oh well
still a successful season overall. sox overcame a lot to get as far as they did, and the playoff win over Minny was one of the most exciting games I’ve ever watched.
Pointless speculation dept: wouldn’t be surprised if JD is shopped in the offseason to try to pick up pitching help, with Swisher back in as the everyday RF.

Well, hell, it was a fun season
I was hoping the Sox would take TB the distance, but I think they lost to a better team.
I have to say, that with Alexei, Q, Swish, Danks, and Floyd the Sox have a lot more young talent than they had last season. I think KW will need a similarly great offseason for the Sox to contend in 2009. But maybe he can pull it off. It should be fun to watch.

well, nice season
No one expected them to make the playoffs, and to make it after losing Quentin is impressive. Some parts came together (Danks, Quentin, Ramirez, Floyd, Thornton) and the offseason is always fun with KW.
With that said, I think it’s fitting to lose to Sonnanstine and that Griffey struck out to end the season.

We really missed Q.
4 hits. No more than 5 runs (once) in 5 games. Not good. But we’re looking better this offseason than last year. We know Danks and Floyd are real. Che is not a ?. Q is a monster (if he’s healthy). The pen has stabilized. And we don’t worry about Crede.
Plus, we have some good talent in the minors. I like it. AL Central Champs. Not shabby for the 72-75 win season I predicted.

A lot of predictions were blown, old man.
Go back and look at our Swisher projections. Laffable. Look at the Q! and Alexei ones as well. The Danks and Floyd ones were way off too.

A good season
Given all the adversity, I am ok with the result. Losing the league MVP, starting 3B, 4th starter, closer for a month, set-up man for two months, an effective Konerko for all but two months of the season, and Swisher’s inconsistent pay – all of that and we still won the division. The Rays just outplayed us – I don’t feel like the Sox beat themselves.
With a good young core of Alexei, Q, Danks, and Floyd, this feels like a season to build on, not a last hurrah of the old guard.
No matter what, I will look fondly back on this season for the most exciting Sox baseball game I’ve ever gone to, the Minny playoff.

No anger or frustration from me tonight
what a fun, fun season. They had two players emerge as cornerstones in Q and Danks and another two emerge as quality pieces in Che and Floyd. The farm system has a nice, nice base with Poreda’s emergence, Brandon Allen’s power and Gordon Beckham’s hair, and we have a couple of draft picks coming once OC departs. I am slightly worried about Danks for next season, but that’s minor in comparison to the personal satisfaction about heading into this winter with a solid core (and the huge difference between the work that needed to be done last winter versus this winter.
The loss to Tampa doesn’t bother me a whole lot. What will stick in my memory is the phenomenal performance by John Danks and that (generally) awesome game to beat the Twins to get to the playoffs. As such, it’ll be nice to come to the ballpark next year (and beyond) and see the 2008 division champs banner.
Kudos, Tampa. Well done, White Sox.
Go Hawks!

Sums up my thoughts as well. Assuaging my thoughts about Danks going forward is what a great job the ORG has done with all its pitchers. Is there any team that gets more 200+ IP guys year in and year out than this one?

My thoughts are pretty much the same as everyone else in this thread...
Great, entertaining, exciting season that nobody could have realistically expected. The one-game playoff was one of the best games I’ve ever watched, and the five walk-off HRs we hit were pretty awesome. Heading into next year, I feel great about Danks, Floyd, and Buehrle leading the rotation with a solid bullpen. The offense will be a concern of mine, but between Che and Q, we could maybe put something together.
I leave this season feeling great about the White Sox. There’s no shame in losing to a damn good Rays team, and Sox fans should hold their heads up high as we head into the offseason.

I know it's kind of been running joke
but truthfully, I would be stunned if he doesn’t sign Orlando Hudson this offseason. My hope is that he doesn’t go too overboard with this speed thing and I have no reason to think he will, especially after they banished Owens this year. Speed is a great commodity to have but having good baserunners like Swish and Q! are just as valuable.

No
but he’s more in the mold of Swish and Q. He can take the extra base and what not. I think he does know the difference between an athlete and a baseball player with speed, but the fact that they were one strained oblique from having Jerry Owens as the starting left fielder does make me a little nervous.

I second the thoughts expressed here in the thread. It was a great season that far exceeded our expectations and one that provided a lot of excitement. I particularly want to thank Cheat and those who run this web site for making following the Sox particularly special this year. I learned a lot reading the recaps and some of the fan posts and the links to other articles. You have all provided a very rich resource for baseball enthusiasts and Sox fans in particular. Let’s go get some added dimension to our offense (a consistent .310-.330 hitter with a little speed would be nice) and take care of that 5th starter spot.

Danks' balls in the news
Last week I wrote about John Danks’ balls. Not the specifics, mind you, but rather celebrating their basic existence. It’s a good thing.
Eight days ago, White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen was lamenting his lack of cojone-endowed pitchers, like Johan Santana and C.C. Sabathia. And hours after he spoke, the Sox won the first of three elimination games in a row to win the AL Central and the team went from the doldrums to the heights of a “no one’s expecting us to win” kind of plucky underdog. Danks was the final ballsy hero, throwing eight shutout innings in a 1-0 win over the Twins last Tuesday. It was his marquee game, the kind that gives you a certain reputation.

last week
On Sunday afternoon, Ozzie Guillen posed an informal question to some reporters hanging around the dugout.
“Did you see (Johan) Santana last night?” he asked. Santana threw a complete game win the night before to keep the Mets in contention for the playoffs. “He has big balls. (C.C.) Sabathia too. I need some pitchers like that.”
