Saturday Night NL Playoff Action
Since the Sox have the day off, I thought you might want an open thread to discuss the games today. Or Kimbo.

Chicago White Sox Examiner — Your what hurts?
I made the trip for the Buffalo game
I figured it might be my last chance to watch a Top 5 Mizzou team. Hopefully they can hold onto the ball better tonight.
Chip, chip, chip, chip.
Sox Machine
Unfortunately, this may be true...
Which is why I’m enjoying this season as much as I can. I’m just lucky to be a student here through all of this.
I take it you went to Mizzou, then—what years were you there?
Chicago White Sox Examiner — Your what hurts?
'00-'04
I went to the game where Mizzou snapped the 25-year losing streak against NU in 2003. Best game I’ve ever been to.
Chip, chip, chip, chip.
Sox Machine
Do you have a piece of the goalpost?
Man, that game today was amazing. I really hope some Mizzou fan at the game yelled “WE’RE TAKING THE GOALPOSTS TO HARPO’S” like somebody did at the Cotton Bowl.

Dodger envy...
2 outs, Martin on 1st. manny comes up. base hit. Martin takes 3rd. Loney comes up, double down the line = 2 runs. Simple, right?
Just swing baby!

The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.
who will do the paperwork if joey leaves?
If White Sox bench coach Joey Cora gets the Mariners’ managing job, as has been speculated, that would hurt the White Sox, an official from another American League team opined. The official said of Cora: “He’s very good. He does all of their paperwork and all of their spring training stuff.”

Maybe Swisher can
And he can still be head cheerleader too
"We're the bitch of Chicago, we're the Chicago bitch."
so no one else would be able to do the "spring training stuff"?
Buddy Bell couldn’t do it? I would be happy to see Cora get a head coaching job, of course I am selfish and want him to stay with us but that is his decision.

New Fans--Welcome
The White Sox have just added many new fans. These frustrated Cubs fans should be welcomed by us. They do not need any more disrespect. As long as they are truly committed to the White Sox and not to the Cubs, let us show them how it feels to be part of a team that has winning as its first priority.

No team can match the White Sox combination of power, pitching and experience. Certainly not the Rays. White Sox in 5

"No matter what happens, we'll always have that in our pocket"
Lady & Gents,
Let’s go out there today and let’s get the ball rolling toward an improbable 3 game comeback.
We were just as dominating at home as they were this season (almost), so I see no reason why we can’t push this to a game 5, at a minimum.
John Danks, Your table is ready
Matchup: Rays (97-65) at White Sox (89-74), 3:07 p.m. CT, TBS
Probable Starters: Matt Garza (184 2/3 IP, 4.05 RA, 1.24 WHIP, 128 K) vs. John Danks (195, 3.42, 1.23, 159)
Pythagorean Record: Tampa Bay, 92-70 (774 RS, 671 RA); Chicago, 89-74 (811 RS, 729 RA)
Hit List Rankings: Tampa Bay, #3; Chicago, #10
Series Favorite: Rays, 89.5% (Up 2-0)
Prospectus: The White Sox have been exposed in the first two games of this series as a slow team unable to produce runs except via the long ball. Now they face elimination, and will have to “fight like a cat,” as manager Ozzie Guillen put it, if they want to have a shot at spoiling the Rays’ storybook season. Chicago does get to come back to US Cellular Field this afternoon, where it posted the fourth-best home winning percentage in baseball during the regular season. The Sox will also have Danks on the hill, who is coming off a superb performance in Chicago’s one-game divisional playoff win over Minnesota, and who pitched very well versus the lefty-vulnerable Rays this year: a 1.86 RA and 20/3 K/BB in 19 1/3 innings over three starts. Garza, on the other hand, has scuffled a bit down the stretch of the season, failing to throw more than five innings in any of his final three starts, and his road RA this season (4.83) was over a run and a half higher than his home mark (3.28).
The Rays could get Carlos Pena back in the lineup today, as the slugging first baseman expects to play after missing most of Game One and all of Game Two due to blurred vision resulting from a scratched cornea he suffered while at home. If Pena does play, there is a good chance that Tampa Bay could put forth a batting order featuring its full complement of offensive talents for the first time all season: the Rays have not played a single game this year with Pena, Evan Longoria, Carl Crawford, and Rocco Baldelli all in the lineup at the same time, but that could happen tonight. Baldelli missed most of the season due to his mitochondrial myopathy, returning in mid-August just a game after Crawford had been felled with a torn tendon in his finger, and three games after Longoria went down with a fractured wrist. Crawford didn’t get back into the batter’s box until this series, but has fallen right into his swing with a 3-for-8 showing and two RBI, while Longoria’s two blasts in Game One removed any lingering worries about his wrist. Anyone watching Baldelli race around the bases to score from first on Dioner Navarro’s pop-fly double in the eighth inning of Game Two had to be impressed with the progress that the outfielder has made in battling against his rare fatigue-inducing disease. It’s remarkable that the Rays were able to win 97 games while having their top batsmen miss so much time, and frightening for the rest of the playoff contenders that all of their offensive talent is finally healthy.
clearly what the sox lack is more cowbell.
line 'em up
OC, SS; AJ, C; Dye, RF; Thome, DH; PK, 1B; Griffey, CF; Ramirez, 2B; Wise, LF; Uribe, 3B. Danks pitching.
also an fyi for those of you holding tix for tomorrow:
Game Time
If the White Sox and Red Sox both win today, tomorrow’s game time will move to 7:07 p.m. to accommodate the TBS telecast (we’d be the only game in the country).

since this is potentially the last game of the season, fuck why not have swish in lf?

i didn't say anything about "bringing" anyone in. they can be found anywhere.
swisher and his stellar sub .300 OBP in the last three months probably shouldn’t be in the current conversation. especially against righties.

i'd really like to know what is wrong with him.
i can’t see whatever “mechanical” issue KW says he has. doesn’t mean it’s not there, of course, but i don’t see what it is. part of it is probably in his head. he looks like he’s going up there banking on being able to work the count and get a walk. afraid to swing.

i'll agree with you on swish's inability to pull the trigger right now. that seems to be the issue to me.

so. using perfect hindsight.
was the sabathia for laporta trade worth it for milwaukee?
clearly what the sox lack is more cowbell.
Bet they sold a lot more tickets. Sure.
(We’ll see in a year or two.)
No team can match the White Sox combination of power, pitching and experience. Certainly not the Rays. White Sox in 5
yeah.
the question is a bit of a no brainer with perfect hindsight because, duh, it looks like they’re going to get bounced in four games. but i think it was good to roll the dice. sold more tix. showed the fans you were willing to roll the dice (after failing to do so last year and likely missing the playoffs because of it). i know some brewers fans and they really liked the move and (this was in a vacuum and not the current reality) but they largely seemed okay with the move even if the brewers were to be knocked out in the first round. we’ll see if they’re singing that tune tonight or when laporta becomes a star.
clearly what the sox lack is more cowbell.
Plus MIL gets draft picks and they seem to know what to do with those
Even in hindsight, I think it’s worth it for them. They made the playoffs, sold some tickets, get some picks, and it’s not like laporta plays a position they were thin at.

I have no idea how to quantify the national exposure or what the move tells
potential free agents (and how it affects their behavior in their willingness to sign – hell, the Royals got Meche, sothere are always guys all about the $) but it looksto be an immediate positive. Unless the rental takes you all the way it’s always tough to justify it in the near term.

At my boyfriend's parents' house last night, I got into a huge argument with his dad, when I asked him to put on the Cubs game.
I had the game on casually in the background, just to check in, see some plays, meh…
He could not believe that I wasn’t rooting for a Cubs win. I wasn’t being a dick about it, and cheering loudly for their demise; but I did express that I was hoping they lost.
Being from San Pedro, he was raised with the mindset that you root for your city, and even if the Sox are my team, the Cubs should then be my second team.
We argued for about 20 minutes, and I eventually got him to agree to disagree – we are of different cultures. He could not possibly get his head around the rivalry of the teams.
I know there are plenty of Sox/Cubs fans that loathe the other’s team. And I know there are plenty who don’t really care, and would root for the other, should they be competing… I don’t hold people at fault for thinking one way or the other… but I think part of my own take (in really disliking the Cubs) comes from the history of ridicule from Cubs fans – part of my wanting them to fail, comes from my not wanting Cubs fans to have bragging rights. I feel like this would fuck up my sphere of being in some way.
Anyway, long story short….am I a total asshole for not wanting the Cubs to win?
