Weekly Music Thread: Whatcha Listening To?

Toonder and I (and Keith was there) are beginning a hopefully weekly series of fanposts for the musicophiles up in these parts.  It does seem every time music comes up, a decent discussion follows, so we're hopefully taking that impetus and centralizing it every week in a fanpost.

Unless I've got some particular things I think everyone should listen to or some other bit of writing on the matter, it's largely just going to be a free-for-fall in here.  And even if I have written something, I'd prefer it be like that.  This ain't a music blog, I don't write well about music and it is a fanpost, which means it's here for everyone to get down and e-dance.  And if you do happen to write well about music, keep it coming and be more visible.  It's too bad, but I can't think of anywhere outside of the AV Club that good music writing regularly congregates. Anyway:

Bought recently:

  • Songs: Ohia - Magnolia Electric Co.
  • Of Montreal - Skeletal Lamping
  • Tom Waits - Rain Dogs

Newly Downloaded AND Actually Listened To:

  • Vivian Girls - S/T
  • Dr. Dre - Nothin' But A G Thang

The S:O album I've long had but never bought and I think it's excellent.  Skeletal Lamping is too squirrel-on-crack for me to have figured anything out about it yet and I haven't really sat down and mulled Rain Dogs, though I did listen to it all the way through at 3 am with some friends last week.  There may not be a bigger "OMG I LOVE THAT GUY" out there that I haven't listened to than Tom Waits, so I'm trying to get that under control.  Vivian Girls have listened to a ton of twee and shoegaze and are pretty great if you liked that part of the 80's.  I love that sound, so VG are right up my alley.  Plus I was bitching the other day about the lack of prominent women in rock, particularly rock I care about, so that was momentarily quelled. To further digress: what the hell happened to Patti Smith, Pat Benatar and Debby Harry types? or the Deals?  or even Karen effing O for that matter.  I hope that asian chick that fronted the funk-rock band I saw playing a co-op Halloween party last week makes it big.  Anyone who covers "Are You That Somebody" can just marry me now.

seeing as

it seemed as good a time as any to reinitiate a music fanpost.

so, tell us, what HAVE you been listening to lately.

as for me, recent acquisitions/ipod staples include: the new deerhunter, tv on the radio, bloc party, blitzen trapper, fucked up, vivian girls, and walkmen records, as well as some bon iver, fleet foxes, older mountain goats, elephant 6 staple the olivia tremor control’s mid-nineties debut, and the (about time) complete recordings of johnny cash at folsom prison."

lately

My computer was incapacitated over the summer, so right now I’ve been catching up on summer releases i was eagerly anticipating/ had heard good things about

Man Man – Rabit Habbits – I love this goddamn band. the new album is not quite as good as six demon bag, but is still full of rip-roaring shit stompers. Seeing them live is a highly reccomended activity.

Mountain goats – Their last, like 4 albums. mostly sunset tree. – My friend played “this year” over the summer for me, and I’ve been listening to the works of John Darnielle pretty much since then. Just great lyrics, and I’ve heard some say they don’t like the voice, but I do.

the new Hold Steady Album, stay positive. – more great stuff from a band i already adore. this one sounds more springsteen-y to me, whereas i kinda of didnt feel that as much from their previous springsteen-y releases. “sequestered in Mephis” is excellent.

The walkmen – You and Me – summer 2007 I saw them play taste of randolph street, and they only played 2 of their old songs, and the rest was all new. I was never happy when a band did that before, and I haven’t been since, but I’ve been so excited for this album since then, and the album didnt dissapoint.

The Ruby Suns – sea lion – This is the only new band I’ve really been listening to. saw them at p4k and when they opened for Tilly and the wall over the summer, and they sound so much better on record than live. They only perform with 2 people, so the gang choruses and full brass bands just come over better on record. Just excellent pop music, sang in a language i don’t understand.

And I was listening to “pressure drop” by toots and the maytals while composing this. I also just downlaoded a bunch of tom waits, but ive owned mule variations for years and really liked that. need to get in the mood to listen to the new tv on radio, deerhunter, etc.after i finish catching up on summer.

but usually theres a month or 2 between releases i care about. so I’ll get about 5 new albums i care about, and let them sink in. Then the next batch seems to drop. Oct. 2006 (tvon radio, hold steady, decemberists, thermals) was like that, so was like february of 2007 (arcade fire, modest mouse, ted leo).

I started listening to Man Man as well

Stumbled upon it thanks to iTunes, “People who like this artist also bought…” I think I was looking at Gogol Bordello. I can’t decided how much I like them. Some songs immediately stand out to me as something i like, but others strike me as maybe too weird for my tastes, granted I haven’t given them a proper listening too.

I don’t know why, but they remind me of Vikings…like Vikings at an Irish pub

by jeeves on Oct 30, 2008 12:21 AM CDT up reply actions

my freind described the experience of listening to man man

as “being raped at a carnival.” it seemed oddly appropriate. I mean, some of their songs are just undeniable, like “engrish bwudd” and “van helsing boom box,” but i can totally understand people who don’t like “young einstein on the beach” as much as i do. They ended their encore with that at the bottom lounge last week, and the song is just slightly less than a minute of indecipherable yelling.I was amazed at that choice.

by jeeves on Oct 31, 2008 2:31 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm listening to....

Dexy’s Midnight Runners-Searching For The Young Soul and Too-Rye-Ay
Both very good albums. The first is horn heavy irish soul music with some pretty good organ work. The second album is more strings with less horns. Both have very good songs, more than just Come On Eileen.

Of Montreal-Skeletal Lamping
I was very excited for this album and was disappointed for the most part. The music totally went in the direction I was hoping but it also tends to run together quite a bit. Lyrically, well it’s a bit weird for the sake of weird. Maybe it’ll grow on me.

Mahogany Rush-Maxoom-1972
A pretty strong early 70’s guitar rock offering. Has a lot of Hendrix in it and a little Captain Beyond also. I think it stands up on it’s own though.

The Streets-Everything Is Borrowed
The first full album that I have liked from this guy. Great use of samples. Best songs so far has been “The Way Of The Dodo” and “On The Flip Of A Coin”

Ben Folds-Way To Normal
One of my fav artists delivers again after the first two songs it’s a five star album. Best songs so far “Brainwashed” and “You Don’t Know Me”

Brian Eno & David Byrne-Everything That Happens Will Happen Today
Alot more song orientated than I expected. Best Songs “Strange Overtones” and The River"

Anything By Phantom Plant
Great band that writes wonderful pop tunes. Check out Raise the Dead or The Guest

Also Delta Spirit, Man Man, Kristoffer Ragnstam, Catfish Haven, 31knots, Dr. Dog, Girl Talk, Roxy Music, Dennis Wilson, Midlake, and The Magic Numbers

Was the band that you saw do “Are You That Somebody” called Gossip, there’s a good live version of that song on ITunes by them.

The Streets is interesting...

I’m not a huge fan but he falls into an “interesting” category, which (for me) means he’s different (a good thing) but it’s not something that I’ve really taken to. In any case he pours his heart out in some songs (the one about his father/religion, IIRC) and “The Irony of it All” is a funny/sad/tragic, however you want to view that type of thing.

I’ll have more later, when Rock Band 2 and learning about game theory become less of a priority.

Wow, didn't even know there's a new Ben Folds album out

I’m downloading it as we speak!

As far as Of Montreal, I love the new album. My first play through, I was blown away in a bad sense. I didn’t really like it and was kinda disappointed. I instantly adored the song An Eluardian Instance and really liked Nonpareil of Favor, but other than that I was mostly meh towards it. Luckily for me, at least with regards to the album, I had back-to-back-to-back midterms Mon, Tues, Wed, so I pretty much listened to that album non-stop, and I really like it now. Once I got used to the Girl Talk – esque vignettes that make up each song and the obscene lyrics I was able to appreciate it a lot more.

I feel like maybe he went too strong with the “Georgie Fruit” alter ego, which probably caused my initial dislike of it. I do really like the wide variety of types of music that he covers, especially the Prince sounding St. Exquisite’s Confessions. Again sort of liek Girl Talk in all the genres he touches upon.

Comet, what are your thoughts on Delta Spirit and Dr. Dog? This random guy I met upon hearing of my music tastes rec’d them to me, and I haven’t quite gotten around to listening to them.

by jeeves on Oct 30, 2008 12:30 AM CDT up reply actions

....

The Delta Spirit album isn’t bad first three tracks are great then it kinda trails off. Dr. Dog is pretty much awesome IMO. They are major Beatles fans and not afraid to show it. Great harmonies top-notch songwriting. Easy Beat (2005) We All Belong(2007) and Fate(2008) are all amazing albums.
only We All Belong has a couple song that aren’t my favorites.

Best Songs:
Easy Beat The World May Never Know, Oh No, Today
We All Belong The Girl, Ain’t It Strange, The Way The Lazy Do, We All Belong
Fate The Breeze, The Old Days, The Ark, From, The Beach

i don't agree at all that it's soulless or that it requires drugs to enjoy

it’s campy pop that makes plenty of homage. i generally object to the concept of “soul/no soul” which is really just an authenticity argument. authenticity is a mostly fradulent idea that limits and condemns what a lot of people get lots of value out of. not to mention the anti-gay streak that has historically tinged the concept of the authentic.

well spoken colin. but in the realm of music, authenticity is a bit more touchy. re: black musicians who never got their cut is what i’m alluding too.

by onlysoxfaninboston on Oct 30, 2008 11:21 AM CDT up reply actions

i'm with you there

the history of pop music being “whitened” for mass appeal and the continuing presence of “cross over appeal” suggests that race is more than merely tangential to the authenticity argument. the idea, hopefully, is to get rid of the value judgments about the people who listen to X (the variable, not the band). without those, the merit of the music should find the audience it deserves eventually.

what did you say about X!?

more simply, i’m just saying authenticity would be less of an issue today if those black musicians who wrote the music back in the day, the music that helped spawn pretty much everything, actually got paid..

I'll omit "soullless."

I ignored that adjective. I generally only reserve it for the pop factories.

Now, having never done drugs, I can’t verify that you need drugs to enjoy it. But I would say my mind would have to be in an altered state to change my opinion. I don’t see how you can refute that one.

Considering a couple of my favorite bands are considered knockoffs of the authentic (Hold Steady for Springsteen/Pretenders, Flogging Molly for the Pogues), it might serve you well to lighten up a bit.

i was kind of talking over you jim, despite having replied to your comment.

and i’m really not at all taking offense to someone not liking a band i like. i’m perturbed mostly by the attitude i’ve been outlining just because it’s so ridiculous to express genuine dislike of someone thanks to music they like. it’s like getting pissed that someone likes the way anchovies taste.

i mean "soulless" was at the heart of it, but there's more too.

but the idea that barnes is “trying to be” david bowie is pretty ridiculous. he’s adopting a persona in the same way that bowie did (it’s glammy), but adopting a persona in order to perform, particularly to do something weird and out there, is a tradition that goes back to the birth of Western theater. whereas you seem to find that merely to be not your taste, there was a very obvious condescension at work in the original comment.

Making blanket statements on a person or their association with some kind of subculture based on one band = douchey.

Getting up in arms and spending lots of words trying to refute it = slightly douchey. In respects that it’ll probably be fruitless.

A solid mix of house/trance, Bollywood, and gangster rap

I accidentally listened to Coldplay a few days ago, so there was that. Going to the Lupe Fiasco concert on Friday at the Congress Theater, should be a fun time before I go out and see 10000 guys dressed up as Joker thinking they are cool.

"I’m gonna rise up, gonna kick a little ass. Gonna kick some ass in the USA. Gonna climb a mountain, gonna sew a flag, gonna fly on an eagle. I’m gonna kick some butt, gonna drive a big truck. congress theater is a cool venue

i used to like lupe fiasco, but then someone pointed out a really annoying characteristic of his — he makes a really high pitched wheezing sound every time he inhales, and once you’re aware of it, it pretty much becomes the only thing you hear. similar effect as someone interjecting “like” every other word into what they’re saying. sometimes my girlfriend does that. i stop listening to what she’s saying and start counting how many times she says “like.” maybe that’s just a personal problem.

but with lupe, i hope he doesn’t do it live. once you hear it, you can’t unhear it!

I tend to prefer the fine production, his enthusiasm for a live performance, and lyrics I like over how he inhales. Plus, the breathing is also there on his CDs, so you kind of just get used to it if you are so inclined to.

the sea and cake make albums whenever they fucking feel like it, they don't grind it out

actually my mom told me about the french band, lo cor de la plana. she saw them at the cultural center for chicago international music fest and said that they were coming to boston. in short, they blend in a lot of different musics and hate to say it, but fit the putamayo stereotype.

so i saw them – they are amazing – and i bought the cd at the merch table. i mentioned to the guy at the table (who was one of the members) that my ma gave me the word about them. he teased me lightly because my mom apparently spoke to him after the show – she left that detail out to me – and told him that she would encourage me to check them out.

I am throwing back to the good ol' days angsty days here.

I have been unable to remove Blind Melon’s “Soup” from my cd player for the last couple weeks, I’d say. Was loading a ton of old cd’s into my iTunes and stumbled upon its greatness.

I love returning to old albums after some time, and all the music feels so familiarly fresh and comforting and takes you back into a mindset, and even the smells of your life when that album was released. Even more importantly, though, is how I interpret it now in my life – and how the songs mean something entirely different to me than they did when I was 10.

Nothing quite like Shannon Hoon’s voice – or the direction they took on Soup, from their debut album.
The anniversary of his death was last week…..one of the greatest overdose tragedies of the 90’s.

If you don’t have it already, you must own this album. It is one of the few that I consider near-perfection – track 1-14. Typically I find that albums teeter off towards the end – like all the good stuff is at the front, and most people will be gone by the end anyway, so fuck it!

Not with Soup. Greatness through and through. Every single track.

No Hoon. Not ever. Loser. (Kidding, HSA.)

Listening to new Beck incessantly (my 5 year old loves “Gamma Ray”). And with the market action the last year, "Volcano"’s sullenness suits my mood more and more. Very interesting that Beck (BECK!) seems to be questioning the God thing throughout the album. Getting older ain’t pretty if it’s you. Listening to it is fun.

Also: Tom Petty’s Full Moon Fever (“Face In The Crowd” is one of the best songs ever). The kid likes “Alright For Now” – says it’s like a lullaby. Dylan “Blood on the Tracks”. Los Lobos “How Will the Wolf Survive”. Stuff like that.

You guys are too angry. Do like HSA and mellow out.

I agree on the artists you mentioned (I’ll beat my dad to the “Kiko and the Lavender Moon” rec for Los Lobos) but don’t know that Petty album – will check out. I haven’t picked up the new Beck, but I am a big fan of most every album he’s ever made – no matter how different they all are. I intend to someday….once I pry that awful Hoon from my player and all.

an adolescent treatment center for the first 18 months I was here – 18 bed unit, kids 14-21 y/o. One of my most vivid memories is “Appetite” being a constant source of conversation re: triggers for the kids to want to use, and the arguments we’d have with them about why we would NOT play the album (no CD’s then, kids) on the unit. (You could not get away from “Appetite” – the whole world was listening to it.) It was a great source of discussion, as it represented a very powerful example of what they’d be facing after treatment.

no, their first and only proper album

the actual title is Burritos, Inspiration Point, Fork Balloon Sports, Cards In The Spokes, Automatic Biographies, Kites, Kung Fu, Trophies, Banana Peels We’ve Slipped On and Egg Shells We’ve Tippy Toed Over, which there’s no way i could possibly remember off the top of my head. it says “schmap’n schmazz” on the cd, so it’s often referred to by that name. it’s long out of print, but all of the songs are included on Analphabetapolothology.

anyway, they were legends of the illinois indie rock scene in the mid-90’s—saw them at a house party in urbana of all places and they blew my mind—and the members went on to form a number of other good to great bands like joan of arc, american football, owen, and owls. i particularly recommend owen if you like american football.

Finally some free time to put some words down and enter the fray

New(ish) stuff (for me):

The Enemy (UK) – We’ll Live and Die in These Towns – they kick a good amount of ass — not as much as Arctic Monkeys, but that’s nothing to be ashamed of.

Shugo Tokumaru – Exit. I saw a review of this album Pitchfork and gave it a listen. He’s a Japanese indie (sigh… I really try to avoid using that word, as it’s so vague and broad that it’s not terribly descriptive anymore) type with a really neat and very enjoyable sound. Of course, all of his lyrics are Japanese, so I can’t judge from that end but the sound alone pulled me in. His music puts a smile on my face.

The Redwalls – (Self titled album). I’m surprised that I’ve never seen (or can’t remember) seeing them mentioned here, seeing that they’re from Chicago. Then again, they’re rather Beatles-y, and those guys don’t get talked about much (around here) outside of the occasional hoodie “those guys are fukin’ wankers” rant. I really ought to see them live one of these days, although I’m not sure that they’re music will translate that well live.

Then there are my constants, shit that I usually go through regularly, including (but not limited to)…

Arctic Monkeys – Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not kicks so much fucking ass. What a great album.

The Strokes – Probably my favorites. I’m awaiting their 2009 album.

Wutang (seriously, is there a better rap/hip-hop album than Enter the Wutang? Okay — that’s my bad for trying to engage folks in the pissing contest that is “this album is oh so much better than that one” — just give me an album that’s comparably great. Ready to Die from Notorious is good and so is Paid in Full by the aforementioned Eric B and Rakim is also quality, but in my mind not as good throughout as EtW).

Anything and everything Jack White – I only (regrettably) saw a little bit of him at Lollapalooza, but he’s a really good artist.

Murder by Death – Who Will Survive and What Will Be Left of Them? is another one of my favorite albums. A friend of mine introduced me to them freshman year and I’ve enjoyed them ever since.

I have to say thanks for the Deerhunter tip, I gave that a few listens and am enjoying it. On the other hand, I’ve now listened to TVotR’s Return to Cookie Mountain and still can’t totally get into it. I plan on giving Dear Science a try, but I can’t say it’s a priority.

i don't think you'll find any arguments on this site against wu-tang

definitely not from me. have you listened to the cd MM mentioned like two posts ago? solid as hell

The movement was so devastating that television announcer Hawk Harrelson called it "the Doomerang," saying that if Day had enough distance to work with, the pitch would eventually come back to him.

we've got similar tastes

really liked whatever people say that i am, bought favourite worst nightmare a month or so ago, haven’t had a chance to listen to it. also strokes are probably one of my favorite bands – wasn’t in love with first impressions, but thought there were some quality tracks on it, just not up to par with room on fire or is this it.

i bought the TVotR albums and havent fully absorbed them yet and have been too lazy to go out and get deerhunter but its next on the list.

In no particular order, all if these cds are better.

Mobb Deep – Hell on Earth.
2Pac – all eyez on me
Nas – Illmatic
Jay-z – Blueprint
Kanye West – College Dropout
Wu-Tang Clan – 36 chambers

these 6 cds are all better than Enter the Wu. I love WU as much as the next guy, but there is no way in hell Enter the WU is the best rap album ever.

Seeing as how you included the CD that you are trying to diminish in your list

I’ll say void.

My personal taste I’d take these albums over 36 Chambers.
Jay-Z—Reasonable Doubt
Nas—Illmatic (Can’t be a professed lover of hip-hop if you don’t enjoy this 45 minutes of bliss)
Outkast-Aquemini
Reflection Eternal (Talib Kweli & Mos Def)-Train of Though
The Notorious B.I.G.—Ready to Die

WELL YOU'RE AN IDIOT MY TASTE IS BETTER THAN YOURS

I didn’t like that CD, mainly because the only good thing was Andre 3000’s part. I’ve always had a love for Aquemini, I dunno it just sits well with me.
