THE NIGHTMAN COMETH FOR THE RAYS

As Joe Buck will mention to you 1000 times tonight, the reason the Phils can clinch at home tonight is because their closer only blew one save this year….at the All-Star Game DUN DUN DUNNNNN.

"I’m gonna rise up, gonna kick a little ass. Gonna kick some ass in the USA. Gonna climb a mountain, gonna sew a flag, gonna fly on an eagle. I’m gonna kick some butt, gonna drive a big truck. I’m gonna rule this world. I’m gonna kick some ass. I’m gonna rise up, gonna kick a little ass. Rock, flag, and eagle!"

The movement was so devastating that television announcer Hawk Harrelson called it "the Doomerang," saying that if Day had enough distance to work with, the pitch would eventually come back to him.

Anyone with a fucked up moral compass watches that show

And judging by the All-Star selection of assholes on this site, 80% of the show’s viewership stems from this blog alone.

Gotta keep running. Like last night, Sonnanstine not going to 2nd and getting the DP costing them the 1st run. Small examples, sure, but they are getting beat by not paying attention to the little things.

Fastball-Curve-Change?

It’s impressive that he can use the change against the lefties in that lineup without getting beat deep. And the righties for that matter. But I think he consistently gets rated at or near the best changes in the league, so it’s not that big a surprise perhaps?

He does have the curve, but he seems to rarely throw it

I’m just trying to think of a more dominant pitcher who throws a higher percentage of just two pitches than Hamels. Santana comes to mind

by 3E8 on Oct 27, 2008 7:47 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

it isn't that rare necessarily

it’s “just” a matter of having two plus pitches that have relatively limited splits, so relievers do this most often. you may have meant amongst starters though? so: sinker pitchers in particular can do this because they throw one pitch so frequently and either a -slider, -change or -slide/change combo shouldn’t yield overly dramatic splits. all but the latter would be two pitch pitchers. otherwise, you’ve got to have some kind of dominant fastball (like Colon back in the day, Schilling for much of his career, The Unit).

Are the Rays paying some kind of homage to the 2008 White Sox offense on a bad day?

I’m flattered, but jeez.

conditions effected everyone there

Upton couldn’t go full out

neither could burrell, then he didn’t get a great throw off, and the water slowed it down before it got to the plate

Just seemed like Burrell didn't make much of that

then again… might just be my perspective from watching a certain team and being conditioned to know that no one on it would have been safe, in good conditions, going in on that play.

why not change the rule

and let any world series (or postseason) game affected by weather be continued the next day, even if it’s not tied. seems a little too important to possibly end the series early due to weather. can you imagine if the sox lost a weather-shortened world series? what if it happened in a game 7?
