They don't NEED to hit homers.

They just decided to start in Boston. Just ’cause. And young guys hitting homers is better than old guys hittting homers. Young guys can still run and play defense. Old guys hitting homers = softball players needing to trot around the bases.

If nothing else, seeing the Rays tee-off on the Red Sox pitching really gives me an appreciation for just how much ass John Danks kicked this year. His great pitching against the Rays (and Twins) in the Cell were highlights, but he was excellent almost the whole season. It wasn’t just small-sample-size theater.

Our Sox played Tampa close for four games. Were the Sox ever down by more than a grand slam all series? Don’t get me wrong — I never had the feeling during the series like the Sox had control, but it still makes you appreciate the fight they were able to put up.
