Folks still digging Furcal at SS next year?

PS When Rays close this ALCS series out watch America embrace the Low Payroll Kids. This is perfect. ESPN has already started embracing this as evidenced by the promos we saw at the Rays/Sox game a couple weeks ago.

Furcal is horribly over-rated

He’s a slightly better than average SS on the wrong side of 30 due to be looking for one more huge contract. I hope the Sox avoid him.

by madvillian on Oct 16, 2008 9:28 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

his talents aren't quite the type that you worry so much about declining with age, especially at say 31-33.

the preeminent concern should be his injuries. i think he’ll be productive if healthy. that’s just a pretty big if. the dodgers are keeping him anyway.

by larry on Oct 16, 2008 9:43 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

just reading the speculation over at mlbtraderumors about his contract.

don’t know how much stock to put into it but the idea of a 1 or 2 year contract for him seems real friendly to the dodgers and risky for furcal. that’s a contract i would do for him in the heartbeat, however. start getting beyond 2….

by larry on Oct 16, 2008 9:56 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

2 years 25 million as a starting point

but I don’t see why Furcal wouldn’t be looking for a 4-6 year deal.

He deserves some accolade

He’s always been top of the class in Bill James’ fielding bible for shortstops as well as defensive win shares. His offense production is probably average overall in the big picture, but well above average for his position. I don’t know the extent of his back injury to determine if the risk in signing him would outweigh the reward. But I’m very interested

by 3E8 on Oct 16, 2008 10:14 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

well, the big picture is probably that he hits fairly well for a ss

fields well for ss, but he comes with huge question marks about health and isn’t cheap.

He’d probably be a perfect fit with the white sox if they could get him on a 2 year deal. Let Herm do his magic.

I disagree...I think Rowand showed them the way last season...

Wins are often a lagging indicator of an injection of Rowandosity into a team and clubhouse. The Sox win in 2005 came a full 4 years after Rowand was introduced into the White Sox major league organization. The Phillies playoff run has come in the third year after being Rowand. I expect the Giants will be resurgent in 2010 or 2011.

Yeah being so early is the only suprising thing

but there’s been whispers since training camp that Quennville has been lurking and Savard’s contract was up at the end of the year. He’s a real live NHL coach, something the Hawks haven’t had since Darryl Sutter was behind the bench. Tallon might be the next to go, Scotty Bowman isn’t messing around.

by El Duque's Raft on Oct 16, 2008 11:54 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Agreed re: Tallon

he hasn’t been terrible, but he’s made a huge mess out of the goalie situation. Things are going to look worse and worse (for him) if Khabibulin continues to play well — I was at the game last night and boy did that Russian put in a great effort. So now their second big FA signing is going to be nothing more than a platoon player — that’s a great allocation of funds.

by CWSKeith on Oct 16, 2008 12:24 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If he continues to play well

I’d imagine he’d be a valued commodity in a trade?

"...fined for what, hittin' the ball into outer space?"

by Illini0509 on Oct 16, 2008 1:54 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

True

but if they ship out the Russian and Huet keeps playing like he has (poorly), then that will open up a whole new can of worms.

by El Duque's Raft on Oct 16, 2008 12:33 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, probably

to what extend though, I’m not sure. Even with his early (good) start, I think the Hawks would gladly unload him if a team, any team, would willingly just take the contract off of the Hawks’ hands. For one, it’d allow them to actually play their fourth best defenseman in Cam Barker, who has essentially been relegated to the A not because of talent but because his salary cap hit takes the Hawks above the limit. Of course, that wouldn’t be necessary if Tallon didn’t hand Brent Sopel a contract in the middle of last season — there’s another example of Tallon being more ‘reactionary’ than intelligent. The Hawks picked up Sopel in training camp last year for basically peanuts. He made the roster and played superbly for the first half of the season — Tallon bought that as the real ‘Brent Sopel’ and gave him a two (or three) year contract extension. Of course, ever since (around) Christmas of last year, Sopel has played like… well, Brent Sopel. It’d be the equivalent of the Sox signing Wise to a three-year, $15 million dollar deal this year because of his good play (in one season).

by CWSKeith on Oct 16, 2008 12:38 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i am against your proposed wise signing.

the only issue now is whether i make it out of hampton alive.

by Toonderstrook on Oct 16, 2008 12:40 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah...

pretty surprising but there were some signs that this might have been coming. There was an article a few weeks back about the lack of a Savard extension and he was a bit dismayed by that. Furthermore, the Hawks had actually lined up to bring in Quennville a month or so ago — I believe he got arrested for a DUI, though, so that was sort of thrown under the blankets. There was also the issue of Toews having to call a players-only meeting without Savard’s knowledge. I’m not going to play the ‘chemistry’ game, but there were questions as to whether Savard even had full control of the team (whatever that means).

I think this speaks a lot about Tallon, who more and more is striking me as a very reactionary GM. So the Hawks got off to a slow start… why wasn’t this move made before training camp? Did four games plus a pre-season really tell all that much? Don’t get me wrong — I’m fine with the move. Quennville is ‘proven’ and seems like a better hockey mind (and coach) than Savard…

As far as the PP, that will eventually work itself out — there’s too much talent for it to not work. It’ll take some time, especially with a new system in place, but I’d be shocked if the Hawks don’t end up with (at the very least) a league-average PP.

by CWSKeith on Oct 16, 2008 12:20 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Talk about taking the captaincy by the reins.. for a 20 year old to call a players only meeting that’s gotta be a first.

I wouldn’t be too worried about the powerplay.. I think the media and hype probably surprised some of the young guys, maybe just pushing things early in a year they are supposed to make the playoffs. Expectations can do that; talent will win out in the end, these guys are too good to be this bad. I don’t see how they don’t become at least league average by season end.

Ehh...

I think I have a relatively good handle on the Hawks (and their players, minors included) but outside of that there’s a big drop-off. Furthermore, my knowledge of the game itself isn’t all that great.

What I might be interested in doing a few years down the road — if there isn’t a ‘breakout’ in the time being — is trying to see if I can analyze the stats a bit better and see what I might find. It just seems like how players are analyzed statistically is so rudimentary… guys are lauded for penalties in minutes which strikes me as absolutely crazy — a guy is good because he puts the team down a man a lot? Even the offensive stats strike me as crappy… goals and assists are okay but they strike me as being a lot similar to RBIs in baseball in that they’re somewhat circumstantial. For example, if you’re on a line with Alexander Ovechkin, you damn well better rack up a shitload of assists. And if you’re on a line with Joe Thornton, you better be scoring 25-35 a season. I’ll probably have to cheat a little bit and look at what Beane (and others) have been doing with analyzing soccer in a different light and see if I can apply that to hockey, too, but that might be a fun little ‘experiment’.

fields' knee surgery a success
As Fields described the lateral release procedure, four tendons hold up the patella and the one on the outside got scarred up and tight. That tendon was released so the patella could go back where it’s supposed to be in the center of the knee.

Cartilage damage also was cleaned up in the knee.

“There turned out to be a lot more cartilage damage then what was initially expected,” said Fields, who added that the knee soreness came to a head through a handful of collisions at home plate and hard slides breaking up double plays for Triple-A Charlotte in 2008. "It turns out that this has been needed for a while.

The execs will still make plenty of dough, but they're no where near AS happy...

They probably thought they had the perfect playoff storm with LA (2nd largest market), Chicago (3rd), Philadelphia (4th, as you pointed out) and Boston (6th, but with Red Sawks Nation behind them) participating. Now they get Philly (nowhere near as lovable as the Cubbies) and probably Tampa (13th).

I pretty much tuned out once our Sox were ousted, but I just found it amusing that somewhere a Fox exec was pounding his fist and pulling his hair out.

Personally

I actually kind of like the lower ratings / attendance (outside of the fact this means we can’t spend like the NY Yankees). It’s nice to be a fan of the “2nd team or other team”, especially when we win the world series and they don’t. Probably the reason I like the White Sox more than the Bears even though I’m a bigger football fan. The White Sox might not be “America’s Team” but they’re my team. Not really sure how to explain it without being incredibly lame, but I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels that way.
