli OPS+ in every season with 500+ PA: 99, 100. Career OPS+ 102

Now Rocco has durability issues that limit his seasons of greater than 500 PA. But I don’t think you put undue weight on his 80 PA’s this year because he can’t stay healthy. It’s still a small sample size and his true talent is more likely to be closer to his career OPS+ (102) than this year’s OPS+ (117).

Swish will soon be 28, Baldelli is 27. Swish may be one of the best bets in all of baseball to bounce back.
I will await more fielding metrics (PMR, UZR?, chone, Dial) to become available before definitively commenting about Swish in CF. But my impression is average, maybe slightly below average.

So I’m fine with getting Baldelli, but I would switch their roles. Swish starts everyday somewhere. Baldelli gets 3-4 starts a week. If Baldelli outplays Swish over the course of the season then that can change. But that’s probably a 200 PA difference over the course of a season and I’d rather Swish get those extra ABs until proven otherwise.

I think we ought to call Thome and Konerko the "Cholesterol Brothers" because of the way they clog the bases.

by bhoov on Oct 15, 2008 2:27 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

his true talent is not closer to 102. that's ridiculous.

what’s driving his career OPS+ were two “average” seasons at age 21 and 22. that’s where over 2/3 of his career PAs are from. a guy who hits like that as a 21 and 22 year old does not have “true talent” there. his true talent is much closer to 115-120. just like swisher’s.

by larry on Oct 15, 2008 2:36 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

by the way, his projections prior to this year pretty much nailed his OPS.

though obviously in less PAs. i’m quite comfortable in him being able to put up similar or better numbers next year, assuming health.

by larry on Oct 15, 2008 2:56 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

and, whether you, i or anyone else like it or not,

swisher is not going to be starting regularly at the outset of next season. i try to inject some realism into my plans. if this were larry’s ideal plan, payroll would be going up by about $30M, swisher would be starting, dye would be gone, grudzielanek would not be acquired to caddy for getz, and a variety of other changes.

We shall

see. I think he will be starting regularly. He is one of Kenny’s guys and KW gave up some good talent to get him. I don’t think they will bench him just because he had a bad year. I think the suggestion his true talent is closer to his 80 PA OPS+ of 117 is the ridiculous statement.

By the way my definition of true talent includes ability to play healthy. You can’t just toss out ‘07 when he posted an OPS+ of 65 in 137 ABs because he wasn’t healthy. Part of his deficit IRT to Swish is that not only does he have a high likelihood of missing games he also has a higher likelihood of playing at a lower level because of not being 100% (as in ’07). This is part of his “true talent”.

And of course it always come back to larry statements = brilliant. Everybody else = ridiculous. When you say that statements you disagree with are ridiculous and most people are thinking “well I might disagree, but that’s not crazy” you make yourself less credible. Stepping back and admitting that there is more than one reasonable opinion only helps your argument I think.

I think we ought to call Thome and Konerko the "Cholesterol Brothers" because of the way they clog the bases.

Yes

and we know that one thing that projection systems have problems with is projecting the impact of injury and illness on performance. Especially when the injury/illness may be some undefined metabolic disorder. There aren’t very many PECOTA comps for that.

I think we ought to call Thome and Konerko the "Cholesterol Brothers" because of the way they clog the bases.

by bhoov on Oct 15, 2008 3:03 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

seems to have nailed it even without such information, no?

not sure you need to get specific w/r/t to the injury/illness issue. he either plays or he won’t. they’ll either manage the issue or they won’t. sounds to me like they’ve got it under control. i was skeptical earlier this year but he’s exceeded my expecations. he will hit if he’s healthy. the guy has never failed in that. i think his situation can be managed successfully and i’d sure as heck start him if healthy over swisher in center. baldelli = better CF. ymmv.

by larry on Oct 15, 2008 3:07 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes

this year. But I’m quite confident that PECOTA didn’t “nail” his ‘07 season. Should we go with ’07 wrong projection or ’08’s correct projection? Flip a coin? This all comes back to my point: PECOTA can’t project a illness that might be completely gone, might be completely debilitating (can’t play), or might be just debilitating enough to give you a 65 OPS+.

I think we ought to call Thome and Konerko the "Cholesterol Brothers" because of the way they clog the bases.

by bhoov on Oct 15, 2008 3:12 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

great.

what does this have to do with starting him in center over swisher if he’s healthy?

by larry on Oct 15, 2008 3:15 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Obviuosly

they didn’t identify that he was too ill to play in ‘07 until he had posted 150 PA’s of suckitude. And given the apparent waxing and waning nature of his disease, what if he started of OK then the disease worsened, but he was already entrenched (is he just slumping or sick?). Does he get 150 PA to find out? 100? There’s just no way to model this.

Look Larry, we’re arguing over 200 PA’s max. I’m just much less confident in Rocco’s ability to be not only healthy enough to play, but healthy enough to play well. You are confident in those things. Let everyone else figure out their own opinion.

I think we ought to call Thome and Konerko the "Cholesterol Brothers" because of the way they clog the bases.

by bhoov on Oct 15, 2008 3:22 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not going after you.

I’m just saying Swish should be the default. He should play most everyday somewhere. When Baledelli’s in CF though Swish should be somewhere (DH against lefties, spelling Paulie, spelling JD) I like the plan of Baldelli 3-4 times a week. You seem to like 4-5. OK. We can differ on this without someone’s opinion being “ridiculous”.

I think we ought to call Thome and Konerko the "Cholesterol Brothers" because of the way they clog the bases.

I guess we’ve boiled our discussion down to it’s essence: including durability in true talent is ridiculous for Larry but perfectly reasonable for bhoov.

by larry on Oct 15, 2008 3:38 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I can't

calculate it, but neither can PECOTA. This is one of those cases where medicine is an art and it’s impact on performance will be variable. What I can do is outline reasons why PECOTA was wrong in ‘07, right in ’08 and we don’t know in ’09 (which I do above). PECOTA is operating on the false premise that he doesn’t have a potentially debilitating, waxing and waning metabolic disorder. This is what makes me lack confidence that Baldelli is displaying his true talent this year, but not in ’07.

I think we ought to call Thome and Konerko the "Cholesterol Brothers" because of the way they clog the bases.

by bhoov on Oct 15, 2008 3:46 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

okay. why do you think the sox or any other team would continue to trot out a player with a mitochondrial disorder if he's not feeling fully fit.

i don’t understand why your adjustment for injuries is so heavily bent towards reducing his performance. playing time is what will hurt him – and most players – when injuries are taken into account. he’s simply not going to be allowed to repeat ‘07 now that people actually know what’s wrong with him and how to treat it. he won’t be asked to be part of the “just play through it, pussy” crowd. his ass will be on the bench or the DL if he’s not feeling good. the sox have an excellent medical staff.

by larry on Oct 15, 2008 3:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sometimes it's hard

to tell. With waxing and waning chronic diseases it’s very difficult for patients and physicians to notice changes that might happen slowly over weeks. So they often rely on blood tests. If you’re following Lupus for example that’s feasible. AFAIK Baldelli’s condition has not been specifically diagnosed well enough to do these kind of things. So how many ABs do you waste trying to figure out if he’s sick or just in slump?

Anyway, Lar I gotta run. Neglecting my work getting into this extended discussion. We’ll just have to agree to disagree. It’s been fun.

I think we ought to call Thome and Konerko the "Cholesterol Brothers" because of the way they clog the bases.

Chiming in

I’ll put this down here because it’s a response not to one comment, but rather the conversation on the whole.

I agree more with bhoov than larry. Swisher will be back, and, without moving one of JD/Kong/Thome, he’ll be back starting in CF. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

as for the true talent discussion that ensued… Substitute Joe Crede’s name for Baldelli’s, and then ask yourself the same questions. I know this isn’t 100% analogous because of age and the different injury issues. But think of it this way. Since he broke his finger in ‘05 and revamped his swing, Joe Crede has been a plus defensive .850 OPS 3B when healthy. But he’s missed HUGE chunks of time over the last three seasons, and seen his overall numbers take HUGE hits when it’s clear he’s playing through pain.

Now none of us are clamoring to bring Crede back next year because he can’t be counted on. And the same could be said of Baldelli.

He could be a great pickup. he’s a player who we’ve all thought about adding at one point or another. But were he to be acquired the Sox would have to insulate themselves against his inevitable breakdowns and/or implement a plan to manage his workload and field time such that he remains as healthy as possible.

i don’t see why this is a problem with swisher and anderson on the team. they don’t need to insulate. they’re already insulated. i see baldelli more as insulation against what i view as inevitable injury/missed time for dye, PK, quentin and thome. basically, what a griffey acquisition should have been and better.

the joe crede comp is a decent one. i don’t think joe (except for perhaps the last month or so of his sox career) played below his true talent level. he was an average player. yes, he missed time. that was (largely) where the impact of his injury was felt, not in his overall production. the same would likely be the case with baldelli.

by larry on Oct 15, 2008 5:24 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Take a look at the gamelogs since '05

since I believe that is when he finally corrected his horrible swing mechanics and found a new “true talent” when healthy.

Crede was 1.000 OPS machine in ’05 after the injury (not true talent, obviously)
He put up an .830 OPS in ’06 (which featured some time nominal time missed, but featured some talk about back surgery)
has terrible ’07 and finally admits back is bothering him Mid-May. Continues to play (poorly) and argue against surgery.
In ’08, Has an .850 OPS when he misses his first time to back issues following Cubs series, posts terrible numbers over his final 100+ at-bats.

It’s a shaky argument, admittedly. But I wrote (a since deleted) fanpost at McCovey Chronicles (in anticipation of Crede being traded there) comparing a healthy Crede to Adrian Beltre. And I still think that comparison applies. But I wouldn’t count on Crede for anything.

perhaps i am in the minority here,

but i think rocco is gonna get a better deal than 2 years/$8-10M. guys with his kind of upside are gonna get generous offers based on limited appearances. he’s looked good since he’s come back. his talent was always highly regarded. some gm is gonna be ready to give him something like 3 years/$21-24M with some incentives to make that $10M per. i’m not saying i think that’s what he should get, but i don’t think we’re gonna get a shot at some kind of a bargain bin high upside contract with baldelli.

Then I walk from it.

Any 3 year guarantee is horseshit unless incentive-laden. He has much to prove. And with a heretofore wacky illness that can’t be quantified let the Yankees or BoSux overpay for him.

I have a hard time believing he’s ready for a major market team (that would be the only one to overpay).

indeed.

i can’t believe anyone would give him that much guaranteed money over that long of a contract. the guy hasn’t played in the last three years as many games as he did in one at 21. like 225 ABs in the last two seasons? i love the guy as much as anyone obviously but this is high, high risk. you may very well be throwing away $24 million for absolutely nothing at all. the only team who can throw away such money and actually may need an outfielder is the yankees. not much of a market at that level methinks.

but you never know. if that’s what it takes to get him – he’s still got at least five more games to impress and jack up his value – drop it.

by larry on Oct 15, 2008 7:41 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

i hope you're right. i would love to see that guy in a sox uniform. hopefully teams are appropriately wary of his health.

but i just see the handful of interested teams all looking at his upside and that he plays a premium position and he’s entering his peak years. once that happens, what would be a reasonable risk turns into a small scale bidding war. obviously i’m just speculating, but there’s a lot to like about rocco and i imagine this won’t be lost on potential suitors.

Cashing checks and having sex.

by MarketMaker on Oct 15, 2008 8:20 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

he's not a full time player, as far as i can tell.

maybe something will change and he can convince a team that he is capable of doing so. seems medically impossible/inadvisable from what i can tell. you’re basically buying at best, what, 2/3 of a full time player? maybe 3/4? i dunno what the exact number is. but you don’t give that kind of contract to a guy who you already know isn’t a full time player and has a high risk of being less than that.

griffey has knee surgery
Chicago White Sox outfielder Ken Griffey Jr. on Tuesday had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, which bothered him for most of the 2008 season.

The surgery was performed by Cincinnati Reds’ team doctor.

This season, Griffey had the knee drained twice while he was with the Reds and once after his trade to the White Sox.

Griffey’s knee troubles could be the source of his dip in home runs last season. He hit 30 in 428 at-bats in the 2007 season but just 18 in 528 at-bats in 2008.

“There’s no question,” Dr. Tim Kremchek said, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. “It affected that push-off leg. How much I don’t know. But he was dealing with it all year. There’s not much you can do early in the season.”

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3644615

The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.

Beginning Wednesday, street light banners commemorating a series of special events in Chicago are going on the auction block for charity.

Some of the banners were shown off Tuesday, including those featuring Pres. Barack Obama both before and after his election.

A White Sox World Series Championship banner, signed by pitcher Mark Buehrle, is also being sold, as is a Blackhawks playoff banner signed by Denis Savard and Stan Mikita.

The bidding starts at 12 p.m. Wednesday at Daley Center. Money raised goes to help the Chicago Anti-hunger Federation and the Greater Chicago Food Depository.
