this is what happens when you lose the world series.
I do know one thing though. I’m not giving Maddon a pass on anything anymore. He has shown that despite how he speaks (very intelligently) and the reputation he has garnered through the media, he is an awful strategist. Nothing in the postseason provided any evidence to the contrary.

i wonder what the perception of fukudome would be if he’d been put in center from the start? anyone who starts that hot and then craters will get some serious stick but his overall production would be a whole lot more acceptable if he wasn’t in a corner.

the projection systems kind of disagreed with you on that. but whatever - it's a projection from japan to here. difficulties abound.
as for why he wasn’t in center, there was that whole thing about “will he be able to play there in america?” and, of course, felix pie. and when the pie experiment bombed, the cubs did the totally logical thing and signed that great defender jim edmonds instead of moving fukudome there. against apparently all odds, that move worked out handsomely. in his limited time in center, it seems like fukudome was fine. of course, another year to his age, a larger sample size, etc. may moot that. $12M is an awful lot for a fourth outfielder. as we recall, the sox supposedly had the superior offer to fukudome so KW may well have dodged a bullet.

well he certainly showed very little pop, less than i expected
but i thought his OBP was the main attraction and the fact he could play center. what the cubs did with him makes very little sense to me. and why wouldn’t you want to play center instead of right?

this was probably one of the clearest cases of pitchers figuring him out and a player failing to make any adjustment whatsoever that i can recall.
it was fucking comical to watch pitchers just do the same thing to him and him just do the same thing and him just do the same walk back to the dugout.
he's stubborn. and lacks discipline. and i hope he drowns in front of his children. but I’ll have to document all that when I see him next year, assuming he stays here, which he probably will. i don’t wanna be dissin’ without substance.

I have a love/hate thing with their writing, sometimes their thoughts on the league are absolutely spot on and so unique, yet other times I feel like they (especially Shoals/Friedman whatever the hell he wants to be called) just try wayy too hard to be “different” or just edgy. But, it’s still a good site on the vibe of the game, and how the NBA has the most eclectic group of personalities out of any major sport.
