Swisher/Josh Fields?
What are these players status in the future? Will KW look past Fields poor 2008 and hand him 3B? Will he try and go for a 3B via trade or FA? Is he going to give Crede another run?
Swisher has a horrible year, has complained to the media about playing time, and is a pretty poor defensive CF, do you think he could be on his way out? Or will KW be patient and hope for a Swisher rebound in 09 and put up with sub standard defense in CF?

JOSH FIELDS UPSIDE IS GOING DOWN
josh fields is an beerbellyball long loopy windup uppercut HR hitting strikeout artist who needs another 2 years at 3B to become as good as he’s gonna get .. for that to change & for him to become a top echelon player wold mean a complete remake of both his stance & swing.. which ain’t happening under GEG WALKER.. or anyone else. he is another player who looked like he was going to be anMLB player from the minors who wasn’t quite adequately prepared & fell on his face.. ala JERRY OWEN, DANNY RICHAR, others..
this experiment is over

SWISHER SHOULD BE GOING A LONG WAYS.. REAL SOON
SWISHER is just lost at the plate.. he has 2 different stances .. that alone should tell you he can be attacked 2 different ways.. GREG WALKER can’f fix him.. because the toughest part of him is his brick head.. far too stupid to figure out what the weaknesses are in his stance & swing.. & the coach is far too stupid to help him..
lost cause

Swisher doesn't have any trade value
Might as well keep him and hope he wakes up. Fields likely doesn’t have a whole lot of trade value, either, but he still might be moved in the event we can find a third baseman in the offseason.

Swisher would be fine as a regular 1B or LF and batting 6th.
The Sox have misused him. The guy’s 27 and he had his first bad season. He’s not a regular CFer or a leadoff/number 2 hitter.
I’d love to see them trade Konerko and make him the 1B and bat him 6th. He’ll have his best season.
Fields is done. I hope they trade him for whatever they can get. He may not be a bust but I don’t think he’ll ever be a good all-around third baseman. Trade him.

I’d love to see them trade Konerko
I’d love to nail Scarlett Johansson

Fields and Swisher
I would guess neither will be starting for the Sox in 2009. I think Swisher has lost Ozzie given that KGJr and D. Wise have passed him on depth chart. I think he’s trade bait for a cheap 4th/5th starter for next year.
With Uribe playing over Fields, I think it’s likely the organization is done with him as well. Ozzie hates his glove and he can’t hit fastballs. I think he’ll start next season rehabbing and at AAA and get moved if he shows any life there. I think the Sox sign a veteran FA 3B not named Joe Crede for 2009.

Ozzie has already come out and said Swish is getting his starting job back next year
just doesn’t think he can rely on him for the playoffs. I’ll take my chances with him having a monster rebound year next season.

speaking of swisher
Sox general manager Kenny Williams said there’s a mechanical flaw in Swisher’s swing. It can be corrected, Williams assured, but not until the off-season.

you see, we don’t have a hitting coach…

Thats just code for
“I made a really bad trade so far, so I will give false hope to saving my ass by making up some BS statement that can still keep people excited about Swisher”.

swisher had a bad year, but i still don't get all the doubters. look at his career. there is no way you can sell him now. his best years are still ahead of him and his previous years are pretty damn good.
the questions surrounding his acquisition were about the sox competitiveness, not his skills. he’s solid. there are very few teams who wouldn’t want swish in their outfield.

Not in center though
But that’s not a knock against the player, just the guy filling out the lineup card and the guy in charge of acquiring players.

“so far”, bad trade.

that sabathia trade looks pretty bad for the indians so far.
that putz laporta hasn’t even played since getting hit in the head. he’s probably dead or something. and cc put his team on his back and hauled them to the playoffs. huge win for the brewers. so far.
clearly what the sox lack is more cowbell.

and, yes, i got your point.
but i rather think there’s something to what he said other than “false hope” and “BS” and “saving his ass”.

yeah...Swisher is young and put .830+ seasons recently in Oakland
It seems unlikely that he’s “done” . He’s hit well before for 2 seasons in a much worse home park. While it’s possible he’ll continue to suck, I think it’s more likely that he’ll rebound.
by hitlesswonder on Oct 5, 2008 8:33 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
question is
Is he still going to play CF? Obviously LF and RF are set with Quentin and Dye
1B is an option, but Konerko is unmovable.
I realize no one likes to “sell low” but what if you guys were also acquiring a player that was “low” like Kevin Kouzmanoff from the Pads.
The guy struggled this year, but still did better than Swisher, is cheap for the next 4 years, and has only played in PETCO, a horible offensive park
by NeifiChicken on Oct 6, 2008 1:27 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
He may end up in CF next year
but with Thome off the books in 2010, Swish could move to a corner OF spot with JD and Kong taking care of DH and 1B (not sure which would be which). This scenario has been posted many times on this site, but I assume you haven’t seen it before.
Swish certainly gives the Sox some flexibility with respect to roster construction, is relatively cheap, and looks to rebound next year offensively. I don’t see the Sox trading him this winter.
BTW, why are you so interested in Swish and Fields, presumably being a Giants fan? To my casual observations (ie reading the SJ Mercury News), the Giants talk like they have 1B/3B covered and that their outfield is set with Rowand (CF), Winn (RF), and whatshisface (LF). I thought that they’re looking for a SS / 2B, 4th OF, and pitching. Could just be the management trying to blow smoke up the casual fan’s ass, but I thought they were going to see how their chips played out next season without making many waves in the winter.

actually, not so much a Giants concern
but I was at one point wondering if Rowand for Swisher made some sense
Kenny Williams seems to love Rowand and Rowand is a legitimate CF unlike Swisher, who belongs in LF. The Giants have two CF candidates in Winn and Lewis and could then play Swisher in Left.
Then I got to thinking about the Padres (I currently live in SD, but am not a Pads fan) and saw their 3B situation between Kouzmanoff and Headley. Headley is a certifiable butcher in LF and should move back to 3B. So the Pads need to find a situation where they can trade the young Kouzmanoff for a LF. Sox made some sense in a Kouzmanoff and Heath Bell for Swisher deal
-Kouz had a down year, Swisher had a down year.
-Both are years from free agency
-Sox might need a young 3B if they have doubts about Fields
-Swisher belongs on a corner/1B/DH spot and all those spots are occupied on the Sox.
-Kouz saves the Sox some money, which they can spend to address other holes
In truth, from a 3rd party perspective, it makes some sense to me, but I wanted to see what Sox fans thought.
Kouzmanoff and Heath Bell for Swisher? I mean, Kouzmanoff might have a poor OBP, but the guy is definitely talented and has respectable numbers when you adjust for his park
by NeifiChicken on Oct 6, 2008 3:39 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Rowand for Swish?
no way in hell do I do that one. I’m a big fan of Rowand, but he’s older, more expensive, and not as good of a hitter. Of course, that’s why you would want the Giants to trade him, but I digress.
First off, the Sox could play Uribe at 3B again next year, so I don’t know that they really have a need at 3B. I’m not familiar with either Kouzmanoff (3B) or Heath Bell (reliever), but after looking over their fangraphs stats, that deal is interesting. I don’t think Kouzmanoff is playing too far below what he is and Bell looks like a good reliever. I would leave it to someone that knows more about those two and how Bell’s stats should be weighted before I made up my mind.

Kouz has a great minor league track record...
and tremendous power. Plan and simple, the guy just lacks the ability to draw walks. I could see him possibly being a 30 HR guy at US Cellular (he hit 23 with PETCO as a home park this year).
Uribe shouldn’t be considered an option for you guys at any cost, although Fields could be the option at 3B if your front office still has faith in him.
As for Rowand-Swisher, I think it’s obviously slanted towards the giants, so I don’t really buy it that much as an idea. More just a function of how much KW loves Rowand and his defense, which probably isn’t enough
