The New York Yankees have acquired center fielder-first baseman Nick Swisher in a trade with the Chicago White Sox, baseball sources tell ESPN.com.

Minor league pitcher Jeff Marquez is headed to Chicago in the deal, the source said. It's uncertain if any other players are involved.

"Up to 5 players could be involved, according to radio reports"

No chance there

He’s their best minor leaguer by far

by Bull Pain on Nov 13, 2008 2:59 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I know, but Swisher is signed at WELL below market value.

And can play multiple positions. And belted lots of HRs in pitcher’s heaven in 2005-2007. AND stays healthy.

This.

Yeah, the conversation, if it wasn't about pitching

has to start with Jackson. And if it’s about pitching, this better not be centered around Betances and Brackman. I don’t know what to think about Kennedy. I don’t like slow throwing righties as a rule.

I hope

Marquez isn’t the best “prospect” in the deal. He’s not in the BA top 10 and it’s a real lousy top 10.

I’m hearing Betemit involved too maybe. He’s not horrible.

Not giving up young 1B/OF who are signed at below market value.

???

I made a fanpost about this but, why trade Swish? He was the leader of the clubhouse, a fan favorite, we just traded half the farm to acquire him last offseason, he’s young, can play multiple positions, and I thought he would’ve been the 1B of the future. He looked so much better than Paulie. I thought they should’ve traded Dye over Swish. Dye is at the tail end of his career and why not trade him now while he could still fetch some good value…a lot more than Swish could bring back I’m sure. Thoughts?

KG in a chat yesterday about Betances:

"Dave (Toronto): Safe to assume one of those pitchers that will be ranked above Brackman is Betances? Was his 2nd half improvement in control for real or can we expect regression in High A?

Kevin Goldstein: It’s safe to assume that yes, but I do have my concerns. Ugly mechanics combined with getting some kind of arm soreness every year is just a bad, bad, bad combination."

That doesn’t sound good. He completely went to town on Brackman too:

“I’m still not a believer. He’ll make the top 11, but there will be other pitchers ahead of him. It’s hard to ignore the ceiling, but at the same time, he’s 23, has never pitched in a pro game other than Hawaii, has a TJ, and has no record of sustained success ANYWHERE, EVER as an amateur. That’s way too many red flags for me. People who have seen him in Hawaii are saying the same stuff they said when he was an NC State. Love the body and the velo, but after that, not much else to love. Not a big fan.”

Marquez + Betemit + ?

“The exact players going back to the White Sox are not yet known, but sources say the White Sox will be receiving two minor leaguers and one major-league reserve. ESPN.com is reporting that Yankees Class AAA right-hander Jeff Marquez is in the deal.”

KG on Ian Kennedy, from "Two Steps Back, AL"

“Desperate for starting pitching, the Yankees were unable to get it from Ian Kennedy, who continued to dominate in the minors, but had an 8.17 ERA in ten big-league games due to command problems that were surprising for a pitcher who depends on nearly perfect location to succeed.”

John Manuel on Marquez

chat earlier in the week. No mention of a Nunez anywhere
Q:
John, is this just normal development with Jeff Marquez or should there be some concern at his struggles in AAA and in the AFL? Will he be in the 11-20 range when my book arrives?
 A:
John Manuel: I wouldn’t say it’s normal development; he’s a sinker-slider guy, and he’s affected by poor defense behind him, but he did not make the development steps that he started to make last year with his curveball and changeup. I was higher on him than most last year and he didn’t quite make me look good this year, did he?

Swish was late-inning only at season’s end and looked bruttal – BRUTAL – at the plate. When I saw him in Tampa he was the most disappointing guy in the lineup. He’s like the Japanese stock market – a long “L” pattern re: performance for the next 10 years.

Marquez start by start in AAA

http://www.howesportsdata.com/howesportsdata/stats/baseball/history/2008/23270.txt

He appears to have been put on the DL after this, thus his starts in the GCL and eventually he was sent to Trenton.

I can stress enough how bad the hitters were in the IL last year. His team was one of maybe 3 or 4 that weren’t filled with crap.

About Nunez:

"
Nunez, 22, came to the Nationals organization from the Dodgers in the 2006 Marlon Anderson trade. He went 4-6, 4.05 last year at low Class A Hagerstown in his steady full-season debut, which he spent almost exclusively as a starter. But Nunez struggled to maintain his velocity late into games and lacked a quality third pitch, so a move to the bullpen seemed inevitable. He advanced to high Class A Potomac to start this year, going 2-8, 5.22 with 82 strikeouts and 21 walks in 81 innings over 21 appearances (17 starts). Nunez has worked out of the bullpen since earning a midseason promotion to Double-A Harrisburg, going 0-0, 1.13 in eight innings. He profiles as a middle reliever down the road, with a lively, sinking fastball that tops out at 94 mph and an improving slider from a low three-quarters arm slot."

3 trades in 2 years or so for Nunez?

Must be a real clubhouse hero to get that treatment.

John Manuel seems to think he has a chance of being a big league reliever. So does Kyle McCullough, though.

Gio

had a rep, but I think it’s unfair to compare his situation to Nunez since he was part of a strange KW web of moves. Nunez has now been in 4 orgs in 2+ years despite barely reaching AA and not being a big prospect. That has to be unusual

Bad Bad trade

and I think KW is a great GM. Even if you don’t like the guy you can’t trade him at his lowest ebb. It would be incredibly unusual for someone that had Swisher’s career to be done at 28 after one bad year. The guy is Much more likely to post an .850 OPS than repeat his performance of last year. Horrible.

I think we ought to call Thome and Konerko the "Cholesterol Brothers" because of the way they clog the bases.

not very much. kenny already said he wasn’t going to be in center in 09, so that meant he was ditching either dye or swisher. one win above replacement is 2.4 mill and Swish was owed 5.3 next year and he projects as a half win above replacement just with the glove in RF.

Not sure of the sturm and drang here.
Swish was late-inning only at season’s end and looked bruttal – BRUTAL – at the plate. When I saw him in Tampa he was the most disappointing guy in the lineup. He’s like the Japanese stock market – a long "L" pattern re: performance for the next 10 years.

by Toonderstrook on Nov 13, 2008 4:06 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Simple explanation

All I can do..
1. KW rarely sells low, maybe Swisher really won’t bounce back.
2. These guys are former top prospects, fits the White Sox bill. Betamit played in the major leagues at 19 for a cup of coffee, and was the Braves top prospect for a while. (The pitchers were highly regarded at one point also, no?). It’s a strategy that seems to pay off well enough.
3. KW once traded for Carlos Quentin.
4. KW once signed Alexei Ramirez for 1 million a year.
5. KW once traded a broken down Freddy Garcia for Gavin Floyd.
6. KW once traded Brandon McCarthy for John Danks.

um, dudes, espn has the scoop on why swish netted so little in return
Not even average

Nick Swisher in 2008 had the worst batting average among players with at least 502 plate appearances, the number needed to qualify for the batting title.

From the bottom up Nick Swisher, White Sox .219
Daric Barton, A’s .226
Michael Bourn, Astros .229
Jack Cust, A’s .231
Mark Ellis, A’s .233
Rickie Weeks, Brewers .234
Kevin Millar, Orioles .234

Well

Betemit is actually a year younger than Swisher. Of course he’s been sig. worse with the bat in his career. But he is a switch-hitter that has hit .814 OPS against righties last 3 years. He’s still young at 28. So I think at the least he’ll platoon with Fields. If he’s an average fielding 3B that’s quite valuable. Given the other crap here it must be about Betemit. Betemit must be one of KW’s guys.

I’m looking for reasons here. Quentin was one of KW’s guys……..

I think we ought to call Thome and Konerko the "Cholesterol Brothers" because of the way they clog the bases.
