When is the last time we scored morethan 4 runs?

Seems like a long time ago. 1, 4, and 2 the previous 3 games. 5 is a nice number.

No team can match the White Sox combination of power, pitching and experience. Certainly not the Rays. White Sox in 5

Watching Danks these past two games (and the whole season, too (obviously)) has been wonderful

He looked gassed in the sixth and completely cooked in the 7th — I wasn’t terribly fond of Ozzie’s decision to let him start the seventh. And I have to reiterate my worries for Danks next season, but I guess that’s a bridge that should be crossed when we actually get to that point and not now.

I’m also glad that we’ll get to see Floyd for one more outing. Watching him (and, subsequently, his peripherals) get better and better over the second half has been as much fun as anything else. And, as it’s been, if they win, awesome — another do-or-die game where the winner moves on and the loser goes home would kick ass. If they don’t, it’s been a great ride.

Go get ’em, Gavin — your big hairy balls are our only hope.

starting pitching

This team has it (atleast 1-3). With that, they have a chance to advance. They are now 3-0 in elimination games, so I’m feeling optimistic about tomorrow.

And if the Sox rally to win in the ALDS, they might regain the services of slugger Carlos Quentin. Quentin took batting practice for the first time since suffering a right wrist fracture on Sept. 1 and hit several line drives.

“It felt pretty good,” Quentin said. “That’s the best I could expect.”

Jerry Manuel's Words of Wisdom
"What has been done in the past is that you get so many statistical people together — they put so many stats on paper — and they say, ‘Well, if you do this and you score this many runs, you do this that many times, you’ll be in the playoffs,’ " Manuel said Saturday in a conference call after the Mets announced that he had agreed to a two-year contract. "That’s not really how it works. And that’s what we have to get away from."

The Mets missed the playoffs for a second consecutive season in large part because of their consistent inability to perform what Manuel viewed as essential tasks for a team with championship aspirations. He said the Mets had many necessary players in place, advocating that they retain the team’s core (José Reyes, David Wright and Carlos Beltrán). But Manuel also agreed with General Manager Omar Minaya and the chief operating officer, Jeff Wilpon, who seemed to allude last week that the team was lacking some intangible element.

"You don’t see a lot of guys that have statistical numbers play well in these championship series," Manuel said. "What you see is usually the little second baseman or somebody like that carries off the M.V.P. trophy that nobody expected him to do. That’s because he’s comfortable in playing that form of baseball, so therefore when the stage comes, it’s not a struggle for him."

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/05/sports/baseball/05manuel.html

The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.

last 5 WS mvps— lowell, eckstein, dye, manny, beckett. last 5 NLCS mvps—- holliday, suppan, oswalt, pujols, ivan rodriguez. last 5 ALCS mvps— beckett, polanco, konerko, ortiz, mariano.

well, two out of those 15 were 2nd basemen that don’t have “statistical numbers”. i wouldn’t call that “usually”.

i’m sure he can also get minaya to trade pelfrey or some other loser for erstad.

I hope no one gets offended, because it’s not meant to be offensive, but I really do call him the black Ross Gload. He’s the African-American Ross Gload, there you go. Ross Gload is so versatile and he’s such a great hitter. But a guy like Dewayne Wise, you’re almost in awe, wondering why this guy is not playing everyday somewhere. This guy was about to go play Independent ball and he’s helping us win postseason games.

The blackout was a last minute promotion

The towels were black hand towels, nothing printed on them. The game yesterday and today were already a sold promotion to US Cell and United. So they had to go with what was printed and ready. Brook realized it loses some of the blackout effect in an interview he did.. but wanted to keep the blackout idea going. He felt the contrast would be good though.

Black towels look like bats

Which, to me, is far more effective since bats are freaky things.

Of course, they could give a set of white and black towels and add to the home field advantage.

To the contrary, at both Blackout 1 & 2 the insanity never let up. There's was nobody

sitting on their hands (unlike at a certain northside shrine I won’t mention).

Really, the Sox can play pretty loose, since they’ve achieved way beyond expectations, so if (I mean, when) they win today, the Rays will be the team with the tight sphincter, not the Sox.

Loosey goosey is how they play it
There was no screaming, yelling or jumping up and down. There wasn’t even any music. Players spoke in quiet, hushed tones. The only noise came from the clubhouse televisions, which were tuned to the Red Sox and Angels. If you didn’t know any better, you would have thought the White Sox lost.

That’s by design. Win or lose, before the game or after, June or October, this team is the same.

“Guys are happy being here because there’s no pressure on anyone,” said winning pitcher John Danks, who gave up three runs and seven hits over 6 2/3 innings. “No one acts like this is do or die, guys are playing cards up to 30 minutes before the game, we had the football games on … guys approach it like it was a game in June. And that takes the pressure off a bit.”

"I’m gonna rise up, gonna kick a little ass. Gonna kick some ass in the USA. Gonna climb a mountain, gonna sew a flag, gonna fly on an eagle. I’m gonna kick some butt, gonna drive a big truck. Matchup: Rays (97-65) at White Sox (89-74), 4:05 p.m. CT, TBS
Probable Starters: Andy Sonnanstine (193 1/3 IP, 4.89 RA, 1.29 WHIP, 124 K) vs. Gavin Floyd (206 1/3, 4.67, 1.26, 145)
Pythagorean Record: Tampa Bay, 92-70 (774 RS, 671 RA); Chicago, 89-74 (811 RS, 729 RA)
Hit List Rankings: Tampa Bay, #3; Chicago, #10
Series Favorite: Rays, 76.2% (Up 2-1)
Prospectus: With a win yesterday, the White Sox kept Chicago from being swept clean out of the playoffs in both leagues, salvaging some pride in the Second City. The victory was Chicago’s third straight at home when a loss meant certain elimination, after the Sox beat the Tigers in last Monday’s makeup game and then the Twins in Tuesday’s one-game playoff for the division title. Floyd pitched well in that game against Detroit, giving up one earned run in six innings to pick up his team-leading 17th win of the season. This will be his first career outing against the Rays. Sonnanstine pitched the best game of his career against the White Sox back on April 19, a complete-game three-hit shutout at Tropicana Field, but did not fare as well in his next two outings versus Chicago, giving up 19 hits and seven runs combined in 12 innings.

Floyd will likely be tested on the basepaths tonight by the fleet-footed Rays. Tampa Bay led the majors this year with 142 stolen bases, and Floyd was by far the easiest starting pitcher in the majors to run on: he gave up 37 steals, 10 more than the next-highest total (Jair Jurrjens allowed 27). Just five runners were thrown out when attempting to run on Floyd this year, leaving opponents with an excellent 88 percent success rate against him, the highest for any AL starter against whom there were at least 10 attempts. While Floyd is extremely slow to the plate, one of Sonnanstine’s strengths is his ability to completely eliminate the running game. While Chicago stole three bases in yesterday’s win, but it’s virtually assured that they won’t be able to duplicate that feat today, for Sonnanstine had a base swiped on his watch by just one baserunner all year in his 32 starts (the lucky thief was Texas’s Ian Kinsler, in a May 27 game). Three runners attempting to steal on Sonnanstine were gunned down, and his opponents’ 25 percent stolen-base success was the lowest against any pitcher qualified for the ERA title, a remarkable feat considering he’s a right-hander. Just three other qualified starters gave up only one steal this year: Kenny Rogers, Braden Looper, and Roy Oswalt.

Both bullpens have been strong so far, with the Rays’ relief corps giving up one run in 8 1/3 frames over the three games, and Chicago’s one run in seven. The White Sox rank just ahead of the Rays in the Secret Sauce index, primarily because of their large edge in closer WXRL, with Bobby Jenks at 4.46 wins added, and Troy Percival at 1.67. That is deceiving, however, because while Percival led the team in saves during the regular season, he is not on the team’s playoff roster due to injury and performance issues. Substitute in Dan Wheeler, the team’s current stopper, and the Rays move from 21st to 16th in closer WXRL, and vault ahead of the White Sox in Secret Sauce. Wheeler isn’t even the Rays’ best reliever, however, as both J.P. Howell and Grant Balfour rank ahead of him in WXRL and ARP; Balfour finished the season as baseball’s second-best reliever by ARP behind Mariano Rivera, and Howell was seventh in WXRL and eighth in ARP. Thanks mostly to those three, the Rays’ pen ranked first in the majors with over 15 wins added above replacement one year after it ranked last with -1.75.

clearly what the sox lack is more cowbell.

No, we need to get rid of Jenks.

He is in a serious decline and has does not get through innings without allowing baserunners, or occasionally, runs. Sure, he saves 90+% of the games he’s called upon to save, but Todd Jones and Joe Borowski closed successfully for awhile…4.46 wins added is chump change. Trade him now – his value will never be higher…

And Sonnanstine will hold those non-existent runners close, while Floyd will be experiencing a track meet. I’d not bother going to the game today. It all lines up for unhappiness. The Rays are too good.

;)

PS Why doesn’t anyone in the “media” mention the actual 4-0 elimination game record? Huh? I smell a national conspiracy.

Nate Silver sucks

and he’s joining the mainstream media. This is from this week’s Barron’s newspaper:

OBAMA’S SURGE BEGAN IN ADVANCE OF the first candidates’ debate on Sept. 26, ruling out that event as a defining moment. Shortly before the debate, statistician Nate Silver wrote on his political Website, Fivethirtyeight.com: Obama is in the strongest position in the polls he’s been in all year. Silver, a young man famous for his work with baseball statistics, emerged this year as a leading expert on presidential polling. Although he unabashedly supports Obama, his mathematics embraces neutrality. He carefully weighs all of the major political polls to produce a snapshot of current voter sentiment and to predict voters’ behavior on Nov. 4.

By Silver’s calculations, Obama has the lead now in so many key states that it’s hard to imagine him losing all of them by election day, even with Joe Biden as his running mate. Silver’s Website attracts more than 200,000 visitors a day, including me. Recently, I’ve also begun visiting the Princeton Election Consortium site, maintained by Professor Sam Wang and statistician Andrew Ferguson (http://election.princeton.edu). It, too, tries to reduce multiple polls into simple cross-sections of voter sentiment. Unlike Silver, however, Wang and Ferguson are looking at the here and now, not trying to predict the outcome.

I didn't know he was doing this stuff now.

This perfectly explains why someone I know (BP reader) is suddenly an “expert” in election polls this year!

P.S. Doesn’t NS know you need to know the exact location, velocity and direction of every particle in the Universe to accurately predict the outcome of today’s game?

and the colours
Whistlejacket was foaled in 1749, and his most famous victory was in a race over four miles for 2000 guineas at York in August 1759. Stubbs’s huge picture was painted in about 1762 for the 2nd Marquess of Rockingham, Whistlejacket’s owner and a great patron of Stubbs. According to some writers of the period the original intention was to commission an equestrian portrait of George III, but it is more likely that Stubbs always intended to show the horse alone rearing up against a neutral background.

My apologies

In the Staties the 7 years war is called the French and Indian War, even though that war was fought all over the globe.

disgusting stuff

my mate fat paul, suffers from really bad piles and his GP told him to eat Weetabix and they made them worse. he had to have them operated on in the end. They shine a laserbeam up your arsehole and burn them off, a a bit like Sean connery in that film Goldfinger but the other way up. Only a local anathesthetic too so you can smell the flesh burning.
he couldn’t sit down for a week, when he came in the pub the night after we got the landlord to play ‘Ring of Fire’ by Johnny Cash at full volume.

Sounds like you and Weetabix are old friends.

20-and-a-quarter years of age.

I can grow a pretty dirty (and boy do I mean dirty) ‘stache, though — similar to the one below, I’d guess, if I actually grew it out for an extended period of time.

Anybody know...

the amount of money the Sox will get (approx) for making the playoffs? They do get some ‘lump some’ share of cash for making the ALDS, in addition to revenues, correct?

(I know I should do my own fucking research, but I seem to recall the numbers being posted either here or at BTF recently and thought someone might know off the top of their head. Plus I have class in six minutes.)

I’m also inquiring because this free agent class looks to be pretty freaking good, and it’d be nice if the Sox could have some cash available to go after a good fit.

Relatively (and/or comparatively) speaking, it looks pretty good

although I doubt the Sox are going to be going after the Tiexera (sp) or CC. Ben Sheets intrigues me a bit (if it’d be possible to get him on a shorter deal) as does Derek Lowe, although both could very well be out of the Sox’ price (and years) range.

I also forgot about OC coming off the books, so with that and the Sox’ playoff run, they should have enough to go after a premier player (should they choose — I’m not necessarily advising that they go the FA route as most times the prices there aren’t worth it).

by CWSKeith on Oct 6, 2008 2:02 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I would be hesitant of the premier player route because of losing the draft picks

even if the draft picks are the ones the Sox are picking up when OrCa leaves.

They’ve got a good start on rebuilding the farm system, now they need to keep it going.

Intriguing

when you first posted his name, it got the gears in my head going, but what’s his story?

I remember the Cubs craved him before the Dodgers picked him up, but then I seem to recall him sucking. Do you think he would transition well to the AL?

he's a step up from cabrera.

but he’s no great shakes. i thought his injury this year would make him affordable but he’s lit things up down the stretch and in the playoffs so far so he may get out of reach.

Sounds like he would be a decent stop-gap for Beckham...assuming Gordon sticks at short

and that Chelexi is staying at 2B. Perhaps insurance that Chelexi could stick at short.

On that note, I’d love to see what KW has on his 3 year board right now in terms of where he expects players to fit in for 2009, 2010, 2011 (other than what I see to be the obvious Thome, Kong, Swish, Dye game of chairs).

I suppose the number of years would be the contractual sticking point for me. Also, he’s only played in the NL, so not sure how he would fare against AL pitchers. Since I constantly hear that the AL is more of a fastball league and the NL is more of a breaking ball league, do you know of any statistics / metrics out there that could be used to evaluate one’s potential performance in the opposite league? I assume that interleague play is too small of sample sizes, but I recognize that it is one place to start.

Not signing OCab is a lot of money in itself.

Not sure what’s going to happen with Javy and Contreras but they could probably free up some more room there.

Well....

that just makes up for the lost revenue from the true doubleheader with the Tigers a few Sundays ago, right? :P

And…$30 is steep but last time I went to a Bears game it was $45 and I think it’s gone up since then.

Another big factor is....

many stadiums here are away from the urban centers and aren’t easy to access without driving. People have to drive to games and there aren’t exactly many other places to drink besides the parking lot.
