A Day that will live in infamy
The secret to his success: a slider that broke from the hitter's front shoulder to shin height in the opposite batter's box. The movement was so devastating that television announcer Hawk Harrelson called it "the Doomerang," saying that if Day had enough distance to work with, the pitch would eventually come back to him.
The pitch confused hitters, and often angered them. On four separate occasions hitters charged the mound after striking out. Minnesota Twins infielder Nick Punto was suspended for the duration of the season after throwing his bat at the mound one night in late August. Day was not injured.
In fact, Day never suffered an injury despite his incredible workload. During one stretch when he appeared in 62 consecutive games, Guillen said Day often persuaded him to give him the ball.

a. you are a mythical bird (obvious interpretation of what we’ll refer to as “competent” typists)
b. you are in phoenix, and hence you really don’t have to run in 6 hours because you’re not on edt
c. you have recently undergone a few procedures and now instead of an orlando man you are a phoenix woman

Ellis will receive a two-year deal that will guarantee him between $10 million to $11 million, with incentives and an option for 2011 that could bring the total value of the deal to something close to $18 million, a source told ESPN The Magazine’s Buster Olney.

there's a huge uncertainty discount for what is already a part-time player.
he can’t start everyday. thus, he can’t be paid like he is. this isn’t barry bonds or something. he’s a 125 OPS+ guy at best in a 2/3 role. and that’s a risky at best.
Kenny on the Phones - my favorite GM
I understand that.
And I know Ellis is more desrable because of it. If this is a first indication of the “market” there does not seem to be much drop-off of price from last year, as I thought there might be. So I think Baldelli might get more than postulated, esp. since the FA CF position is thin.
I still think, given another 2-3 months of economic carnage we might see prices come down.

there might be a price decline in the coming years
but right now MLB is flush with cash, which i expect will get used rather than saved. it’s more business savvy to not buy in this market if you project prices will drop the following year(s), especially if you can just sit on the cash you’ve got without losing much to inflation.
nothing gets ‘em wetter than infrequent postings on the city’s second favorite team
right.
i don’t think you’ll see the effect, if any, until next year. plus, so much of mlb’s money is tied into contracts over a number of years, both on the revenue side and the liability side. does cc get less money over a 6 year contract because the economy may be in recession through 2009? i don’t know, especially since the yankees are rather recession proof.
you may see some effect on the lower end free agents this year, which i guess baldelli could be part of.
i’d also say, if you’re a more austere organization, which the white sox are, if prices do decline, they’d be in a position to profit from it due to a stronger balance sheet (i think we’re more likely to just see less increase in contracts than a decline but the point holds).
Kenny on the Phones - my favorite GM
third time the charm for billy?
Instead, he will be just the third player in the Billy Beane era that the A’s have signed beyond his first free-agent season, joining outfielder Jermaine Dye, who got a three-year deal with an option year in 2002, and third baseman Eric Chavez, who signed a six-year, $66-million extension in 2004.

how much hometown discount is built in there?
because that’s a pretty sweetheart deal for the A’s.
nothing gets ‘em wetter than infrequent postings on the city’s second favorite team
i thought he could get about $7M per over 3-4 years.
his injury late in the season may have cut that down some but i’m not sure about that considering the injury shouldn’t affect him at all going forward.
Kenny on the Phones - my favorite GM
Thanks for making my point at least have validity.
Perhaps you might be seeing an adjustment in salaries, just like you did after 2000 (the A-

seems pretty clear from his quotes in what i linked that he wanted to stay in oakland.
a million per, which is what it appears the discount was effectively, sounds about right for the hometown discount.
Kenny on the Phones - my favorite GM
so we're to assume Ellis would be 6.5/yr on the market?
how do they know what kind of discount is being provided before the market has had any time to work? it’s based on some combo of last year’s baseline + money available amongst teams + supply, presumably?
nothing gets ‘em wetter than infrequent postings on the city’s second favorite team

I'm speaking of the price, not the position.
2000 was the top of the stock market. 2007 was also the top of the stock market. (Coincidence that A-Rod contracts mark the peaks? He is the best player with, arguably, the best agent.)

yeah that's true.
MIs undervalued atm? more likely the market just hasn’t seen a talent it deems worth paying for.

you're the one who thinks it's easy to find 2Bs in particular.
and i think the market, at least this offseason, certainly looks to bear that out. as we’ve discussed, the market is boring. a bunch of average players. orlando may well cash in but the rest of them are just fungible.
